The tide is turning

President George Bush has withdrawn his opposition to legislation banning cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment of terrorist suspects.
He said it would show the world that the US did not use torture.
...
Mr Bush had threatened to veto the measure, saying it would constrain the military and intelligence agencies.

But when both the Senate and the House of Representatives came out overwhelmingly in favour of the legislation, Mr Bush did not have much choice, says the BBC's Adam Brookes - even though it is a blow to presidential authority.

It is also being seen as bitter personal defeat for Vice-President Dick Cheney, who had telephoned every Republican senator to try to get the measure derailed.

I think time is running out for poor old George and his buddies.

I think the bigger question right now is do they hand people over to other nationals to get the tortured.

It's almost comical that whenever US officials get asked the question they say "US nationals do not torture people"... which is odd, because that's not actually the question being asked.

Guess we'll find out soon enough. The EU's just launched an investigation into the allegations stating that "the information gathered to date reinforced the credibility of the allegations concerning the transport and temporary detention of detainees -- outside all judicial procedure -- in European countries."

An almost equally comical but sad case has just been brought before the US courts too, where a German national was snatched by the CIA and flown out of Europe to Afghanistan where he was held for 5 months before being dumped in the middle of a wood back in Europe after the CIA realised they had the wrong man!

It reads like something out of a Hollywood comedy but the reality must be awful for those involved in these kidnappings.

Now if we can only remove torture from our movies we will truely find inner peace.

Those who wish to kill us will truely know we are a bunch of saps.>:(
