riddler 0 #1 October 6, 2005 I love the stuff. I go to the store just about every day, and a few time a week, I'll buy a bag of oranges, so that every morning I can make my own orange juice after exercise. A good juicer runs about $30, and you make up the money quickly by squeezing your own, vs. buying juice at the store. I have a beef with restaurants - it's becoming darn near impossible to find any that squeeze their own OJ anymore! Everyone serves it out of a plastic jug. What's up with that? I can get that at Safeway. Next, they'll start serving microwave dinners for entrees. Sure, restaurant juicing machines are expensive, and they break frequently, but so are cappuccino machines, and just about every good restaurant has one of those. And it's not like I'm asking for a Coke or other name brand drink - if I'm paying $5 for a glass, I should get something that's not rancid after being pasteurized, filtered and sitting in a fridge for weeks. The American culture is all about low expectations, and Americans simply don't stand up for themselves. We settle for restaurant food that is terrible, we allow corporations to make laws in our name, such as "you can't bring your own wine in here - we want to charge you 4 times as much for the same wine". We always tip the waiter 15% or 20%, no matter how bad their service is. Why do we put up with this? Sure, I can talk to the manager and "make a scene" and they'll probably give me my money back - but it won't improve service or quality in the least, because just about everyone else doesn't complain. What do you think? Do you care if your OJ is fresh-squeezed?Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
Keith 0 #2 October 6, 2005 QuoteWe always tip the waiter 15% or 20%, no matter how bad their service is. Why do we put up with this? I don't put up with it. I usually tip 20%. If the service is exceptional I'll tip more. If the service is crappy I tip less. I was on a first date. We were one of two couples in the restaurant. It took 15 -20 minutes to be acknowledged after being seated. Took forever to get our meals and the only time we saw the waiter after being served was when he finally brought the check so I didn’t tip him. My date Keith (his name was Keith also) asked why, I said the service was crap. Keith said well the waiter was busy and besides he’s my friend. I said he couldn’t have been That busy with a total of four people in the place, and if he’s really your friend we should have gotten better service. Keith was pissed. I took him home. We never went out again. He was really cute too.Keith Don't Fuck with me Keith - J. Mandeville
lisamariewillbe 1 #3 October 6, 2005 QuoteThe American culture is all about low expectations, and Americans simply don't stand up for themselves What do we as americans have to stand up for? What if we dont drink juice? Quote We always tip the waiter 15% or 20%, no matter how bad their service is Not true at least for me, Ive given as little as NOTHING depending on how horrible of service. In other countries the servers also arent working for 2 bucks a hour. So when my service is avg to good I give 20 %. QuoteWhy do we put up with this? I never realized this was a problem, and even if it is, Id think there are more important things in the world to get stressed over, then my rights to fresh orange juice. QuoteSure, I can talk to the manager and "make a scene" and they'll probably give me my money back - you get more flies with orange juice then vinager. Even when I have bad service I am polite and tell the manager. On the other hand when I have good service I also tell the manager if its above avg. I once spent 20 mins on hold calling the Arbys comment line because the girl behind the counter was extremely nice and efficient. Later found out she recieved a $100.00 reward for that. Granted to some people that isnt alot of money, but to the kid behind the counter making min wage, I bet it was cool. Quotebecause just about everyone else doesn't complain Actually more people complain and look at the bad in everything and become so focused that they cant see when things are enjoyable. If you have a bad experience you are more likely to tell 10 of your friends , and then they will relate it to 6 of there friends and so on and so forth. More often then not, when people have a good experience they rarely speak about it to anyone. More companies realize it is more cost effective to keep current customers then produce new customers. It is about delivery of the issue though. QuoteDo you care if your OJ is fresh-squeezed? Let's just say that Florida orange juice leaves a bitter taste in my mouth so I try to avoid it. Now on the other hand, California orange juice, there's some good orange juice. Harvey Wallbanger, Harvey Wallbanger??? Hmm, can't say that I know him, but the name sounds familiar . . maybe we've had sex.Keith Don't Fuck with me Keith - J. Sen.Blutarsky 0 #9 October 7, 2005 There's a fresh juice shop near practically every intersection in downtown Chicago and there are ten times as many coffee shops where you can almost always pick up Odwalla, which is a quite good substitute. Sorry things are tough out by you. Blutarsky 2008. No Prisoners!
riddler 0 #10 October 7, 2005 QuoteOdwalla Remember when Odwalla killed a few people, including some kids? They used to not pasturize the juice, and I guess some of their fruit was picked up off the ground after falling in cow shit - the bacteria ended up killing some people. After that, they started pasteurizing all the juice. I don't drink it anymore. Here is Denver, we have Jamba Juice (only a few), and they used to ALL squeeze their own OJ, but now less than half of them do. I don't go there anymore. You can still get it at juice bars, but seems to me that you should be able to get it at resteraunts too. QuoteI'm thinking about getting a juicer. Any suggestions? Man, it's like everything else. How much do you want to spend? Seriously, I have a Cuisinart right now - $30 at Bed, Bath and Beyond - Cuisinart makes pretty good juicers and blenders - they are about as low-end as I would go. Anything less is going to break and get sticky stuff everywhere. Make sure you rinse in cold water (so you don't warp the plastic) immediately after juicing (I do it before I even let myself drink the juice).Trapped on the surface of a sphere. Sopheavy 0 #11 October 7, 2005 There's several Jamba Juice in town here. I used to like them but their orange juice sucks (at least where I've been). They have this machine that juice it and they juice the whole thing (skin, rind, seeds, and all); hence the slight bitter aftertaste. I have a juicer at home Jack Lelane juicer and I really like it but I hate cleaning it up. So it's sitting in the cabinet for the longest. My favorite is honeydew and apples together and then carrots with apples. For orange juice, I just juice it by itself. When I go to Le Peep, I get half a quart of oj and can drink it in one sitting. It's so sweet and fresh, I wonder if they put drugs in it. Unless maybe they add a little bit of sugar....I don't know.---------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------- If you want to see the rainbow, you gotta put up with the storm.
