Zell Miller - where is the media coverage?

Recommended Posts

Last night Zell Miller gave a powerful speech and lambasted the current Democratic party. Where is the media coverage? I have a feeling that had a Republican given a similar speech at the DNC that it would have been on the front page of every newspaper and magazine in the free world and would have been the lead story on every news station. Where is the media now?

> How much of america doers NPR reach?

As many as want to listen. There are very few markets that do not have stations that carry NPR.

>How much does public broadcast television?

Again, as many as want to watch. Action McNews is going to cover the stories that interest the people who want their four minutes of action packed news, and Zell Miller talking isn't going to win out over the latest update on Hurricane Death Watch 04, the latest Iraqi bombing and the man who killed his dog with a sword. People choose what interests them.

Ah, if we only had a state-run media that could put Zell Miller on 24/7 and ban reporting about evil events like the DNC or Farenheight 9/11!

>That certainly wasn't on NPR this morning...

Exactly. They concentrate on the boring stuff - political speeches, what the president of Venezuela is doing, global warming, stuff like that.

>Some wacko actually killed his dog with a sword?

Yep. Quick! Turn on CNN! That's where I saw it. If you had a TiVo you could fast-forward past all the election stuff.

That's funny -
I would rather see something good in this world rather than look at deaths caused by a huuricane.

I do apologize though, I wasn't aware that you spoke for the entire country, or are you just assuming that what interests you is what interests the mojority of america?

Hey Turtle (hopefully you know I actually do like you). If you really need your poltical fix, might I suggest that you spend the $$$ and get cable TV. There is no shortage of political TV on CNN, FOX, CNBC, MSNBC, CBN, PBS, etc, etc, etc. Maybe the big three networks have choosen not to cover the polical scene because they aready know that the rest of the TV channels are saturating the TV waves with this political crap to begin with. Personally I think the programming on the major TV networks has always sucked ass (stupid sitcoms and dumb reality TV shows for people with no reality in their lives). But these major networks are still trying to satisfy all those TV zombies out there who need their sitcoms and reality TV shows without having to bombard them with politics.

Thank god I was playing volleyball last night with friends, then watching taped coverage of the Canada/Slovakia World Cup hockey game (Canada looked good in a 5-1 win) and in the mean time I was packing my BASE rig for the up and coming Labor Day long weekend. I mean TV whether it's sitcoms, reality shows or politcal shows is for zombies. I never thought skydivers/BASE jumpers would be grouped in with the rest of the zombies. But I guess I was mistaken. Turn your TVs off people and get out there and enjoy life. It might actually make you a happier person.

In 28 hours I'll be on the road for a long weekend of BASE jumping with friends. But before then I have another night of volleyball to play, a night of watching a taped World Cup hockey game (USA vs Russia) and some packing to do. I guess I'm going to miss out on GWB's war on terror speech. Oh well, I already know how it goes.

Let the flaming begin ... I don't care ...

?? I listen to NPR because it suits me to do so. Other people watch the Action McNews channels because it suits them to do so. Freedom can be a bitch, eh? Sometimes you can't even force people to watch the 'right' news!

Which do you think was the more important speaker; Zell Miller or Dick Cheney?

While Miller might have been more, um, "interesting" in his rhetoric, Cheney actually, kinda IS running for re-election and IS the Vice-President of the United States. So, anyway, just playing arm-chair news director, I -have- to lead with Cheney and cover Miller as a side-bar.

No - but you can force them to watch the 'Left', obviously.

As an aside - I think Cheney is an intelligent person - but his speeches have all the drama of a lecture on the history of lettuce in the 15th century.

?? No you can't. You can watch right-wing news (FOX) left-wing news (Salon) or news that just reports lots of stuff (CNN.) But this being america, you do get to choose for yourself.

If you cannot afford cable - or satellite and the Maj.Nets decide it is better for you to watch than it is to watch a democrat give props to Bush - what do you think that person can see?

So the market place shouldn't shape the media? Are you saying it should be gov't controlled to insure it is balanced?

I get it, you want corporations to spend billions of dollars a year, broadcasting something you get for free, but you want to dictate what they do broadcast. What happened to capitalism? Do you want socialized news?

You're confusing the hell out of me here turtle....

NPR covered it in spades this morning. I KNOW there is a station that broadcasts NPR in your neck of the woods. Plus, I've never found anywhere that you couldn't find an NPR station.

sooooo...
Are you mad because we didn't make you listen to NPR??????

You could have listened to the speeches live on the radio. NPR carried it, more than a couple of local AM stations carried it. Who didn't was the local "right-wing" rah-rah station (540AM in the bay area). They never carry such, they just go off on some half-truth, screen callers so as to never get any disagreement.

Christ. I think the convention was on all major networks last night. Prime time tv and I get stuck choosing between which network was showing the convention. Media coverage? Freaking hours of it.

Good thing "engineering disasters" was on the History channel..

I am simply amazed how you can see a persons facial expressions over the radio.

My point here is that the major - ok - one more time - MAJOR Networks decided that it was better for the American public to not witness a speech by a democrat backing the republican candidate and incumbant.

This is my opinion why: As ascenine as it seems, people believe more of what they see on TV than what, even they witness with their own eyes. The public, as a whole, will believe what is given to them to watch.

I find it hard to believe any sensible person would not see the political motivation behind this action.
