For a job with no requirement for a degree for an entry level position, and with failry liberal hiring standards, (tempered with a fairly conservative training process), the military pays pretty well, compared to civilian jobs involving unskilled labor. I am not saying that our servicemen are unskilled (or all men), by the vast majority of "junior enlistment folks" got their job training after they joined, and it was paid for by Uncle Sam, so I believe it is a fair comparison. While some benefits are a joke, others are valuable, like food, quarters, medical.
