Why the fuck does Shaquille O'neal make hundreds of millions of dollars and my buddy that is getting deployed to Iraq to get shot at is only getting paid $24,000? And he has to pay $12 a day to eat in the mess hall.

B/C America has a fucked idea of importance.

Our soldiers, sailors and Marines are my heros. They're more important then any of the pro sports players.

I've got a lot of friends/family (Aggie Family) over in the "sand box" right now and every night I pray for them.

Please don't feel too bad for Shaq. Not everyone gets to be a soldier.
Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.

Well. If all of our service men and women were paid that much, we would have never gone to war in the first place.

How do you figure that? They're soldiers doing their jobs, not pirates after booty....

Probably because the entire armed forces would consist of 9 people. :P

Sorry but I dont thinks that's what they are saying .. the point is that if members of the armed forces actually cost the same as many sports 'personalities' - no country could afford a standing army - NOT that the members of the forces are pirates or money grabbers - No One is saying that at all..

Maybe the DoD should start selling tv rights to their adventures.......

CNN and Fox could get into a bidding war on who gets to put their spin on it.....

Stop watching NBA or any pro-sports for that matter and these overgrown, steroid pumping thugs won't get paid as much.

Slow down. I just meant that we could not afford the war or even an Armed Force if everyone was getting paid that much.

Both my mother and father served. My brother was a lifer in the Marine Corp, and my nephew just got back from Iraq on a medical discharge for the SECOND time.

I have never heard anyone in my family complain about the servcie pay. And yes it does suck. But with a voluntary army, I think the guys and gals doing the job are there for reasons other than money....

....must be the benfits! ;)

At least Shaq is reasonably good at what he does.

My chief gripe is with CEOs of companies who pay themselves $millions while running the company into the ground and/or sending all its jobs overseas, and who whine that their taxes are too high.

Agreed re: CEO's, but you ought to realize that many junior enlisted folks have to go on foodstamps because the Defense Dept pays them so poorly...

A cushy tenured professorship is quite the ivory tower to shit on military folk (who have no choice which wars they fight) from...

Its the same over here.

During the Firemans strike we had guys returning from Iraq, deploying on firefighting duty, then returning to Iraqu on another 6 month tour.

To top it all the soldiers fighting fires were getting paid less than the striking firemen.

Sometimes life as a squaddie sucks, but we cant do anything about that as we are not allowed to strike unlike firemen.

For a job with no requirement for a degree for an entry level position, and with failry liberal hiring standards, (tempered with a fairly conservative training process), the military pays pretty well, compared to civilian jobs involving unskilled labor. I am not saying that our servicemen are unskilled (or all men), by the vast majority of "junior enlistment folks" got their job training after they joined, and it was paid for by Uncle Sam, so I believe it is a fair comparison. While some benefits are a joke, others are valuable, like food, quarters, medical.

(breathe)

Having said that, it is very difficult to put a price on the time of someone who is willing to risk life or limb for their country. (I would hazard to guess that their combat motivation is their immediate brothers in arms, and their loved ones back home, before thought of country comes to mind, at least under fire.) The current situation is not helped by this administration's lack of reasonable justification for the war in Iraq, and seems to mitigate the fact that civilians know what they are getting into before they sign the proverbial dotted line to become a member of our armed forces, and combat is part of the game they play.

BTW, I think the Prof was comparing Shaq to the CEOs, and not soldiers in his brief job skills analysis, in the context of similar salaries. As in it would be a more effective argument to compare the pittance the soldiers are earning for their job well done, at least as far as their orders are concerned, and the poor job that many CEOs do for $everal million annually. I don't think he meant anything unfavorable by it, although it might have been a cheap shout at some incompetent CEOs. :o

Ding ding ding, we have a winner. Most of us should realize that advertising is where the real money comes from. Stop buyin' all the products that they're sellin' ya... And maybe those who played games for a living wouldn't get paid more than those that do more, shall we say, productive jobs. Though economists would argue that by continuing the cycle thos athletes may be worth just what they are paid. Hey, I wanna be a sponsored swooper, can you blame me? And though Dekker's right, I don't think advertised, televised, and glorified wars are the answers... Can you imagine Nike sponsoring an infantry-man? "Check out his stats folks, 36 kills in the past months, 4 bombs disarmed and only 5 of his unit lost in action this year! Stayed tuned for tonite's exiting siege of Fallujah, only on FOX!"

I'm not dumping on the military - my son is in the US Army. I'm saying that in a comparison between many CEOs and Shaq, I'd take Shaq. At least he doesn't ship US jobs overseas while feathering his own nest.
