Nobel peace laureate says AIDS deliberately created

Nobel peace laureate claims HIV deliberately created
Kenyan ecologist Wangari Maathai, the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, today reiterated her claim that the AIDS virus was a deliberately created biological agent.

"Some say that AIDS came from the monkeys, and I doubt that because we have been living with monkeys (since) time immemorial, others say it was a curse from God, but I say it cannot be that.

"Us black people are dying more than any other people in this planet," Ms Maathai told a press conference in Nairobi a day after winning the prize for her work in human rights and reversing deforestation across Africa.

"It's true that there are some people who create agents to wipe out other people. If there were no such people, we could have not have invaded Iraq," she said.

"We invaded Iraq because we believed that Saddam Hussein had made, or was in the process of creating agents of biological warfare," said Ms Maathai.

"In fact it (the HIV virus) is created by a scientist for biological warfare," she added.

"Why has there been so much secrecy about AIDS? When you ask where did the virus come from, it raises a lot of flags. That makes me suspicious," Ms Maathai said.

Africa accounts for 25 million out of the estimated 38 million across the world infected with HIV, and the vast majority of infected Africans are women, according to UNAIDS estimates.

The United States on Friday congratulated Ms Maathai on winning the Nobel Peace Prize, but tempered its praise over her claims about AIDS.

"She said (HIV/AIDS) was invented as a bio-weapon in some laboratory in the West," a senior State Department official said.

"We don't agree with that."

The official pointed to a report of those comments published in August in Kenya's daily Standard newspaper, in which Ms Maathai was quoted as saying that HIV/AIDS was created by scientists for the purpose of mass extermination.
*************************************************

Must be true since the claim comes from a Nobel peace laureate.

Let's see. "Western" culture has produced:

crucifixion
the rack
hanging, drawing and quartering
the guillotine
deliberate use of smallpox to eliminate indigenous peoples
phosgene
mustard gas
zyklon B
tabun
sarin
VX
atomic weapons
cluster bombs
ANFO

I can't think of a single technology that hasn't been turned to killing or assisting in killing at some point in time. In fact, throughout history one of the first uses of any new technology was to come up with better or more ingenious ways of killing people.

And our latest technology is genetic engineering.

I don't think Ms. Maathai is correct, but...

To think that genetic engineering won't be used at some point for killing is naive. And *maybe* it already has been used.

It's just a matter of time.

Just because she won a prize for planting a bunch of trees, doesn't mean she knows what she's talking about when it comes to medical topics.

As a scientist I hate to see when another scientist makes a statement like that. Where is the evidence?
Without some strong evidence this is all horse shit.

Who thought that genetic engineering won't be used?

The important thing is not what "Western culture has produced". It is the fact that she said an outrageous thing that liberals seemingly want to be true.
People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am

When Arafat won the Nobel peae prize, that was the signal that it had no meaning.

What evidence is there that liberals want it to be true? Conspiracy theorists want it to be true, and there are conspiracy theorists on both sides.

Nature always finds a way to eliminate or reduce a species that upsets the balance of the planet's ecosystem. AIDS is just one of nature's many weapons against overpopulation whether it be man-made or not. If the human population keeps growing at the present rate, we will eventually destroy ourselves.

A few liberals would think this is true, or even suggest it might be true.

Zero conservatives would give this rubbish a second thought.

Actually, she sounds rather like an idiot, to me.

According to things I've read -- like how in some parts of Africa, it is believed that a man having sex with a virgin will rid him of the HIV infection -- it's no fucking wonder "us black people are dying" at such a rate from AIDS. IGNORANCE drive that death rate -- nothing more.

We are talking about a place where they wouldn't accept vaccines (what was that for, malaria or something) because they had come to suspect that the vaccine was a ruse to infect the population instead of protect it.

If people were not so afraid of being politically incorrect and just walking right the fuck up to a backwards culture and TELLING it: "Look you are causing your own fucking problems with superstition, willful ignorance and bullshit shamanism instead of actual learning," then maybe some progress at saving lives over there could be made. No one wants to insult a culture these days, even if that culture is so butt-fucked backward that it is causing its own problems that could easily be resolved with education.

Exactly. Now who in the scientific or political communities will stand up and say bitch, unless you have some proof instead of some nipshit conspiracy theory, shut the fuck up 'cause you sound like an idiot?

A Nobel prize is no excuse to just spout off at the mouth with any ol' idiotic rant, unproven and unsubstantiated. I mean, does her Nobel prize have anything to do with AIDS research? It'd be like someone winning an Academy Award for a documentary film and then running off at the mouth with some drivel about the presidential race or something. Where's the connection? Where's the relevance?

She's obviously not making a scientific statement, so it doesn't bother me based on that. She is just as qualified as any of us to speak her mind on social issues. What strikes me, though, is that distrust must run pretty deep for such an accomplished person to make such a seemingly ignorant statement. That kind of distrust doesn't usually develop without any basis in reality.

On the other hand a few conservatives probably wish it was true.

This price was not given to her just for planting some trees! What a blind point of view. >:( Why don't I feel surprised? [:/]

She arranged more than 200k trees to be planted. For that part of the world plus giving additional information about keeping their own environment means a lot. What she's doing is hard as a rock.

Travelling around the poorest African states trying to inform about f.e. AIDS danger has to be honored much more than counting serial numbers on bullets..>:(

It's scaring me to learn how low the information standard seems to be in certain parts of the remaining world.

Actually, she was given the prize for more than that. It was for putting forth an effort to conserve resources which the shortage of is the primary cause of war. By conserving needed resources, less war will take place.

Even so, it doesn't make her qualified to speak about the origin of AIDS. Hell, they had a president over there in Africa telling people that you couldn't get AIDS from having sex, that condoms were evil, and that small pox vaccines would give you AIDS.
