Why I love my concealed carry permit

I still won't ever support the level of presence of weapons I see in the US.

That's okay... I'll protect you. ;)

So you think I was asking for it by being in a bad part of town? Maybe that I was looking for it?

Nope...didn't say that at all...

Quote

I don't believe that where I was or what I was doing matters. I should be safe wherever I choose to go and whenever I go there. WOW. That was idealistic of me.

Of course it matters. The pro gun crowd has been going on for quite some time how they are so strong on situational awareness and everything.

Quote

That aside. No, I don't usually go to that area of town. I was delivering Christmas presents to sponsored families in need. I'll do it again next year and you can bet I'll be carrying.

So, basically you would not have done what you did if it wasn't for the fact that you had a gun...I think that was exactly the point I was making earlier.

I do have a question for you though. Since in an earlier post you advocated how society would be a lot better if everybody had a gun. How would you have reacted if they pulled a gun first? Or if three of his buddies pulled a gun on you as soon as you reached for yours?

I am happy you are okay, but to me a gun should be the same as an AAD. If you wouldn't jump without an AAD maybe you shouldn't jump at all...Similarly, if you need a gun to go into a specific neighbourhood, maybe you should reconsider that as well.... Sounds like you would have saved yourself quite a bit of stress....

Flame away....and Merry Christmas.

I don't think where I am or what I'm doing should matter. I have the right to defend myself. I'm not a Brit. :o

No. That isn't what I said.
I would still participate in the same things as I do now if I didn't have a gun. The good outweighs the bad IMO.

If I hadn't had a gun this time, I don't know if I would have been able to participate in the same activity ever again.

If he'd pulled a gun first, I would have killed him. The difference between the thugs and me is that I get in a hell of a lot more target practice and have a lot more training.

I also believe that the element of surprise is vital in concealed carry. They never saw me reach for a gun and probably wouldn't have expected it from me even if they had.

I don't pretend to have all the answers. I'm just happy that I had the ability to protect myself.

I love how these conversations always come down to bravado.....

you. don't. have. a. clue. this has nothing to do w/ bravado. what a lame attempt for you to excuse kara's argument.

i hope you're never in the same situation. it just might not turn out the same for you.

Her argument is that when she has a gun pointed at her head she is still going to kill him first....in my book that is bravado. By the way, so is posting pictures of one self pointing guns...if you want some one to admire your gun, isn't there a better way of taking the picture?

I hope I am never in that situation as well, but then I generally don't make it a habit of walking in the bad areas of town by myself at night.

Luckily we never have to know. But whether her statement is false bravado or fact, she is safe now because of her actions - her controlled and thought out actions based on her available options. She was in a stressed situation, made a command decision and was able to walk away.
I still think she did well and it reflects poorly to criticize what other choices she might have had to make in hypothetical situations.

I took those pictures of myself in a mirror. And they were posted here for Walt in fun.

Your assumptions are, once again, hopelessly flawed.

First, she was doing a work of charity, helping those less fortunate, if I remember correctly. Highly admirable. I guess we can't "accuse" you of the same "bad judgement."

Second, she got turned around and lost... so you mean to tell me you're immune from getting lost?

Give me a fucking break.

True, though why can part of the conversation not be that taking a walk in the worst part of town by yourself at night is not the smartest of ideas?

The response of, because I think I should be able to is not overly valid.

Most accidents and incidents have a chain of events leading up to them. Realizing what that chain is, is one of the better ways to ensure you do not end up in the same incident.

I just don't buy the attitude of, I don't care, I'll do whatever I want cause I have a gun and I'll just kill him.

Didn't you say something about assumptions earlier in your post...pretty quick case of amnesia....The charities I work with tend to care about their volunteers and do not send them into bad neighbourhoods, at night by themselves....

Nope, though I tend not to get out in the bad parts of town to ask for directions. If I absolutely have to, I find a spot where I can stay very close to my car and in open view...not take a hike accross a parking lot to go into a bar.

I'll say it again, I am happy she is safe...personally I think she could have been smarter about her actions and possibly not put herself in a life threatening situation...see my post above.

ya know, it's awful easy for you to armchair quarterback her, even behind your statements of "i'm glad she's fine."

bottom line is, neither she NOR you NOR anyone else can account for every eventuality. This situation could have happened to her if she was in a BETTER part of town. Less likely, but still quite possible. How would you be criticising her then?

True, one is statistically more likely to get into trouble in a bad part of town, but should that stop people from doing works of charity? hell no... and good on ya for doing charity work, even if those above you only keep you in "safe" areas ;).

I wouldn't, but I would still try and look at the chain of events to see what can be learned from it.

Not at all, we just don't go alone.
