Alleyoop 0 #1 July 8, 2016 Hello! I'm considering to buy a brand new rig. I have the Javelin Odyssey on top of my list, but would like to do some more research before potentially doing so. First of all, my experience and weight points towards the J3K, since the J1KS and a 150 sq ft canopy is too big of a step forward at the moment. I would very much appriciate if some of you, who owns a J3k, could post some pictures of your self with your rig on. I'm just a bit worried that the J3K might be too big size wise for me. I haven't been able to find one at my local drop zones, so I could see it myself. The closest was a J4K, which was quite large I have to say. Google haven't been of much help either. If it's too big, I might just wait some time, until I'm ready for a 150 sq ft canopy and the J1KS. Secondly, I would love to see what kind of design you went with, just for pure inspiration! So pictures of that, would also be awesome! (Even if it isn't a J3K) So yeah, I would love it if you could post some pictures of your Odysseys!
skytribe 17 #2 July 8, 2016 The container sizes determine the canopy size - ie. J3 will fit 170 main and between a 160 - 176 reserve. Sure there's a little leeway on different sizes but this is what the manufacturer says. Take a look at the sizing chart. http://www.sunpath.com/canopysizing.php The harness is what fits you and a container will have details of the harness with a code like C16 or B18. The first letter indicates the yoke size - A being the smallest and D being the biggest. The number indicates the size of the main lift web. So you can can have the same size container lets say a J1 with two completely different harnesses - one may for a small girl and one made for a large guy. So trying on a local rig only really works if you are the same size and dimensions as the person who it was built for. It may give you a rough approximation. The difference between a J3 and a J1 in terms of physically container size really isnt that much in the big scale of things.

Alleyoop 0 #4 July 8, 2016 I might have been a little vague in what I meant, I see. I was referring to the physical container size, not the harness. So I was wondering, harness aside, how big a difference there was between the J4K I have seen myself, and the J3K. Down to the J1KS for that matter. I'm just a bit worried about the container will be too large, for it to be worth buying a new rig now. If so, then I would rather just search for another used rig, that will fit me and a 170 (Sabre 2), and postpone the purchase of a new rig until I have the skill to down size one step further. The luck have yet to be on my side regarding that though. I will contact Sun Path as well! I would still love to see some pictures of a J3K, or just Odyssey designs in general. skytribe 17 #5 July 8, 2016 Speak to Sunpath and buy what you are going to be jumping in it now, not the future. Trying to squeeze a large canopy into a small container - looks crap and stresses the container more than its needs to be and makes packing more of a battle if your not experienced at packing. If you not happy jumping a 150 main then you shouldn't have that size as a reserve. Which is what J1 is sized for. The difference between a J1KL and an J3 on the main container size I believe is not much both are designed for 170 mains- the J3 holds a larger size reserve than the J1KL. (160 -176 rather than a 143-150) sized reserve. The J1KS has a small main tray designed for 150s. So in essence its a 150 main/150 reserve container. A J4 is designed for a bigger main and a bigger reserve than the J3. So its in the 170-190 reserve and 190 sized main. So it is generally a bit bigger to hold bigger main and reserve canopies. (Think 190/190 container) Rather than simply looking at sizes of containers - look at what canopies you are wanting to jump. That then determines the container sizing. Not the other way around. If your going to be jumping a 170 and that's your comfort then a J3 is probably the way to go - 170 main and a 176 reserve. Be comfortable with your wing loading for either canopy. The J3 will allow a downsize of a main to a 150 in time, it will just be a little soft and require shorter closing loop.
