I can't believe I just heard of this and people aren't up in arms.

Smokers need to unite. We are a minority of people who's been picked on too fucking long.
State needs more money, raise taxes on cigarettes. Health costs too high, blame the smokers.
Wife not giving you sex, hmmm well i'm sure if we try hard enough we could find a way to blame smokers for that too.

Last i heard poor diet, and lack of exercise are just as harmful to your health as smoking, but could you imagine the outrage if a company fired fat people, people who eat fast food more than once a week, or people who never exercise.

COMPLETE BULLSHIT!

How ever I'll agree with you on this. It's discrimination. What's next, drinkers?

Smoking and bad food are both unhealthy, but when I sit down at a restaurant and order something healthy while everyone around me eats junk food at least I don't get fat from it. I really prefer clean air. I can't stand walking through a cloud of smoke to get into most buildings. Kill yourself if you want, but try not to stink up my clothes while you do it.

I don't disagree with that, but these people are being fired for smoking on their OWN TIME. not during work.

Oh my goodness...I'm supporting smokers! :o I don't think smoking should be allowed in restaurants/bars because secondhand smoke is deadly, however, what someone does in their own house on their own time (as long as it isn't something like insider trading) has nothing to do with the company they work for.
There's a thin line between Saturday night and Sunday morning

How about obesity next? Force people to diet & exercise for their own good by threatening to fire anyone who is fat, it should work out great!

Really this is unbelievable, if someone smokes it's none of the company's damned business, I hope the lawyers leave a smouldering crater.

It is if:

* Smokers spend less hours immersed in their work because they are haffing ciggy breaks.

* Smokers smoke is breathed by other company employees.

* Smokers stink of smoke around the office.

* Smokers have more days off sick each year.

* Smokers hang around outside the company offices smoking like a bunch of kids.

Lets be honest about this: smoking is a disgusting dangerous habit. Smokers smell really bad. In fact that is an understatement: they stink. Most smokers only do it because they are addicted and simply do not possess the willpower to quit.

We do not want our kids smoking.

I know this because I finally managed to quit after being addicted for 20 years.

The tobacco companies are run and staffed by evil cynical bastards who should all be rounded up in a field and shot. They are no different from heroin pushers and suppliers.

If they choose to peddle highly addictive cancer causing filth, then yes I guess burning them is probably even better than shooting them :)

Actually, I was talking about the smokers. I see I didn't state that clearly.

I wouldn't advocate terminating smokers - they are the victims. Many millions of them need society to give them a helping hand to quit. I was only able to once all my smoking friends had quit or gone someplace else. It is much easier to quit if there is no temptation.

Are you a smoker? If so, maybe you could answer this: If you weren't a smoker, knowing everything you know right now, would you start smoking?

What is this liberal nonsense? I guess the world owes me living as well. And all this time I thought I was responsible for my personal well being...

The bottom line is the company has no business retroactively establishing a policy that affects existing employees. If they want to "ban" smokers from employment they need to do it moving forward and not hire smokers...oh wait isn't that discrimination as well, maybe not, there aren't too many laws on the books protecting smokers to begin with.

- I dont wholey aggree with you there - None smokers are the victims of the smokers passive exhaust - we have little or no choice.
The smokers, on the other hand choose to smoke - no one makes them, they aren't really victims of anything other than their own weakness.

I agree with you position, but not your rant.

While I don't smoke I do respect the rights of others to smoke...As long as they don't affect me.

That means that as long as you don't make me smell your smoke, then feel free to blaze away.

I do however find that it is funny that people bitch about the cost of health care in this country, but then smoke, drink, and eat junk food.

I don't care if you smoke....As long as you don't make me smell it, or make me pay for your health problems cause of it.

But it is not an employers place to make that call. They could deny them health insurance, but not employment based on that IMO.

Careful,

We choose to jump from great heights, certainly one could argue we have a greater health risk and absenteeism (esp on sunny Fridays).

I grew up in a country that I believed to be free, I have a fear that it is becoming less so.

I have no problem at all with restrictions placed on what you do at work - when I am off the clock, it's my time.
illegible usually

To state that is to discount the addictive properties of nicotine.

If cigarettes weren't addictive, how many people do you think would put up with the bad breath, the coughing up shit, the smelling terrible, the having to go outside and stand in the cold and rain for a smoke, the high risk of hear disease and cancer, the increased bronchial illnesses and the spiralling cost?

I don't smoke and will not start smoking. I also will not go on a witch hunt against those who do because society says it's an OK thing to do at present. I'm glad you quit, but DAMN you are such a typical ex-smoker.

This discussion was about an employer mandating it's employees not smoke off the job. Way over the top and society's acceptance of such actions is pretty much a modern adaptation of an age old theme.

Who are they gonna ban next? Drinkers? Fat People? Women? Homosexuals?

You could make up arguments for each of those groups and how they negativly affect a companies productivity. Most of it would be untrue, but just the same......

Congrats, I too am a reformed smoker. I would say it was one of the hardest things for me to do.
