Roberts nominated for Chief

Recommended Posts

Bush today nominated Roberts for Chief Justice of the supreme court. I bet the bomb shells and all the garbage the left can fabricate is going to get thick in the next few weeks. I have a feeling it is going to get very ugly.

What an insult to the current justices. He should have picked Scalia.

Apparently only 5 of 16 times has the new chief justice been selected from those already serving, so what Bush has done is common, but I think bad form.
People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am

Roberts is a good man; very highly thought of. I'm not at all convinced yet that he can take an open-minded look at things. That would be an important consideration to me. People who automatically take one side, and then have to be convinced that it's wrong, are not as good a choice for judge as those who have to be convinced to take a side in the first place.

Just to get it out of the way, what was done to Bork was appalling.

You conclude he fits this description based on what?

I thought she already put in for retirement? Dont you think that would look bad "Yeah I'm gonna retire, Oh I'm nominated for chief? Ok I'll stay on the court"

You're thinking of O'Connor.

My only hope is that whomever becomes chief upholds the constitution - period, and keep his religious beliefs and personal opinions to himself

That would be nice if the one's on the left did the same with there beliefs also. Give me a break, does someones religion scare you that much. Seems lately they have been voting a lot on there personal beliefs and not the constitution.

Religion only scares me when people attempt to use the law to force everyone else into line with their own religious ideas of right and wrong.

I believe Scalia would make a really good chief justice. Even though I don't agree with him on his interpretation of the constitution sometimes, I think he takes each case and looks at all the facts first, before making up his mind, and he seems to be willing to listen to other points of view. I think a chief justice should be picked from the existing justices, rather than placing a newbie in charge.

Although I also think Scalia would be a great choice for Chief Justice, I also think that sometimes a bit of a shakeup is needed. Despite that fact that he may be "Chief Justice" he also is but one of nine voices on the bench. Also, as a practical standpoint, confirmation of Chief Justice at the same time as SCOTUS confirmation makes pragmatic sense.

We're gonna need to confirm two new justices and a Chief Justice. We might as well get it into two hearings instead of three.

>does someones religion scare you that much.

Check out Saudi Arabia for an example of a scary religion. Not because the religion itself is scary, but because they have integrated it into their government. We've managed (mostly) to avoid that mistake so far; let's hope the supreme court continues to avoid that mistake.

If the constitution were upheld to the letter, there would be no debate about school prayer and the tcs in government buildings, etc.

Yeah, and I would be able to own a rocket launcher. So we all have had to make some sacrifices.

I'd like an end to complaints about the court finding rights that are not in the Constitution. The complainers need to read the IXth and Xth Amendments sometime.

Just having one or two new people on the court is going to be a shake-up. I think the chief justice should be someone who's got some supreme court experience. Someone who doesn't have practical experience in the job may understand it in theory, but the reality is sometimes radically different.

Quite a libertarian view. Do you agree with those amendments?

(1) Yes, and (2) I don't understand the question. They are what they are, agreement or disagreement is moot.

However, as I understand it the Constitution specifies the obligations of the government and limits its intrusion in the lives of the people, which is a GOOD THING. The Constitution was not and is not intended to limit the rights of the people.
