crozby 0 #51 January 25, 2006 QuoteSo you're against Big Brother in one sense... and for Big Brother in another sense. Yes, Jeffrey, that is correct. I am for the use of CCTV on trains and buses because, contrary to what you say, their presence not only deters crime but is useful evidence when crime does occur. (Recall how the London bombers were identified and traced using the CCTV cameras dotted around the city.) I am against the collection of genetic information because it can too easily be abused or fall into the wrong hands. Why do you find the juxtaposition of those two opinions so crazy. jenfly00 0 #52 January 25, 2006 QuoteCCTV.. well, I think your trying to build some sort of argument of a big brother state when their isnt really anything to worry about. THe DNA maybe, but the other things. Get a life. If you dont like it, no doubt its coming your way soon too. I suggest you drag your ass up to the mountains, arm yourself to the teeth, put a tin foil hat on and live life as a reclusive paranoid loser According to an article in USA Today, Britain has 2.5 million cameras watching it's citizens, with more proposed. This doesn't smell just a little bit like a big brother state??----------------------- "O brave new world that has such people in it".
Dolph 0 #53 January 25, 2006 Scoop I realize all these contraptions make your job a hell of a lot easier. My idea of freedom however includes not having the state track my every movement. If that makes your job harder, so be it. The Indians make my job harder, but you don't see us nuking them. It has been proven, time after time, that the government (or various lackeys at low levels) do have an interest in individuals "subjects". Historically, states have a record of treating subjects rather poorly. Add to that that information wants to be free. If you store it, people are going to use it. Some of those people weren't originally intended to use it or may be using it illegally, but they're using it nevertheless. I may have to arm myself to the teeth and flee to the hills with likeminded people. We'll see. The publics general acceptance of surveillance in every aspect of life is, to me, appalling. So far it's a democracy, so I vote. When that option is exhausted, perhaps me and Jeff will go plonk some cans in the Montana mountains.
Scoop 0 #54 January 25, 2006 Quote According to an article in USA Today, Britain has 2.5 million cameras watching it's citizens, with more proposed. This doesn't smell just a little bit like a big brother state?? No because someone doesnt sit with a clipboard monitoring whos going where. They are only used to help public safety and for evidential purposes as stated. We get lots of calls from CCTV operators asking our attendance somewhere. Usually its because it looks as though a fight is about to occur or because the guy they are monitoring has just stolen something or assaulted someone. I dont know if youve ever been into a CCTV office, our town has an underground bunker with walls of screens. It is the most boring place you've ever been. They couldnt give a shit if your wearing the same shirt you wore yesterday or that the woman your with isn't your wife. They dont notice things like that. They are very good, however, at spotting the guy whos acting suspiciously around your car or identifying who that unknown offender was who headbutted you for no reason. If I had a choice, I'd rather live in a town with CCTV than one without
 JohnRich 4 #55 January 25, 2006 QuoteYou haven't listened to FOX lately, have you? Many conservatives are indeed supporting the loss of individual liberties, primarily because they want to be seen as supporting Bush and being 'tough on terra.' It's going to be quite humorous in the future when a Democrat is elected President once again, and he has to consider revoking all of these things that the Dems now complain so loudly about. They'll either have to hamstring their own war on terrorism, or be hypocrites for continuing the policies which they formerly criticized. The Dems are painting themselves into a corner.
