Last of the big spenders, huh? OK, I drove my Expedition 300 miles in the last year. It gets about 13 MPG. All of it was hauling stuff like 5000lbs of top soil, mulch etc, and various tools like a roto-tiller. Not one drop of gas has been used on anything that could have been done with an automobile. Looks like we're even then. I couldn't have flown a single mile in my automobile. I drove a rented Expedition around Santa Fe NM (booked an "economy" car but they were all out so I got a "free upgrade"). Hated the thing, what a barge!... sinker 0 #53 December 6, 2005 QuoteI can't stand seeing people drive around town in huge SUVs that get 10 miles to the gallon - personally I think it's extremely wasteful. Sorry sister, my huge SUV gets 15 MPG in the city and 19 on the highway. And it has a big V8 in it. And it's a vehicle of necessity. I have 4 kids, we have a big dog, we camp alot, we live in a part of the country that is hilly and in the winter it gets very icy (it's a 4x4), and in the rain it's very slick. One of your cute little Prius' just won't cut it for us. So do people who own Lincoln Navigators, Chevy Tahoes, Range Rovers etc. Depends on your definition of "wasteful." I have no problem with Kallend flying his plane. I do have a problem when he lectures others about wasting gas.

No, actually it's better for a vehicle thats used infrequently to have a full tank of gas because it prevents condensation from forming in the gas tank and causing rust which can then be sucked into the engine. I keep my Harleys gas tank filled over the winter too. I start the Harley and the Expedition up from time to time just to let them run a little. I also change the fluids in both before winter. I'd probably sell the beast if I didn't get much use out of it, but it's useful to have it there when I do want to use it. As an example, we are putting in a pretty large garden in the front yard right now and needed the 5000 lbs of topsoil I mentioned earlier. We also neede to about 1200 lbs of peat moss and about the same amount of manure. We went to U-haul to get a trailer so we could get it all in one trip and they were out of trailers and pick-up trucks so we hade to make 3 trips. Had I not had the Expedition, we couldn't have done anything. There's something to be said for the convenience of having it when you want it. I guess for the same reason you don't rent a plane. Agreed, but I wouldn't consider the tank a "mechanical part". Lots of working parts, from the engine camshafts and followers, and the transmission, to the various pumps and motors will have their life expectancy shortened, and various seals lose flexibility, if not used frequently. Best thing to get a long life is regular workout (just like your cardiovascular system).... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one. sinker 0 #66 December 6, 2005 i love the long-EZs.... they're awesome. and the canard design is so inherently safe too. i liked the berkut better, w/ retracts and all, but the company folded. my dad and I used to go out to mojave when we lived at Edwards AFB and see what Rutan was up to... great stuff out there. you can get an EZ pretty cheap too, less than a prius, that's for sure. -the artist formerly known as sinker

alison 0 #73 December 6, 2005 Hi sinker, I can understand people who have a legitimate need for a larger vehicle driving them. I guess I should have been more specific in that it's the blatant wastefulness of people who really don't need them that bugs me. I know a couple who has one child and live in an urban area and both parents drive SUVs. I realize it's none of my business what other people drive, but when I see people consuming precious resources with no regard for conservation when it is completely unnecessary, it irks me and I can't help it. I can do my part to conserve, but when very few people seem to contribute it gets frustrating.
Steel 0 #74 December 6, 2005 Quote I only get pissed at the big SUVs when they pull well out into the intersection blocking my view, so they HAVE to go before I do. Wendy W. No "big" SUV can block my view. However, I will say that I find the ego that some SUV drivers exhibit is laughable. The other day some SUV driver thought that I had cut him off. So a little bit later he sped up so that he could cross right in front of me thinking he would scare me. I laughed it off thinking what an idiot. Had he not sped away, if I would have hit him, I would have destroyed his little vehicle and probably not caused any damage whatsoever to my truck, and the funniest thing is that it would have been his fault. I think this guy was delusional and mistook me for some wussy driving a hybrid that he could bully around. However, it just seems strange that he could have made such a mistake. Go figure. BTW. my trust truck is the one on the right Towering over that little H2 .If I could make a wish, I think I'd pass. Can't think of anything I need No cigarettes, no sleep, no light, no sound. No "big" SUV can block my view. Courtesy is a simple thing. When I'm in my truck and in the lane next to the little spec, I stay back enough so he can see cross traffic past my front. I can see over him. Both can see and it doesn't hurt anyone. And it's safer for all. Most of the 'Pull forward and block the view' in my neighborhood are middle aged white women who are a bit overweight - the most selfish drivers of all. ...
