Chards 0 #51 April 21, 2005 QuoteThe issue is teach the history, whether it's women's history, skydiving history, physics history, the Holocaust or what ever subject. That way you appreciate the advancements. You make a good point here - I'm a primary (elementary) school teacher and this is a useful tool in learning. By doing this, you can teach children to examine the underlying reasons for the way that things are (which helps provide solutions to the never-ending 'why?'), develop a deeper understanding and evaluate them, appreciating the fact that when things have changed, it is for a reason. 'What would it have been like to live through the Holocaust as a Jew? How would you have felt?' The feminist issue is a strange one - while girls are treated as equal to boys in many things today, both boys and girls pick up ideas of gender-stereotyping from a very young age, from their treatment (unconsciously) by the adults around them, at home, in school and through all forms of media. Girls should be taught, not that they are better than boys, or that they are lucky to be where they are, but that they have the potential to be whatever they want to in life, to achieve as much as they possibly can. That with the right equipment, instruction and/or practice - they can do anything (although, yes, they will be better at some things than others IMO, it is best to educate well, answer questions honestly and impart as many positive, encouraging values as you consciously can. *stumbles off soapbox* ********************************* "I have done that," says my memory. "I cannot have done that," says my pride, and remains adamant. At last, memory yields. - Nietzsche
flailchick 0 #52 April 22, 2005 Great post. I'm a peopleist. I've thrived in male dominated fields and sports my whole life - because that is who I am, and not to prove anything about women. I'm a firefighter with nearly 2000 tandems in my skydiving history. I do make the same money as my male counterparts because of the field I have chosen. I believe in people's rights, not women's rights above all others. Just my thoughts... (And I'd love to be a stay at home mom - but I make too much money and I'd go absolutely crazy without adult stimulation in my life!)
