AFF Training

Recommended Posts

Using it before may help with the sensory overload, since you'll be more accustomed to the airflow, body position and so on. But I'd ask the instructors that are going to do your AFF. They may want to see you in the air first and use the tunnel to correct specific issues or they may have coaching deals where they can work with you in the tunnel themselves.

FWIW - If it were up to me and I had a tunnel in my back yard, I'd have all first jump students spend a couple of minutes in the tunnel going over the TLO's of their first dive.
Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.

I am recently off AFF and I did some tunnel time... here is my opinion...

I did tunnel time after my level 3 and KNEW after that I would have no problems finishing AFF with that training, granted mine was for 10 minutes and not 4.

I think if I were you, i would use that tunnel time after your level 1 or 2 if you feel comfortable about the jumps in general. There isnt a lot to your level one other than arching, not getting brain lock, and pulling yourself. I would use it before your level 3 because that is the first time you will be falling without someone holding on to you, and it would be nice going into the jump knowing you could stay stable (I hear 3 and 4 are the most frequently failed).

but, thats just my opinion and i dont know jack. That is how I would do it.

I think WyoNewb nailed it there. In the spring I had an AFF student who had jumpers in his family. He had read everything he could find and was impressive with his knowledge. He had also spent several minutes in the tunnel and was competent with his stability. I tried to mention ahead of time that the experience is a bit different without the walls, 2 miles up and someone has thrown a planet at you. He laughed.

It actually emphasized the sensory overload and it was quite a while before he came back to finish AFF and become a fine example of a new skydiver.

Having done a tandem, you will be better equipped than he was but I also think it will do you more good after level 2 (or Cat B) and before level 3 (or Cat C). Of course, as long as mention to the person running the tunnel you are preparing for AFF, it will help at any time. After all, 4 minutes is like 4 skydives with fewer distractions.

Enjoy the tunnel and your AFF.

Agreed.

L1 and 2 can be pretty mechanical. Wind it up and let it go. L3 and L4 there is now "feel" involved. If that feel isn't there yet, then the chances are good that the student will be overwhelmed on the dive.
