NelKel 0 #3 January 3, 2006 I voted yes, I have been following it, and they have some highly trained men with 20 plus years trapped. I think they have found a place with oxygen to wait for rescue. The company has drilled severial holes trying to locate their exact position, but have been unsucessful thus far. They were equiped with between 1-5 hrs. of oxygen a piece. The rescue crews have been unsucessful at locating them so far. Good luck to the men and their familys._________________________________________ Someone dies, someone says how stupid, someone says it was avoidable, someone says how to avoid it, someone calls them an idiot, someone proposes rule chan
BillyVance 34 #4 January 3, 2006 It's definitely a very very difficult situation, being that the trapped miners are something like a mile deep and a mile away from the shaft... Remster 30 #6 January 3, 2006 QuoteThey were equiped with between 1-5 hrs. of oxygen a piece I'm not sure where you got that, but its pretty rare to go underground with O2, unless you are going in as a rescuer. There usually is some O2 in tanks located in lunchrooms or resuce rooms, but you have to get to those. The only typical form of breathing aparatus miners carry are Self Rescuers that extract the CO when breathing through it. It doenst create O2 tho, nor is it a pleasant experience to have you lips and throat burned by the exotermic reaction.Remster

peacefuljeffrey 0 #8 January 4, 2006 Quotei hope for the best, but things look grim. what a horrible way to go, i only imagine drowning would be worse... or maybe burning to death. Drowning doesn't seem like it would be that bad, actually. I've come close two or three times while kayaking. I actually found myself thinking, "Ah, well, maybe this is the time I don't make it up for air. Well, it's possible that someone'll drag me onto shore and resuscitate me..." Yep, all sorts of thoughts were going through my head while I was trying to hold my breath -- more and clearer than you'd expect would happen in a short period of time like that. I'd rather drown, I think, than run out of food or air or water, or freeze to death. I'm not answering the poll. I think it's in questionable taste. I hope they come back safe. -Jeffrey-Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... Hard line, hard line after hard line!"

Michele 1 #10 January 4, 2006 One confirmed body; still unknown about the others. Rest in peace. What a horrid thing. Apparently, the mining company had many safety violations (some reports have it more than 200) in 2005... That was a direct response to someone offering a personal view that drowning would be a bad way to die. And I offered my personal view that I thought it would not be that bad. It had nothing to do with "taste" because I was not talking about how/whether a bunch of innocent mine workers might die. WTF is your problem? Quoteand just incase you didnt realize, drowning, is running out of air , which is in response to this QuoteI'd rather drown, I think, than run out of food or air or water, or freeze to death. You're so hot to try to call me out that you don't mind looking foolish? Drowning is taking water or fluid into the lungs. It's not about running out of air. You could have a whole scuba tank on at the ready and then take the mouthpiece out and suck in water and you'd drown. You can run out of breathable air in an enclosed space. Is that the same as drowning? Why don't you lose this petty hard-on you have against me? WTF, did I insult your honor or something? Ohhh, that's right, it was about RELIGION, wasn't it? I insulted your RELIGION, and now you bear a grudge against me, to the point where you come out of the woodwork to try to make me look like I'm wrong about random facts. More proof, perhaps, that religious people cannot abide anyone else's views? If you express a different one, you incur the wrath of a religious person. kallend 2,106 #20 January 4, 2006 I once spent a day down a deep coal mine. That was one day too many. At the best of times it's awful and dangerous. Those among you who are anti-union need to recall that the mine safety rules we have now are nearly all the result of union pressure rather than altruism by mine owners, and safety violations by mining companies are still frequent.... Muenkel 0 #24 January 4, 2006 It is true that one body has been found so far. The miners are trapped between 13000 and 15000 feet into the mountain. That's 2-3 miles. Also, the carbon monoxide levels have been extremely high. It does look grim. My prayers are with the men and their loved ones.
