I think they need to cut more! Why should I pay for somebody's health insurance?Why dont I pay there car insurance or car payment while I'm at it. Or pay for they to learn how to work? Who needs to learn how to work? Whats wrong with going to school to learn a trade and have student loans? Oh thats right, the freeloaders of the world want someone else to pay for it. I have never been rich by any means but I bust my ass paid my way through school full time while working full time and you find a way to get by. I have not looked into the numbers for this story but, usually when the media talks about "cuts" in funding somthing what really is happening is the "normal" increases have been reduced.

But saying the spening increases have been reduced doesn't have the same story impact.............

i like the way you think Rookie120. it's nice to hear someone say they don't expect the government to do for them what they can do for themselves. i admit there are always going to be some hard luck cases out there that do need assistance, but you are proving it can be done. i worked two jobs in high school, worked my way through college and am still busting arse. not once have i said...poor me why can't the government or some rich person do it for me. good on you Rookie120. if you keep that attitude up one day you will get where you want to go. most people sit and wait and you are going out to get it. i have a relative who constantly calls me asking for loans and i would love to help him, but you know why i don't. b/c he works maybe 20 hours a week and doesn't even make an effort to find another job. why, b/c he can call me and guilt me into giving him some money. meanwhile he has enough cash to smoke 2 packs of marlboros a day, hit the bar every night and live at a subsistence level. the significance of the cigs is that he can't comprehend that they are casing his respitory problems not to metion his cash problems. i have even offered him a job with me, but he would have to work 50-70 hours a week full time.....and you know what the answer to that one is already.

What you're not doing is looking at the hypothetical end to your model of a selfish nation. If there were zero assistance then we would litterally have people dying in the streets. Your model is viewable if you get ahold of a book about the Hoover 1 era, which Reagan and Bush 2 seem(ed) to want to immulate.

In Hoover's era, people were homeless by the millions and they were even turning toward Communism, not as an ideology, but for survival. Many rich who were benefiting from Hoovers corp cash giveaways actually voted out Hoover due to the fatc that they would suffer more if people rejected Capitalism than if the cash freebies stopped.

You are a young guy and like most young people, maybe a little idealistoc. Ya it would be nice to have everyone self-sufficient all the time, but that is beyong utopia.

As for your correlation from health insuranece to car insurance, these are the types of arguments that people turn to when theyreally don't have one and want to be semantic. An auto is somewhat of a luxury with public transit, but health insurance or public health care is a neccessity.

You won't like what you see when we keep putting personal and corp profits ahead of social care for each other. Why do you think the crime rate is so high as compared to some other socialist nations? If people can't eat they will die trying to survive. Most of us would do what we had to do to feed themselves and their kids, and bad things happen to good people. If your model was to be placed into effecst, you wouldn't like what you see.

I think it goes both ways at different times. Sometimes they are outright cuts, sometimes they are proposals that are cut.

Kinda like when Bush cut the proposals to cut the amount of arsenic we would have in the drinking water. Bush didn't overtly add arsenic to the drinking water, he refused to carry thru with the proposed cuts, vircarioulsy increasing the amount of arsenic we have in the water today.

Same with these cuts, which were done by our Republican Congress, if they are about proposals to the increase that are cut, then vicariously they are roadblocks to future assistance and are cuts.

Again, I don't know that these are proposals that are cuts as you conjectured, they may be overt cuts to existing prograns.

I joined the Navy right after high school, payed for my own college, worked 6 days a week inspecting railroads across America, 7 days a week inspecting railroad throughout Mexico. I made over 50k in the earlier 90's and payed high taxes on it. I supported this government and did as I should. Now what is wrong with expecting something back in return. I did not do it all so our government can go waltzing across the planet waging war. I did it because I believed that my hard work will help me and others in a time of need. You think you are so patriotic and talk like you are king shit. News flash, you are not secured in your job, it can disappear in a heartbeat (just ask the 25,000 who are losing their jobs with GM). You think you are secured with good health, that also can change in a heartbeat. Your home and property, well that too can be taken from you. Medicine and good healthcare, again, that also can be withheld from you. A high number of people you refer to as "freeloaders" are people who have fought for this country. They are people who have toiled long thankless hours in sweatbox factories. A high number of these people lost pensions that were wasted by management. I am not religous but I will pray that with your attitude towards the people in need that you too find yourself in need and recieve none.

Maybe, but I will always have a job. I have been laid off before and guess what, 3 hours looking and I had a new job. Wasnt in my profession, pay wasnt the best but guess what, still had a roof over my head and food on the table. Actually I have been layed off a few times and always found another job within a couple days. Never sat on my ass for 6 months waitting for the Unemployment checks to stop before I started looking.

I think you are very naive about how real life works. Private health insurance is about a corporation trying to make money from you, which is allright unless it is your health what it is at stake. The moment that you stop being an incoming for them and you became an expense, possibly due to an expensive illness, they will do what is legally possible to get rid of you.
Besides, Private insurance must be paid wether you work or not, and it can be hard to pay if you have no job. And maybe you have no job due to an illness that private insurance refuses to heal because you cannot pay because you don´t have a job.
Fortunately, for now, i have put in taxes towards public healthcare much more than what i have gotten back. And i know that at this very same moment, someone is abusing the system and enjoying my taxes. But guess what, if i ever find myself in need of a VERY expensive treatment, i know that i have public healthcare where the money will NEVER be an issue.

Just for laughs, go to your favourite private health insurance, and ask how much it costs... Do not forget to mention words like HIV, Cancer, Skydiving, Back problems, etc.

Why would I do that when all I do is skydive? A little sarcasm there. I think people are getting a little wound up here and I want to lighten it up a bit. But I have bought my own health care out of pocket. Cost me $145 a month. My employer now has my insurance covered for the most part but it costs me about $25 a month for health, vision and dental. A damn good deal I think.

Rookie, honestly I do not wish my illness on you or anyone else. My response was written out of emotion and wish to take it back. I do, however, wish that this country would get back on track and help those in need. I am closing in on 50 now, at one time I believed that anyone who asked the government for help was a freeloader. Why should MY money go to help someone bedridden with cancer or AIDS. It is not my problem. That is how I felt when I was young and healthy. My, my, how we change our tune when we find ourselves in a simialer situation. It is truely sad that ofton that is what it takes. I was a jerk for making fun of gay people with AIDS. Never did I ever believe that the illness they were dealing with would ever affect myself. Good for you! No one should feel guilty about collecting SSDI for legitimate reasons. You've paid into the system and now you need its benefit. SSDI is not a free handout like other 'entitlements' (of course other entitlements can be legitimate also). It's when these programs are abused that pisses people off. As you said, you're fighting a disease and feel like shit daily. Accept your SSDI and don't think twice about it.

Hang in there, and I will keep you in my prayers. People like you deserve our compassion, not our critcism.
