smiles 0 #101 October 1, 2004 Quotethe mayor of Nelson and some other Canadians are planning to honor the draft dodgers with a two-day festival and a larger-than-life monument depicting a Canadian helping two scared American men. The mayor and some other Canadians?? Give me a break- talk about deluxe soap opera. SMiles The leader of a British Columbia group Isaac Romano called Our Way Home, had been planning to erect the monument in Nelson, B.C., during a July 2006 two-day festival in honour of U.S. conscientious objectors. On Monday night, Blair Suffredine, Liberal member for the provincial riding of Nelson, and Jim Gouk, Tory MP for federal B.C. riding of Southern Interior, both said they opposed the monument, calling it inappropriate and offensive to many Americans. In a statement issued on Tuesday, Romano said the group plans to go ahead with the statue, but may have to find another place to put it.
gemini 0 #102 October 1, 2004 The average age of the GI in Vietnam was 19 and they were forced to make very difficult decisions sometimes. But your point is not valid because almost all the draft dodgers were were at least 22 because they stayed in college under the student deferment and only received their draft notices after they graduated. One more time...these guys were afraid and they ran and hid to leave the rest of us to fill the draft quotas. Blue skies, Jim
gemini 0 #103 October 1, 2004 Quote...two-day festival in honour of U.S. conscientious objectors. These guys were not conscientious objectors they were draft dodgers and felons. A conscientious objector was a person who once drafted petitioned the draft board as a conscientious objector. Some served honorably in the military as medics, some were given alternative service, some served with the chaplains service, some petitions were denied, some served jail time...but they were all willing to stand and defend the postion. They did not run and hide. Blue skies, Jim
