shropshire 0 #76 March 29, 2005 Hi again, I've just had another idea about this thread.... If you want to know who is the best American, (a) stop thinking about all of the self-centred politicians (almost to a [wo]man, they couldn't give a toss about any of you, they're in it for what they can get not what they can do!) (b) dont vote for the shallow trendy media types (actors, so-called pop stars etc) they add little or nothing to your culture and mostly live life styles that you wouldn't want your kids to even know about! I find our celebrity fixation is really anoying and worthless!. To find your real heros, go to your local hospital casuality (ER) unit and watch the porters cleaning up blood and shite for minimum wage, take a look at the paramedics, doctors, nurses and technicians saving lives and taking all sorts of abuse from all angles. Watch the fire men and police try to keep your city streets safe........ Take a look at the teachers of your kids putting something back into society... In short take a look in the mirror and IF you can look that person staring back at you in the eye and honestly say that you are being the very best person that you can be.... then you've found your answer...... otherwise vote for Barney .... Lucky... 0 #78 October 11, 2006 Quote That's the grade school history of Lincoln. He actually did a lot of very bad things as well. The war was perpetuated atleast 3 years due to his doing. He was in bed with big business and let them trade arms and goods to the south so that his big business friends gain incredible wealth. That is the tip of the iceberg. I would suggest some indepth reading. I honestly believe that although overall Lincoln did some good and he's remembered well, he's not the president that people think he was. WOW! The first Republican set teh stage for following repubs... He was in bed with big business and let them trade arms and goods to the south so that his big business friends gain incredible wealth. stoneycase 0 #81 October 11, 2006 Quote i expect that small, ignorant minds would say something like that. if somebody would bother to do a litlle research before blurting out opinions like this, they would honor his memory. yup, totally agree with you there...i was about to post something similar myself... alot of people are always amazed that emotions still run deep in the North and the South, especiallyl as it concerns the histories of the generals, Grant, Jackson, etc etc. it's easy to understand, really, especially if you think about in the context of how the emtions and situation could be similar to age-old conflicts and sentiments in the ME. i could tell you with certainty, that saying something similar about Stonewall is almost GUARANTEED of netting some energetic and possibly violent replies in the south...believe me (and not just the deep south, we're talking Virgnia...) IMHO, what the leaders of the Confederacy did with their available resources at the time was amazing. That's why they still study the nitty gritty at the Mil Academies I suppose (not just the strategy/tactics of the North). /pissing on someone's memory for no other reason than you don't agree with them makes you look less-than-intelligent //that being said, Jerry Falwell still deserves a solid kick in the balls, IMO Franklin Madison Jefferson I'm a sucker for the oldies...and occassionally, I still pull open sections of the Federalist Papers for enjoyment reading... IMO, in order to be great, you need a bit of luck. Why? Because you need to be put into a situation with seemingly insurmountable challenges (technically, politically, etc). Those 3 men were all faced with insurmountable challenges and they rose to the occassion to overcome obstacles and create effective solutions. Others have as well, sure, but nowhere in the "History of the West" will you find a more critical point in time where men were afforded the opportunity to think of more than just themselves, and build something for the future, a future I'm sure that is now FAR beyond any of their wildest dreams (or nightmares!!! lol)Does whisky count as beer? - Homer There's no justice like angry mob justice. - Skinner Be careful.
