newsstand 0 #27 December 25, 2004 Because people pay money to see Shaq in action. If people stopped going to sporting events the players would stop getting the big checks. "Truth is tough. FlailingJohn 0 #28 December 25, 2004 um I think shaq is a bad example for the point you are trying to make. Wasn't, He an army brat growing up? Shaq's father served in the army and shaq grew up in san antonio, tx while his father was stationed at fort sam houston. Btw i do agree no soldier should have to pay for food while in a hostile enviorment. ( I could understand if they where in a stateside non-combat envoirment. ) They have other things to worry about than paying 12.00 a day at the mess hall johnI threw my confidence out the airplane door years ago......... kelpdiver 2 #31 December 25, 2004 QuoteWhy the fuck does Shaquille O'neal make hundreds of millions of dollars and my buddy that is getting deployed to Iraq to get shot at is only getting paid $24,000? And he has to pay $12 a day to eat in the mess hall. The Miami Heat will likely sell over a million tickets this year, plus get a big chunk of money from media sources that televise the game. All to watch 12 players and some coaches put on a product. As one of the best players in the league, and largely responsible for their current 10 game winning streak, he's going to get a lot of that money. It's the American Dream, no? (I'd direct that rage at Kobe, myself.)

GQ_jumper 4 #33 December 25, 2004 Quotetell me that's not true. do solders have to pay for their meals in mess halls? not in iraq. but stateside it depends on your housing status, normally if you live in the barracks you have a meal card and can eat at any chow hall without paying. if you have your own place you get an allowance for food, and would have to pay if you went to the chow hall. the allowance is exactly the same as you would pay for three meals a day in the chow hall every day. but unfortunately this amount is much less than you pay on the local economy for meals, so if you eat out a lot you end up paying out of pocket.History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid. --Dwight D. DJL 235 #34 December 25, 2004 Shaquille O'Neil does a very important thing for our planet, he bounces a ball on a wooden floor and tries to toss it through a basket. As for military pay, the base pay should never increase. The pay increase should be in the form of higher pensions and benefits. It's important to the command structure and military lifestyle to have soldiers live harder lives. Let's say the pay-scales were reversed, how tough would that SGT be who drives home in his Lexus and unwinds with a glass of Crystal in his jacuzzi wit some fly bitches... If you want to do something about this then donate to VFW or the Armed Forces Retirement Home. Many soldiers already do this by a voluntary deduction from their pay. Use the money you would have otherwise spent on basketball tickets and a pair of Reebok."I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
Gawain 0 #35 December 25, 2004 QuoteQuoteQuote At least Shaq is reasonably good at what he does. My chief gripe is with CEOs of companies who pay themselves $millions while running the company into the ground and/or sending all its jobs overseas, and who whine that their taxes are too high. Agreed re: CEO's, but you ought to realize that many junior enlisted folks have to go on foodstamps because the Defense Dept pays them so poorly... A cushy tenured professorship is quite the ivory tower to shit on military folk (who have no choice which wars they fight) from... I'm not dumping on the military - my son is in the US Army. I'm saying that in a comparison between many CEOs and Shaq, I'd take Shaq. At least he doesn't ship US jobs overseas while feathering his own nest. If you want to believe that, fine. But from all the endorsements he does for companies that are squarely in the crosshairs of watch groups claiming to ship jobs overseas...Nike, Addidas, Champion, et al... He may not make them, but his endorsements sell them, helping, and vindicating that company with its own shareholders. I support the business practice on many levels, not 100%, but our market is better equiped to adapt than any other. So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! The big beef is the sweatshops they run. But the point is well taken. That said, who here is so principled that they would decline 10 or 20 million dollars a year from Nike? Hazarrd 1 #37 December 26, 2004 Quotefree market society...... supply and demand. if you really want to know the real answer to that question... in economics its called the "superstar phenomenon." this basically says that in some jobs there are a few people who have the exceptional ability to perform better than others. they have an exceptional stage presence. with technology these "superstars" can be shown all around the world (tv, radio, whatever). a good example is a that a not very well known comedian can entertain a small nightclub, whereas Jay Leno can entertain the entire country because of NBC. there are no superstars in the army. you get shot, yoru dead. you get replaced. 1 man cant take out a whole army. .-.
