It's like being in a ship headed directly for an iceberg and having two captains who disagree on the way the ship should be directed. The crew votes on which captain should navigate. However, a few others don't like either captain and decide to vote on yet another captain (who is probably a better choice); however he/she will not be able to get to the ship before it crashes. You are still wasting your vote in this case. Unfortunately, Idealists never win in the end.

Your analogy is not comparative to the US Government - you're leaving out Congress, which IMO has much more power than who sits in the Oval Office. Thusly the American people hold much more clout than the crew of your ship.

I disagree, I believe the congress holds ALOT more clout than the american people (and in my analogy IS the crew). But, regardless, you know how I feel and I know how you feel.

no presidential candidate has the ability to become a dictator... because no matter what they might try they WILL ONLY be president for 8 years.

edited to add that the people who voted for alternated canidates have in one way or another made a choice just as the person that choses not to vote (for what ever reason.)

I voted for Badnarik. My vote was not wasted. Kerry was predicted to win California, and did. That is why I chose to vote for what I believe in, rather than just vote to remove Bush.

If no one ever votes for any candidate outside of the two parties, how will the system ever change?

I voted for Badnarik and ran for office on the Libertarian ticket. Neither one of us won, but we both got to make some good points, and a few more people will consider our approach next time.

The Socialists in the early 20th century never got a ton of votes, but they got enough that the Democrats eventually adopted every one of their major positions and passed them into law. If the same thing happens with libertarian ideas in the 21st century, I'll be happy.

I think jumping out of airplanes should be prerequisite to holding office.
