He's still wearing the padded bras 'cos he can't get hormone therapy on socialised medicine. He's also complaining about the ludicrous price of size 11 stillettos. Mind you, he did get a nice long blonde wig last week. Oh... Sorry... Thought you were talking about Nige the Politician. Whoops! Mike. peacefuljeffrey 0 #38 November 16, 2004 Quote"That's because before I was a proofreader." I would have thought a proofreader would have known when to give a country its correct tiitle, eg with a capital B in Britain. I do that as a snub. I guess it worked! "and it is not like they just asked Nigel Hetwoodham of 83 Brookhill Road for his thoughts on the matter -- the guy is a government higher-up." QuoteSo who solicited this statement from George, and in what context was the satement made? And why can't we verify its authenticity? If you wanted to, you could verify it. The article appeared on page 11A of the Sun-Sentinel (Ft. Lauderdale, FL, USA) on 22 April 1999. It was written by Sue Leeman of the Associated Press. Beyond that I can't help you. But are you really ready to claim that because we don't have a transcript of the interview (which would prove nothing, anyway) the AP article is not to be credited as true and accurate? I assume that the statement was made during an interview with someone from the press, over the radio. Or maybe it was at a press conference, a recording of which was later played over the radio. Did you see where the article said, "Robertson told British Broadcasting Corp. radio"? -Jeffrey-Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!" nacmacfeegle 0 #41 November 16, 2004 "I do that as a snub. I guess it worked!" Yeah, my bad, the rules say don't feed the trolls. "If you wanted to, you could verify it." Well y'see, many people take statements like this out of context. Its become something of a tradition here that if you are goingto post something even remotely controversial, you give details of the source, or some other supporting information. What you gave us was an incomplete sentence from an obscure quote from 5 years ago. Thats open to misinterpretation. The fine documentary journalist, the internationally respected, and award winning Mr Moore does this all the time, its one of his very few flaws. You don't have a scan of the article that we could see in its entirety do you? I'm guessing George voiced his wish in response to the sad Colombine incident, where a couple of gun nuts went out and killed some kids for shits and giggles, but you probably know more about that than I. What he didn't obviously do was go on air, on an american network, and publicly incite american gun freaks to give them up. I'm guessing he said it on a radio programme that was intended for broadcast in Britain. In which case, your entire argument here is kind of pointless. No change there then.-------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. Quote"If you wanted to, you could verify it." Well y'see, many people take statements like this out of context. Its become something of a tradition here that if you are goingto post something even remotely controversial, you give details of the source, or some other supporting information. I gave you everything I had, right at the outset: the publication date, the publication, the headline... I think I forgot the name of the reporter, but I'd have to look back. That doesn't satisfy your requirements? What more could I put up? How is retyping the exact article in full less satisfactory than if I had pointed you to the exact same thing posted on a web site? Here: I've done some of the work for you. Here is an online article -- on the BBC site -- in which the same quote appears that appeared in the article I transcribed. Satisfied? QuoteYou don't have a scan of the article that we could see in its entirety do you? What difference would a scan make? I told you I typed the article verbatim as it appears in my clipping from the Sun-Sentinel. What this request tells me is that you simply think I am LYING, or FABRICATING either the article, the quote, or both. If you really think so lowly of me, why would you enjoin me in a discussion of this in the first place? You obviously don't give me credit for being honest and truthful. QuoteWhat he didn't obviously do was go on air, on an american network, and publicly incite american gun freaks to give them up. You have to resort to the use of insulting terms, huh? QuoteI'm guessing he said it on a radio programme that was intended for broadcast in Britain. In which case, your entire argument here is kind of pointless. No change there then. I'll disregard the personal attack on the alleged commonness of my arguments being "pointless" and point out that his comments, no matter where they appeared, go toward proving what brits here have been denying: that they feel that british gun control should be implemented in the U.S. I never said that the criteria was that they would have to have donated money or work to an organization seeking to make that a reality, only that they believed that way. They clearly do. -Jeffrey-Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!"

You've suggested, on many occasions, that our society would benefit from the allowance of personal gun ownership. I've/we've disagreed. Personally, I see it as a no-brainer...gun-owning society=lots of gun deaths...non gun-owning society=very few gun deaths. For that reason, I say that your suggestion (that WE change) is ridiculous. You don't answer that point, because it doesn't suit you. To my mind, it's by far the most important fact in all of this, and makes everything else mere detail. As for your laws...how could they possibly be changed effectively? Who'd collect the, what, 80 million, or was it 800 million guns? I can't believe I keep getting drawn into this. I simply don't understand how you've twisted the argument around to make out that WE'RE threatening your 'freedoms'. I simply look at the situation in your country and think 'bugger that'. You, presumably, look towards our rainy island and grip your tool more firmly (ooh, missus) in case we try to take it away. We won't, we can't and we're not particularly interested in doing so. Now, on a personal level, I'd like to see someone take your gun away just for a laugh, but that's just me.
nacmacfeegle 0 #46 November 16, 2004 "You calling me a troll?" Not if you are going to whine personal attack...again. It all depends on the purpose of the 'snub', why would you 'snub' an entire nation anyways? "What this request tells me is that you simply think I am LYING, or FABRICATING either the article, the quote, or both." Not in this particular instance, I was merely asking for more information on your source. It appears you may have posted the entire article, which does, correct me if I'm wrong, I'm no proof reader, contain incomplete sentences. "Here is an online article -- on the BBC site -- in which the same quote appears that appeared in the article I transcribed. Satisfied? " Much better, you're really starting to get the hang of this. "I'll disregard the personal attack on the alleged commonness of my arguments being "pointless" I really don't see a personal attack there, if I've upset you sensitive feelings, please take my apologies. Okay we digress....again. "his comments, no matter where they appeared, go toward proving what brits here have been denying: that they feel that british gun control should be implemented in the U.S." No they don't, and seeing the statement in context convinces me of this even more. I don't see anyone from the much more detailed link 'pushing' gun control on anyone. What I feel, and what I 'push' or try to shove down your throat, are two entirely different things, can't you see that? I see people from Dunblane sympathising with the people of Littleton (Colombine?), offering help and support to fellow parents, teachers, victims, social leaders etc in the aftermath of what can only described as an apalling incident. Most of the people in the much more detailed link will have experienced a similar situation to the people of Littleton. All they are doing is reaching and saying 'hey we understand what you are going through, maybe we can help, we've been there ourselves'. I don't see people swearing, losing the rag, and shouting at americans to give up their guns. But you and I see things differently, don't we?-------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. The 'Brits' here individually deny suggesting that they impose their views on the US... But you think because one British citizen 'hopes' you'll change your policy that you can "prove"?! that secretly all Brits do! Just stop with the generalisations maybe?
