tbrown 26 #1 February 12, 2006 So Michelle Kwan FINALLY stepped down, about fuckin' time. She shouldn't have been on the Olympic team in the first place. Oh my, what's that ? She pulled a muscle ? Oh dear, we aren't going to let this interfere with her coronation this time, are we ? Last time out she got her ass beat by a teenage girl who simply blew everyone's mind with a stunning performance. But this year, because she "was likely to win gold", the losers on the US Olympic Committee let her on the team without even competeing, and kept a girl who worked hard to win 3rd place off the team. The girl, Emily Hughes, happens to be the little sister of Sarah Hughes, who beat Kwan's ass in the '02 Olympics. Now Emily is trying to catch a plane out of New York to get to Turin in time to compete. Good luck kid, the weather's not being much help. Of course if they'd told the Bitch Queen she actually had to EARN a place on the team by COMPETING, maybe Emily Hughes wouldn't be stuck at JFK in a blizzard today. Or maybe they should just wheel Kwan out on the ice in a wheel chair and give her the fucking gold medal she feels so entitled to.... Your humble servant.....Professor Gravity ! Nightingale 0 #2 February 12, 2006 Funny... when I met Michelle, I thought she was very sweet. Of course the olympic committee is going to pick the skaters they think will win. If they thought michelle was better than emily, that's their decision. I think it sucks for emily, and I really hope she gets out there in time, but don't blame Michelle for a decision made by the committee.

She could have stayed and "fought it out" but instead she stepped down in time to allow Emily (who is a great skater, but not at Kwan's level; just isn't...) to make it to Torino, and thus have a three person team. BTW, you *do* realize that the third spot on the Olympic team was earned by Kwan's wins this last year, including Worlds, right? So...without her, there wouldn't even have been a spot for Emily. The two top competitors will be Slutskya and Cohen. Kwan wasn't expected to be in the top three, but likely would've made the top 5. They ranked her higher than Emily because Kwan is, frankly, more seasoned, more capable of handling the emotions that come with that level of competition, and because while Emily did indeed take 3rd in Nationals, she has never won an international competition...so the USIOC did what they thought was in the best interests of the country...and so did Kwan when she withdrew. With the new scoring system, it will be exceedingly interesting to see who will come out on top...as it stands, the US Figure Skating contingent has already made Olympic history, by landing the first throw triple axel in the Pairs short program Saturday night...and it was a glorious jump. It has landed the pair in 6th place going into the long program, but I don't expect them to stay there; they have some massive competition from the field, and simply don't have the class and elegance that some of the other teams have. Kwan pulled out with grace, style, and consideration...Emily will have my support and best wishes, as well. (Why yes, I follow figure skating; I used to compete in it, as well, many years ago). The Olympic committee chose to put her on the team (due to her past record) knocking the silver medalist down to alternate. The spot was rightfully hers, and she did the right thing in giving it up. She's ending her "amateur" career with the same grace and class that she's competed with all along. A few olympics back, there was a male US skater who made the team under similar circumstances and didn't give up his slot even though he wasn't in any shape to compete. I can't even remember his name, but I do remember them showing his alternate in the audience while he flailed his way through his program. Maybe is Kwan had done that she would have earned a fraction of the venom in the original post. With that in mind they pass judgement on this person from the short few seconds of information the television chooses to show them. So you are saying you have NEVER passed judgement on someone you have only seen on TV or maybe on the internet? NWFlyer 2 #15 February 13, 2006 QuoteDid she kick you square in the nuts with her toepick? Toepick! (Name that movie! ) This article does a nice job summing up the issues and why she's not a "bitch queen" or a "cunt." http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/winter06/figure/columns/story?id=2328132&campaign=rss&source=ESPNHeadlines"There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. tigra 0 #19 February 13, 2006 Warped has issues with women.......... Love the toepick comment! I think most people agree that she a) deserved the slot and b) did the right thing in giving it up when she did, after her FIRST practice session. Plenty of time for Emily Hughes to get there, blizzard or no. And its not like she hasn't been training.

NWFlyer 2 #21 February 13, 2006 That movie is my ultimate guilty pleasure. I cannot turn it off when it comes on TV. Why I don't already own it on DVD, I'm not sure ...."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. jdhill 0 #22 February 13, 2006 Try decaf next time... I agree that she should not have been there in the first place, but Emily will probably have a full week on the ground before the competition, and its better that MK pulled out when she did than a week from now...
