England to ban public smoking

You're an attorney, use your reasonable inferences here. The ban is not about "protecting people at the workplace." If it was about that, they would not be exempting workplaces from it.

Exactly - my question was rhetorical and you've hit the real answer on the head. Not that I'd complain about the format of the legislation, I think the results ought to be just about perfect... assuming it works right. There are a couple of outstanding questions I have about the precise interpretation to be given to certain terms however.

In Scotland it is a total ban in enclosed pubs, and other licensed premises.

Bhutan (small Himalayan state) might be leading the world here, they have banned all tobacco sales.

I'm also a smoker, and I do enjoy a cigarette with my drink & pub meal, and restaurant meal if it comes to that.

I also enjoyed being able to smoke on aircraft (especially the long haul ones).

But... I had to learn to live with not smoking on aircraft and there are always ways around that (nicotine patches, those "nicopen" things you can suck on, etc...)... And of course the obligatory dash to the nearest airport exit with ciggie in one hand and lighter in the other. That's easy, you just follow the trail of freshly discarded "Nico-Patches".:D

Anyway, while I'm not particularly keen on the blanket smoking ban (why not license "smoking" pubs and offer a choice?), when it comes into force I'll learn to live with it. Personally I don't see it as overly important and I'm not going to stop eating out and drinking out just 'cos I can't smoke. Anyone who IS going to change their habits because of the smoking ban needs help!

I hope they enjoy the black market they are sure to be inviting. :S

Now, what happened in Suffolk county on Long Island, NY was different.

First, they required that any food establishment that wanted to keep smoking areas had to fully enclose them and have a separate ventilation system. I was working for TGIFridays when they passed this law, and the company had to build a big partition and stuff.

Then I moved away, and my dad tells me that in the time between, they gave a big Fuck You to all the companies that laid out the expense to comply with that first ban, and now, separate area and ventilation or not, there's no smoking period. Nice, huh? A chain like TGIFridays spends hundreds of thousands of dollars to comply in good faith, and they get the shaft anyway after they do so.

Here in Norway all smoking indoors became illegal from 1st june 2004.
A lot of people expected a lot of pubs, resturants, bars and nightclubs would go bancrupt.
Guess what, sales have gone up. More people are going out, and they are buying more booze and beer. More people are comming to resturants to eat.
The violent uprises and illegal pubs have not arised either. After the ban came in place, a majority of smokers now support the ban.

There are only 10 types of people in the world. Those who understand binary, and those who don't.

how can you smoke & eat at the same time? doesn't it spoil the flavor of the food?:S or do you mean you smoke AFTER the meal? just wondering.

(The one thing I couldn't stomach was a steak-and-kidney pie I had at the school's refectory one day. It actually smelled and tasted of urine.)

As one of those evil smokers, I sort of understand the concern, but if they're so concerned over the harmful effects to the environment and/or themselves, why don't they stop using their car? stop heating their house? etc, etc, etc. The natural air around where I live is much more harrmful than what I'm exhaling.

Some of us do just that (or to be specific, heat with solar.)

>The natural air around where I live is much more harrmful than what I'm exhaling.

Generally not true, unless you live in a smokestack (or in Donora, PA in the 1940's.)

I live in a town that is completely surrounded by oil factories. Not surrounded like there are some on the perimeter a couple miles away. As in most of the square footage of this town is factories with a few houses. Sometimes I walk outside and it smells like it's raining gasoline and it's not raining!

Its probably because that when 'they' ie someone else stops using their car... they still have to encounter your smoke :P

Basically your right to a certain extent - maybe banning cars is next :D

I would probably support a limit on car engine sizes / exhaust too though - think mankind could survive with 1.0 litre engines rather than 5.0! But, as I have passed my boy racer phase of life I would say that ;)

I think that everyone should have a choice. Airports for example, should have smoking room. Hell, if I had a pub, I would have a separate smoking room. If people want to smoke, they go in there, if not, stay out. Why should smokers be discriminated against when there are obvious solutions for keeping everyone happy and in a healthy environment.

You choose whether you smoke or not. The thing that bugs me is people who want to give up blame everyone else, ie other smokers, smoky bars/restuarants, etc.

If you want to give up, give up. It is all about will power. No excuses.

Banning cars - too much money in oil to ban them, but I do see Red Ken calling for the banishment of Chelsea Tractors in London, through higher taxation.

I agree whole heartedly... everyone should be allowed to choose....

The pub issue is that this also includes workers. People shouldnt have to work in a smoky environment.. but a seperate room just for smoking would work (although thats alot of rooms to make!)

The UK ban is not based on workers rights though - as otherwise all work environments would be covered.
