Is Gibraltar British or Spanish?

Recommended Posts

There it goes....;)

Gibraltar has remained in British Hands since 1704 after it was taken away from the Spanish. In 1713 the treaty of Utrecht, signed by the British and the Spanish, ceded the territory permanently to the British Crown. That treaty was forced upon the Spanish recovering from a long war.
The Spanish government wants it back, the British don't want to do it and the people from Gibraltar mostly wants to stay in the UK, other part prefers to be Spanish.

Now, is it OK for a country of the EU to keep a colony in a another EU fellow country and allied?

Is Texas actually Mexican?

Lots of international borders are the result of long ago wars and treaties. How many do you want to renegotiate?

Well, just a remainder that Gibraltar is in Spanish soil...think about that. The people from Gibraltar look in all the aspects Spanish, they have really deep andalusian Spanish accent and their surnames are mostly as Spanish as Smith is English. I repeat the question, Spain is a fellow member of the EU and a ally...is it OK to keep a COLONY in an ally's soil?
Colonies are from he days of the slavery.

For good or bad Gib is British, The only time Spain takes any notice of Gibraltar is when the home political front is quiet,
an the politicians feel the need to open thier fat mouths. (or when the British navy tows another broken nuclear sub to the ship yards)

What Spain should remember is that if they want anyone to take them seriously about Gibraltar they should start the ball rolling
by giving back the territories they have in Morroco. (Ceuta and Melilla)

It's quite true that sometimes it goes pretty quiet and then something happens and everybody starts talking about it. That it's normal in all societies anyway, things tend to calm down and then for whatever reason fires up again.

About Ceuta y Melilla, they are cities founded and built by Spain, not conquered. It happened much before Morocco existed, that's is the argument used by the Spanish government to refuse to the Moroccan claim over those two cities. All the territories held by Spain in North Africa were returned to the legitimate owners in the early 70's. It's a shame that it toke that long anyway.

Well, what does the law say? There ought to be something that would provide for how to handle such a "dispute".

It sounds like bitterness on the part of the Spanish, to me.

If you want to revisit history, why not go back centuries to when all the territory in Europe was changing hands when the Gauls, the Saxons, the Moors, the whoevers, were raping, pillaging and conquering?

I mean, at what frozen point in time were all the properties in the hands they were "supposed" to be in?

Territory has gone back and forth. Not every treaty ever signed was signed when the signators were in the best of positions. TFB. (Too Fuckin' Bad.) That's the way wars and treaties go!

If someone wants back land that it lost after a war, it needs to go to war for it, or OFFER A FAIR PRICE.

Ex-fuckin'-actly. :|

Everyone wants to be a revisionist.

The same reason that any territory in Europe ever changed hands hundreds of years ago is the same reason that settlers in America took land by force from the "Indians" here. But I don't hear anyone arguing for the native Frenchians to be given back territory that might now be Germany because some tribes in the 9th century or something conquered the Frenchians who were living there...

But we Americans sure as hell catch shit for what "we" (you mean my Polish and Russian ancestors who were 100+ years from coming to the U.S.?) did to the Indians... :S

Best to ask the Gribraltarians...... If I remember correctly, the last time they were asked they did NOT want to be Spanish.

But for me as a kid (we lived there for a while, when dad was in the RAF) it was great - Warm and foriegn, yet with familiar Englishness..... I went back a few years ago and it's actually a bit if a shite hole.

Hey, i am here the only spaniard and i am not bitter. You brits can keep Gibraltar all you want as long as you don´t keep breaking nuclear submariness and repair them there. I mean, how hard can it be to drive a sub from A to B without bang it in every rock the mediterranean sea has.

Now that we are at it, you guys can keep Cataluña and Basque country as well, the only condition is that you take the people living there as well. They are a royal pain in the ass and talk weird. :o

Scared me for a minute there. Thought you were going to say the MN/WI border - in which case my home and our DZ would be in the hands of an Indian Tribe. All those flashing lights, busloads of gamblers from the outer ring suburbs, and washed up rock acts would put me over the edge. But then again, think of all the tandem traffic to support the Otter. I can see the headline now:

"Rock Star Rod Stewart, 72, Makes Tandem Skydive Into Casino Rock Concert."

In a related story, 783 octogenarians were admitted to the Baldwin Area Hospital with mild to severe injuries when the plane performing the lift to altitude was seen to "buzz" the crowd at an altitude of only 3 feet. The pilot, on learning of the injuries, was heard to mutter "Oh shit, I forgot they can't crouch."
