QuoteThat's the thing that is SCARY. There is NO solution to this.
Yes there is! Arm yourself because the police are stretched thin here. I am in Baton Rouge where a lot of the people are being hauled to. So far there was a small riot downtown at the Red Cross station. People have been robbed leaving the grocery store. A lady got shot and car jacked in Denham Springs next to a park where a lot of them are being dropped off at. I personaly held up a guy in my Apt complex yesterday with a 12guage who was breaking into cars in our parking lot. He told me he was just doing what he needed to do to survive. I havent figured out how he planned on eating a car stereo. Things are getting bad here in town. I thought I was going to stay here for sometime but I am considering changing jobs and moving out because it is going to get a lot worse here before it gets better. Need to get my resume up to date ASAP. Anyone want to help me spellcheck? Everybody knows I cant do it myself.

QuoteIt would be ok if they were "white" refugees huh ?
I don't care what color they are. I am not a racist person, just in case you got the wrong idea. This has nothing to do with color, but more so behavior.
QuoteInteresting phrase - men will die as well.
True...I just know people have been throwing the "there are women and children" comment up. Yes..MEN will die as well.

First hand encounters of what I'm talking about.
Be careful Brad.
I've read many reports that we are only one emergency away from a civil/class war in this country. We thought that triggers like race riots in LA, championship victory idiotic mob action, police brutality, etc would spur it. Something like this storm provides more internal motivation and rage.
Study up on mob action - what's happening in the south right now is textbook.

>I havent figured out how he planned on eating a car stereo.
Reminds me of a quote from Lemony Snicket about how one should never steal from a museum:
"Now, ordinarily of course, it is wrong to steal the painting. But if you were very hungry, it might be OK to steal the painting, take it home, and eat it."

We are as powerful as we want to be. We could have 500 private aircraft there in two hours if they would open the airspace, ferrying supplies in and refugees out. We could have airliners lined up in the New Orleans airport (which has been re-opened) airlifting people to towns all over the US. And this could have been ready to go on Tuesday.
>What comes to my mind, is maybe they would be able to get these
> people out faster and more efficiently if half of our troops weren't
> over seas trying to create democracy.
Definitely true, but again, hindsight is 20/20.
> Them hounding is not going to make this go any faster . . .
An NPR reporter hounding a Homeland Security official got aid delivered to the Convention Center yesterday.
>Nothing else can be done though..at this time..
Nonsense. We can do better, and we must. It's been _five_days_ and we're just now getting large quantities of supplies into the worst-hit areas.
QuoteDammit....these people are AMERICANS !!!!!
Yes..and there are all types of Americans. Good ones, bad ones, ones that work and don't choose to work, ones that commit murder, ones that are teachers, ones that expect things be done for them, ones that don't have the ability to provide for themselves, homeless, fat, skinny, smart, stupid.......
BUT....there is only so much that other people can do for someone else if they are not willing to help themselves.
F LORIDA!
QuoteTell them: Anyone who wants back in the doors must be in by 8:00pm; at that time, the doors will be locked. Then, don't let them back out until 7:00am or something like that. If they keep wondering our streets like they are, Houston will have no choice but to put a city wide night-time curfew into affect....THESE are the types of things I see in our new future.
How would that work? They would just take their bands off their arms and stay out all night.
Please be safe and don't go out alone.

Communications are terrible right now all around. That's no excuse for violence, or for expecting people to cut you slack in politeness and human behavior. But a lot of those people are at the end of their ropes.
And yes, some of them have much shorter ropes than a lot of people.

They have to have the bands on to get back in. I'm sure they would be able to tell if they were taken off because they would be broken and either taped back on or gum stuck to them..who knows. It's just an idea I thought about that might help to get some kind of order back into this city.

QuoteQuoteA lot of the folks who were turned away from the Astrodome have nowhere else to go. They were told to get out of NO any way they could; they found a car and came here on their own. Now they get here, and find out they should have taken the bus.
They were told only those who were in the dome in LA would be allowed into the Astrodome, it was a transport from one place to another...not a "Go to Houston and get a place to stay." Those who go to the dome there in time, are still being provided shelter at the Astrodome. Those who just drove themselves here hoping for a place to stay, had no where to stay in NO either.QuoteBut a lot of those people are at the end of their ropes.
And yes, some of them have much shorter ropes than a lot of people.
Understandable...but what changes in lifestyle and safety are we, as Houstonians, compromising for ourselves now that we have reached out a helping hand.
QuoteArming yourself is only a temp solution.
It's the only solution for me personaly. I wont be able to wait for the ploice. I need to protect me and my fiance. How you do that now is with brute violent force when you are put in harms way. Sitting down to chat is not going to work with someone trying to steal, or do whatever towards you. I take Nicole to work and I pick her up. carrying concealed is nothing new but it serves a higher purpose now. I am not concerned about the long term solution, I can only deal with whats thrown in my face. What is supposed to happen 6 months from now dont mean shit to me right now. As the famious words of Eric Cartman "Take it just one day at a time"
QuoteA lot of the folks who were turned away from the Astrodome have nowhere else to go. They were told to get out of NO any way they could; they found a car and came here on their own. Now they get here, and find out they should have taken the bus. Many are out of gas and out of money.
No kidding and they are running out of gas right on I-10 and I live about 1/2 mile from I-10 and they are leaving the cars in the middle of the road and that is where they decide to bring the chaos to BR. It sucks but I'm dealling with it. Thats all I can do.

It's not all pretty. If we keep on the pace we've started on, we'll pick up a LOT of kudos for doing the right thing. On the way, we'll pick up some hardworking new residents who are glad to start over somewhere else. We'll also pick up a number of longterm welfare recipients, and hoodlums.Quotewhat changes in lifestyle and safety are we, as Houstonians, compromising for ourselves now that we have reached out a helping hand.
Baton Rouge and places like that, with some money and closer to NO, have it far worse when it comes to hoodlums. That doesn't make it OK for Houston either, though.
I really hope that some of the folks end up with the gumption to really move and start over, and don't just try to re-create what they had. Those are the people who make a new country.

Sorry to hear about the problems your experiencing, I sure as hell wouldn't want to blast some SOB but if thats what you got to do

Have you considered plan B: Evacuate!!! Excuse me not PC
![[:/] [:/]](/uploads/emoticons/dry.png)
Instead of fighting mother nature your dealing with human nature. Do you want to rely on the Gov't to protect you from this new storm surge?
Don't panic, you've got options, just come up with a plan in just in case.
Be careful

QuoteThe first thing I would like to see is a night time curfew set on everyone taking refuge in the AstroDome...BEFORE they are forced to put one on the entire city.
Tell them: Anyone who wants back in the doors must be in by 8:00pm; at that time, the doors will be locked. Then, don't let them back out until 7:00am or something like that. That's what is worrying me.

Darn good idea! If, a curfew is put in place, all hell could break loose. They have to do something, though. It just boggles my little brain, how people reach-out to help someone else and get that hand bit off!? Maybe, things will settle down. I'm sure, the Houston police are monitoring the situation. They can always be loaded-back on busses and dumped at the state line! That might be ugly but, they have to realize, they are in actuality... invited guests of Houston.

For what it's worth.. I'm sorry that you are taking so much flack from people here and for what? For your honesty in relaying how scared you are about a situation that you have no control over.
