John G. Roberts Nominated as Next SCOTUS Justice

Recommended Posts

John G. Roberts, an appellate district judge and longtime appellate attorney who has plenty of experience being before the Supreme Court.

Apparently this guy won some pretty easy support when he was nominated by Bush, Jr. in 2003.

I think the fact that he was just confirmed a couple of years ago without much opposition is a politically brilliant move by Bush, Jr. Senators who supported him and gave him a yes vote back then will have a hard time Borking him this time around.

I don't think this will be too ugly on a personal level.

Roe is dead in the water. Welcome to the American Christian Taliban Theocracy.

GOPers want Government off your back and out of your life, but apparently it's fine to have government in a woman's uterus.

Next up--Mandatory Protestant Prayer in Schools.

Free Speech is gone, the slope greased with the inevitable flag burning laws.

God help us. We're on our way to Orwell's 1984, albeit 21 years late...

Fuck.

I'm pro choice, and I wouldn't be sad to see Roe overturned. I think it's pretty crummy law, actually. I'd much rather see abortion rights given a firmer footing than the (easily attacked by lawmakers) nebulous penumbra rights.

In a way, a lot of pro-life politicians are actually protected by Roe vs. Wade. If it's overturned and they actually start passing laws severely restricting abortion, some of them might get an unexpected reaction from the electorate.

damn...welcome to drama class. if i had to choose one word to describe that description of a possible future it would be "excessive", even from a liberal standpoint.

do you really believe that your free speech is gone?

do you really believe that mandatory prayer in school will happen?

i assume you were just being overly dramatic.

Unfortunately, no one in politics apparently does. Even more unfortunately, I don't think the voters do, either.

Do the neocons in the US today, envision the end of free speech and the effective end of freedom in the US?

Who knows? Do you think German citizens, all caught up in the fervor or nationalism, envisioned the slaughter of millions of undesirables?

Like most catastrophic events, the best time for intervention is early in the curve. Once you hit the ground, it's pretty much too late, don't you think?

I think our free speech is 'going'. not yet gone - but defnitely going

mandatory prayer? You bet, only a matter of time. We are already integrating Christianity with the government at a scale I have not seen in my lifetime. How long do you think it will take to intergrate it with the laws of this country, especially with Christian right-wingers in the supremem court and in the Congress/Senate?

Liberals want to run your life....They want to make you pay for others.

How is that any different?

Politicians ALL get up in the average mans cornflakes.

The choice is who do you want trying to run your life and why?

I'd rather not have liberals telling me how I can live my life, and making me pay for those who are to lazy to live their own life.

Free speech is not going anywhere. You can claim all day that it is but the facts say otherwise. You will bring up the "flag burning" BS. Well its not in the Constitution yet now is it?

Hardley. Not a chance. Now you can and will claim that a "Moment of silence" is, but I think if you think that the Constitution and the First is gonna be ignored, think again.

I DO wish that all of you that cry about the First gave a shit about the Second.

i think you've got it backwards...

christianity has been being plucked out of govt. as time has moved on. this country was founded on principles that were taken directly from christianity and western european culture. i'm not a practicing religious person but, it would be a hard argument to say that there is more protestant influence on govt. today than there was fifty years ago.

I was just reading the 1960 Information Please almanac. In 1960, there were fewer than 1,000,000 Muslims in the US; not that many more Jews, and too few of much of anything else (besides Catholic and Protestant) to even warrant mention.

US was much more homogeneous 50 years ago, and where it wasn't (e.g. color), the people with the power just didn't acknowledge those without it. So while it was more accepted that "of course you have to say 'so help me God'," it also was almost certain to reflect your personal beliefs.

The problem with that "we are normal and people not like us aren't" approach is that the people with the power won't always have it. Then the world they set up will either grow gracefully, or collapse -- depends in part on the respect they treat those who used to "not matter."

:D thanks.

we don't agree about what's happening in our country to any extent. so, from my point of view, i'm looking out for your right to not have a completely f'd up country. :D

the fact that there are people on both sides of the social and political aisle keeps the philosophy needle somewhere in the middle all of the time.

Do you think that the lefties resposible for the build up of the Soviet Union envisioned the Millions that would be slaughtered because of it? Do you that that at the time when Clinton was tying the hands of the CIA that he envisioning an attack at the scale of the world trade center?

Seems like a good choice. Not insanely conservative and very well qualified.

About freedom of choice. I really don’t know. I feel a woman should have the right to choose but lately I am not so sure. You should have the right to choose only when your choice of conceiving or engaging in intercourse was not given. In cases of rape, molestation, incest, or if the form of birth control that was used did not work. It will be very hard to determine the last one. I guess if it were a black or white issue there would not be so much to debate.
