Zep 0 #1 November 24, 2004 This morning over coffé I was having an argument over what a PARABELLUM is (Context fire arm ie:9mm parabellum) I said it was the Borchart and Luger pistol and my friend says it's the type of cartridge So who's right? Gone fishing
Kennedy 0 #2 November 24, 2004 You're both right. The name comes from the latin "Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum" It is both the model of firearms and the name of a cartridge. The "9mm" is called by many names, including 9mm Luger, 9mm Parabellum, and 9x19. Luger was the maker, Parabellum was a string of firearms, and the cartridge was named for the maker, the gun, and its size. No one name is more correct than another. It just never was set it stone like the .45 ACP was. (funny, since it is not only for automatics, is not only for colts, and is not only for pistols) witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
PhillyKev 0 #3 November 24, 2004 Parabellum is the generic term for 9mm Luger, a/k/a 9x19mm. Parabellum is to Luger what tissue is to kleenex.
jdhill 0 #4 November 24, 2004 The Parabellum name comes from ancient Latin saying Si vis Pacem, Para bellum - if you want Peace, prepare for War. It was then name of the pistol of the Luger type, and then it stuck to the ammo... when you go buy a box of 9mm the box usually says 9mm Luger or 9mm Parabellum. peacefuljeffrey 0 #6 November 24, 2004 Yeah, Parabellum simply means, "For War." Think of the "ante-bellum South" -- that was the South before the Civil War. "Ante" = before; "Bellum" = war. -Jeffrey-Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!"

JohnRich 4 #23 November 25, 2004 QuoteIf you "mike" a 9mm, its decimal equivalent is .380,which some refer to as 9mm short... Well, that refers to the bullet diameter only. As the attached photo shows, with a .380 on the left, and a 9 mm on the right, there are large differences between the two cartridges. The 9 mm has a heavier bullet, larger case, more powder and higher velocity. The whole caliber thing is weird anyway. The names usually don't actually represent the true diameter. For example, .308 is actually .311, and 8 mm is actually 7.92. Go figure!
AggieDave 6 #24 November 25, 2004 44 vs 45? Has to do with the powder load, case size and then of course the resulting muzzle velocity.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
