Was Bush wired???

Quote

ct. 8, 2004 | Was President Bush literally channeling Karl Rove in his first debate with John Kerry? That's the latest rumor flooding the Internet, unleashed last week in the wake of an image caught by a television camera during the Miami debate. The image shows a large solid object between Bush's shoulder blades as he leans over the lectern and faces moderator Jim Lehrer.

The president is not known to wear a back brace, and it's safe to say he wasn't packing. So was the bulge under his well-tailored jacket a hidden receiver, picking up transmissions from someone offstage feeding the president answers through a hidden earpiece? Did the device explain why the normally ramrod-straight president seemed hunched over during much of the debate?

As we've spoken about this before . . .

It's technologically possible to have a receiver so small and descreet that it can fit inside the ear and nobody would notice it.

With this in mind (and with years of experience in dealing with IFB receivers for the television industry) it seems highly unlikely to me that GWB would have and use such clumsy technology that it would be noticed by anyone. Further, it would be stupid to put it on his back when even the bulkiest technology I know of is about the size of a deck of cards and is usually worn in a belt clip.

I can't imagine what the thing on GWB's back might be, but it's almost assuredly NOT an IFB receiver.

> Was Bush wired???

This is bizarre. The first ten times I heard this I thought "another wacko democratic conspiracy theory." But:

-He tried hard to prevent unusual camera angles, but news agencies put cameras where they wanted to anyway. One of them caught the picture I attached. Of course his handlers would have to be really dumb to use such a visible system, but it's still odd.

-He has used such a system before. On one interview carried by CNN, a wireless microphone receiver picked up the person cueing him. Since then the RNC has been careful to determine what frequency camera crews use for their wireless microphones. (And I'd emphasize there's nothing wrong with using such a system; it's like a teleprompter.)

-It would explain his odd behavior during some Q+A sessions, his stalling for time at the beginning of questions and his outburst during the debate. Of course he's never been a great public speaker and this could just be his 'style.'

I'm still not sure I believe that he was just repeating what people were telling him to say, and I have no doubt that all traces of such a system will be removed by tonight's debate. But it's still odd.

Is it possible that it's the closing flap of his Kevlar?

Interesting theory... Does anyone know if they make Kevlar vests with the flaps in the back as opposed to the sides or top?

He would have to have had some type of earpiece. I believe this story as much as the one about Kerry having a hidden reciever in his pen.

I hope no-one's suggesting that he's dumb enough to put his Kevlar vest on back-to-front!?:S:ph34r:

They're usually in the front ? Wouldn't the other side be stronger - I'd expect the SS to be more concerned about a shot to the front side.

It's an odd shape- is the source for the image reliable?

This "earpiece" nonesense was making me crazy, so I contacted a friend who is on the job with the Secret Service.

The pure and simple answer to this ludicrous accusation is that this device is nothing more than a location-transponder and panic button with which the President may notify the Secret Service of an emergency and vice versa.

Should this be wrong, I promise on my word of honor to eat all my hats. All of them. Even the one made of leather soaked in mad cow juice.

Would you mind pointing out where I suggested that the flaps were in the FRONT?

I would imagine that the POTUS could probably have something custom made so as to be as unobtrusive as possible. Looking good from the front is a bit more important than looking good from the back (unless you're a couple of certain female skydivers I know). ;)

My guess would be some type of body armor. Most under the shirt vests close with velcro on front. The pres. probally has some sort of additional panel(s) or trauma plating in the back also.
