Who cares what spouses look like?

Recommended Posts

I'm sick up to here of listening to catty comments from men (mostly) about what Teresa Kerry and Elizabeth Edwards look like. Who gives a flying fuck?

Of course, I've heard from other people in past years about what a cold unimaginative person Laura Bush sounds like; that Barbara Bush was fat and much more wrinkled than her husband; we all know about Hillary; that Nancy Reagan was calculating and stupid and shallow; that Betty Ford was too outspoken; and I'm sure we can go on and on.

But what's the point? Is this some sort of guilt by association thing? Does every one of you dissing someone's spouse only associate with extremely attractive people? If you do, well, then either you're too influenced by physical appearance, or you live on a different planet. Even Hollywood isn't exclusively populated by beautiful people.

Rant over. I'm just sick of this crap. Both candidates provide fodder for poking substantive or semi-substantive fun at them; appearance of their spouse is just SO not on the list.

Yeah, the wife thing seems pretty silly -- UNLESS the wife is trying to be more than simply the First Lady.

I think there could be arguments made against both Nancy and Hillary in that regard, but even so, their physical appearance shouldn't enter into the equation.

Caricatures of either the president or his opponent are just fine. Caricatures of people for DOING things are just fine. Poking fun at Teresa Heinz for saying "shove it" is fine. Poking fun at Laura Bush for being a bit of a cold fish in public is fine. That's what they DO.

It's not what they look like.

Are caricatures of the president okay?

I'd say it depends on how far it goes. Any non-photo-realistic drawing is going to emphasize the physical characteristics of the individual. The question then becomes is it simply being done to identify the individual, maybe make a little bit of fun or just outright being cruel and mean.

http://www.pritchettcartoons.com/bush2.htm I'd consider this to be universally acceptable.

As is this http://www.pritchettcartoons.com/buba.htm.

http://www.monkey-studio.com/bushzoom.html seems pretty benign.

Like it or not (I don't really), men are judged, usually by other men, but also by women, on how attractive their wife/girlfriend/sex partner is.

It's a fact of life. If I get judged by what my wife looks like (and I do), why shouldn't politicians? Do they have some kind of immunity to the societal crap the rest of us have to put up with?

It had nothing to do with her physical appearance, but it did bother me when Saturday Night Live made fun of Betty Ford over her alcohol problems. I never saw the comedy in that. We Americans don't hold our first family in reverence like the Brits hold their queen (although I heard a few QE2 jokes working for a Brit company and they ripped the rest of the royal family). It's tasteless, but it is a fact that we men, especially in a group, make fun of these people and their physical appearance. I also wonder if women do the same thing a little more discrete.

I've got to disagree, I think the first ladies are an absolute non-issue politically or socially speaking. Who cares what they look like or even what they say? They are not going to be the president.

OK, so men all do it.

From this woman's point of view, it makes people who do that sound like shallow, small-minded idiots.

Are you honestly saying you don't watch any male politicians yabbering away and catch yourself thinking 'Man, you are one ugly f*cker!'?

Oh - so they sound like men in general.:o:P:P

Most men in a bar will give props to their buddies - when the lady he is with is attractive. The same just holds over - it's not a political thing - it's primal. Don't fault us cuz we're human. :)

They talk to the President on a daily basis. They are his confidant and, I assume, he will probably respect their opinion. They probably have the position of Most Trusted Adviser, especially on womens issues.

Remember Hillary and the health care issues? She was probably the driving force.

I am not at all concerned with their looks. However, their political viewpoints are certainly important. Theresa Heinz doesn't appear to have much in the way of social skills that are necessary for a political life. Life in the White House is a bulls-eye for mudslingers.

Remember the time that Nixon and Kennedy appeared on tv? There is a popular belief that Nixon lost the womens vote that night.

How about all the women who continue to support Clinton?

There's a lot of shallow stupidity going around, but it's not new or confined to one sex.

There is a joke about something similar.

Husband of 70 years, when asked about his marriage and how it lasted so long.

He said, grinning, "When we were married, we dicided two things; I wasn't going to run Her life, and I wasn't going to run My life. It worked.":P

Influence comes in many ways. The First Lady has the most influence that any man could conceive.
