My New Toy

Recommended Posts

Here's my new Bushmaster AR-15. Its got a collapsible stock and 16" barrel. I bought a case of mil-sup, and have already put 100 rds or so through it. Its a ton of fun to shoot. I'm going out to the range this week to see what kind of accuracy I can get out of it.

Yup - post-post ban, baby.

Oh, and full length bull barrel for extended firing.

Collapsible stocks aren't a big help in the accuracy department. I've heard they can wiggle a bit. You never see them in high-power rifle competition, where the serious accuracy shooters go.

What's the twist rate of the rifling?

"Mil-sup" should be "Mil surp". The "surp" stands for "surplus, or military ammo that is past it's storage date for war-fighting.

The 100 rounds is a good break-in to get the barrel seasoned and wear down any burrs in the rifling from manufacturing. You're ready for good slow-fire group size testing. Five shot groups, 100 yards, from sandbags on a bench.

Try different types and brands of ammo. Accuracy results can vary widely from one type to the next.

Welcome to the world of "assault weapon" ownership. You just made yourself an evil person in the eyes of many anti-gun folks, and they're all out to take your new possession away from you. If you're not a member of the NRA yet, now is the time to join, to help you keep that rifle.

Actually not, i have rethought about it and am terrified about the posibility that someone may try to steal my stereo, so i have gotten a hand granade to defend my house. My neighbour is quite happy about it, although he seems restless when we get together in the elevator.
Now I am after a cowboy hat and some nuclear grade plutonium so i can defend the whole neighborhood from the government. Any idea where i can get some?

A hand grenade is a poor choice for defense of property, and defense of self in close quarters. So is a nuclear weapon. Though I must admit, I'm not surprised by your choices. ;)

Nice!

If you don't mind me asking... What did that cost?

t

Just under $900. Bushmaster commands a premium price vs most other brands. Based on my research they seemed to have the fewest QC problems.

This isn't intended to be an accuracy machine, otherwise I'd have got a match trigger, longer stainless barrel, etc. Its just a mid-range plinker. I've got my hunting rifles for making tight groups a long-way away. I'm also considering buying an Accuracy International L96-A1 down the road for serious long-range target shooting.

The twist is 1 in 9.

I've heard both versions in common usage. I'm sure "surp" is more technically correct, though. My bad.

I am well aware of political ramifications of gun ownership. Thanks, though.

You make fun of my comment about people who want to take that rifle away from him...

You should note that until six months ago, that rifle was illegal for him to purchase in that configuration, because it had a collapsible stock, bayonet lug and flash suppressor. And there are still politicians trying to re-instate that expired ban. Therefore, my comment was perfectly valid.

If they're really trying to do it, it's not paranoia.

You know, that reminds me, what hsould we call guns made after the ban sunset? Post ban is used for after the ban was ennacted, but before it died. How about this:

Pre-ban
Post-ban
After-ban

ps - I'm still trying to get my hands on an "LEO only" marked AR-15, but not having any luck. Any reccomendations?
(I'd really like an LEO only AR-10, but I'm ont holding my breath)

Simple. Order a lower from someone like Superior Arms who will put any markings that you ask for on it with a reasonable charge. I would think it would be around $30 bucks for something that simple. You can have logos put on, lines of text, ect.
That spot isn't bad at all, the winds were strong and that was the issue! It was just on the downwind side.

Nice! In the spirit of "new toys" let me share with everyone 1 of many cool toys I have been obtaining as of late. This one is a beauty;) Made in late 86-early 87 and with a VERY low, 3 digit serial number.;)

1 in 9 twist? 62 gr nato SS109 should be one of the better choices for ammo or perhaps the Federal 69 gr BTHP gold medal match

The 1-in-9 twist rate is good for the standard 55 grain bullets, and the 62 grain. But I don't think it will stabilize the heavier bullets, and results with 69 grains and up will be questionable - those usually need a 1-in-7 twist, I think. Don't even think about trying the 77 or 80 grain stuff.

As configured, it should be a great rifle out to 300 yards with the lighter bullets. But beyond that, it's not ideal.

VERY nice.

LouDiamond; if you don't mind me asking, what do you do with that thing for enjoyment (nice piece, BTW)? (No, I am not being anti-anything, I am just curious)... Where do you shoot it and at what? Or is it more of an appreciation for the mehanics of it?
