I think here we see the difference between those who know and understand something about the military and those who don't. Basically it's simple. This general has a job, and it's a crappy one. He has to get a bunch of young men and women to so something profoundly unnatural, Kill their fellow human beings. And he knows that psychology is one of the most important aspects of war. The men his Marines will fight are already fanatical. So he has to give them a reason to get gung-ho and fight hard themselves, partially because if they do not believe what they are doing, many more of his people will die than necessary. As far as international opinion goes it's not really that big a deal. The people on our side will accept it, and the people against us will just use it as every other bludgen they are willing to create.

...and then there is the 70% of the population in some countries that have not a clear cut opinion, that tends to get influenced by these kind of remarks. I do not blame him trying to galvanize the troops, as it is his job. I do not blame him for enjoying doing what he does either. But I think that making these remarks in front of cameras will have overall a more negative outcome than a positive one.

"The residents of a small Iraqi village have killed five insurgents who had attacked them for voting in last weekend's national elections.

Several other insurgents were also wounded.

The insurgents raided the village of al-Mudhiryah south of Baghdad after warning its inhabitants not to vote in the election.

The villagers fought back, killing five of the insurgents and wounding eight others.

The insurgents' cars were then set alight.

Al-Mudhiryah's tribal sheikh says his people are sick of being threatened by Islamic extremists."

If was probably quite "fun" and satisfying for these villagers to defend themselves against a band of thugs and murderers. I hope this response by the good people of Iraq catches on.

We send Marines places to kill people and break things.
