Just a short article, but I have even more respect for him.

I've been in love with Morgan Freeman for years for more reasons than I can count.

He's awesome.

Me too! He falls into the "Objectively, I shouldn't find this man sexy but, damn, he's sexy" category for me.

As for Black History Month, he probably has a point. It might have been needed at some point, but now? Not as much.

Y'know, Krisanne... I've never looked at him objectively until you wrote that. Not once. So I went and looked at a picture of him, and I said to myself, "Damn, she's right."

But I'll tell you something, if he crooked his finger at me, I'd be all over him. He makes my toes curl.

Lyle Lovett is like that for me, too. :)

I think we successfully hijacked the thread, Krisanne.

"Morgan Freeman says in an interview with “60 Minutes” that there is no "white history month," and says the only way to get rid of racism is to "stop talking about it."

How true.

I have to disagree. For many years, racism perpetuated while nobody talked about it; I'd go as far as to say because nobody talked about it. Racism only began the slow process of leeching its way out of the "that's just the way it is" mentality when it became part of the national conversation. I think the only way to get rid of racism (or religious intolerance, or homophobia, etc.) is to stop living it; and for those who don't live it, it means maintaining an environment in which it will not be tolerated. In my own life, to the extent that involved teaching the lesson to both my parents and my children, or setting an example for some of my neighbors, that requires some talking about it.

It's such a difficult problem. We give a lot of lip service to racism (and sexism and all the other -isms) that is really superficial, imho. And I've tried to teach my son not to make judgments about people based on appearance, whether that be color of skin, what car they come to school in, what clothes they wear and so on. However, he spent most of his days until he was 7 yrs old at Montessori school, where there were black kids, white kids, Guatemalan kids, Chinese kids....even a black and Chinese mixed kid....and they all got along as though they were all the same.

Now we've moved to a rural town in south Arkansas--my hometown--and my child is in the public schools here. Now he wonders why the black kids aren't as smart as the white kids and why the black kids are "so bad." This is where a superficial lesson on racism just isn't an adequate explanation. This is where only a real explanation of where the class divisions have come from will give him a way to sort through his now-prejudiced beliefs.

While I can understand how things became as they are, I still think that people who are not doing better by now are the only ones who can make the changes in their own lives. Black history month isn't going to pull anyone up by his/her bootstraps. Black History Month is for people who are already doing better, imho--for the kids in Montessori school and the like.

I think the talk about racism has made the field more equal for people who are willing to excel. It doesn't equalize anything for people who don't. That may be a whole different topic though....

To a certain extent, I agree.

Obviously, it would be impossible to NOT notice another person's skin color, but it would be great it we stopped mentioning it if unneeded. For instance, if I was describing sa friend I might be inclined to say "Tall, black, thin guy" because black is a descriptor of him that gives a clearer picture but if I was talking about some idiots who were being stupid at a club, there is really no reason to say, "a bunch of black dudes" when "a bunch of dudes" would suffice.

So I guess what I am saying is that if we lessening our use of racial differences in situations where is it not necessary, I agree. I do not think we need to get rid of the descriptors completely though.

I do agree about black history month though. The history of blacks in the US should be strongly integrated in the curriculum all year.

As well as women's history. March is "Women's History Month," and it's just as ridiculous a concept.

I don't think we can do away with "black" as a descriptor any more than than we can do away with "woman" as a descriptor.

What needs to go, however, are the negative messages associated with both words.

That's the real problem.
