peacefuljeffrey 0 #1 February 21, 2006 I just noticed that there's gonna be a gay day boogie, and it made me wonder why such a thing is even necessary. I have no problem with gay people. I know some and I am friends with some. I do believe it's how a person is made, not a choice, although I do think it's a natural aberration in terms of the design of a human to be a reproducing creature and all... But we don't choose to be any given way, we just get born that way. But that does not have any bearing on why some people feel that they can't just be a "skydiver" or a "biker" or a "plain-ol'-whatever." I try to imagine what is to be gained by having a gay-specific skydiving day and I come up with nothin'. Are gays mistreated in skydiving? Is it directly because of people's knowledge that someone is gay? If so, that would need to be addressed, but people's sexuality is supposed to be something that just is, not something that is flaunted. When you come out to the DZ, do the people around you have some reason that they have to know you're gay? What's served by that? How do you feel about gay-specific skydive events, or women-specific ones, or "anything"specific ones? Apart from regular themed boogies like one with a country theme, or a holiday theme, I mean. This is by no means intended to be an anti-gay thread (though some will accuse me). I am not looking for gay-bashing replies (as I'm not a gay-basher and don't support it). I want to know if people really feel that stuff like this kind of boogie is justified, and more importantly -- why? - --Jeffrey "With tha thoughts of a militant mind... wmw999 2,445 #2 February 21, 2006 How come you didn't post this poll for Chicks Rock, or for any of the POPS boogies, or for the JFTC? billvon 2,991 #3 February 21, 2006 Same reason there's a chicks rock boogie, a holiday boogie, wingsuit boogies, freefly festivals, swoop meets and (occasionally) free jumps on your birthday. Cause boogies and free jumps are fun.

Given the significant number of military (current, reserve, past) members in the jumping ranks, and the general hostility there towards gays, I can certainly imagine a need, though not in my parts. I'd bet that this gay boogie would be perfectly happy to have you, just as Chicks Rock was happy to have me.
Dolph 0 #7 February 21, 2006 Minorities get together, hang out, have fun. Being a straight white male puts you in the majority. Any basic day at the DZ is a "straight-white-male" day. Having said that, I don't care much for segregated boogies, be it on sexual orientation, gender or discipline. Of course I'm a hypocrite so will gladly attend freefly oriented ones. If I was gay, a rainbow boogie would be cool. If I was a chick, Chicks Rock boogie would kick ass. If I was gay, a chick and a flatflyer, a flatfly rainbow chicks rock festival would be awesome. I'll try to organise a white-straight-male-freefly boogie some day. It's just that people keep beating me to it
beowulf 1 #8 February 21, 2006 There isn't a NEED for any type of boogie. People put these things together because the want to, not becuase they need to. If you want to put together your own Straight People boogie then go ahead knock yourself out.
rehmwa 2 #9 February 21, 2006 I'm thinking the DZ thought they could drum up some business by capitalizing on some local demographics. Maybe they have some locals that feel some need for personal support and the DZO is kissing up. Maybe the DZO is running for political office next year and wants to get some PC points in his bag. Who know or cares? It's their DZ, so they can do what they want. IMO? - If it makes money, then it was a good idea. If it doesn't, then it was a silly idea. "Having said that, I don't care much for segregated boogies, be it on sexual orientation, gender or discipline. " me too, I think it's divisive in concept. In application, it's not really that serious unless the members force that attitude - I wonder if anyone believes that a "Chicks"-based anything doesn't also attract tons of men??? ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants
Andy9o8 2 #10 February 21, 2006 I dunno. Perhaps they considered calling it "Happy Day", but that just didn't quite make the point. Real answer: same reason why there are gay bars - open fellowship and companionship in a comfortable environment.
