waltappel 1 #28 March 1, 2006 QuoteI don't think the change came about because of "a lot of bitter and angry women" but because of a lot of thoughtful women who had a vision of something better for their daughters. rl That's kind of the whole point. Bitter and angry crusading changes little. So do these BS xxxxxxx weeks or months or whatever. They change nothing. They are all show. Same goes for Black History Month, any variety of Gay Pride things, or any of the other crusades. Seems to me that people who come up with those things define themselves rather narrowly. If someone defines themselves primarily by one single element of their being, especially something over which they had no choice or control, then it seems to me they are stuck in a trap of their own making because every individual is far more than simply their gender or color or sexual orientation or any other single thing. They are a huge package of things. I'm more interested in whether someone is a good human being. If they are, then no special week is needed. I will appreciate them every day. wmw999 2,447 #29 March 1, 2006 QuoteSeems to me that people who come up with those things define themselves rather narrowly. Sometimes. But maybe it helps other people who define them narrowly also. I heard a discussion on the radio the other day about whether Condoleeza Rice should run for president. The issue was whether, as a woman, she could deal from a position of strength with the rest of the world. The number of people who said that no way a woman could handle it was astounding. And one of the chief reasons was "it hasn't been done before." When given examples of other countries with woman leaders, there were always answers: "Indira Gandhi, Benazir Bhutto, Corazon Aquino (etc)?" Ha, those are pipsqueak countries "Margaret Thatcher?" Argentina would never have attacked a man "Angela Merkel?" Not there long enough, but just you wait. Women are too soft, too malleable. So maybe some overt evidence with pointing that there are some hardass women who can deal in that arena is needed. Dunno. I wish it weren't. It used to be that blacks couldn't be quarterbacks. Until they were. And, well, even then there are always faults. The thing is that the faults exist in every quarterback/president/CEO/whatever. It's easy to point to the cause being their gender/color/whatever when that exists. When they're a whatever-is-in-power-in-the-arena, then the faults are simply a part of their performance, and aren't associated with a bigger box. So maybe what is needed is enough of a mass of non-dominant-folks so that faults (which are noticed more often) are associated with the individual, rather than with their gender, color, nationality, religion, or choice of partner. Wendy W.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. lawrocket 3 #39 March 1, 2006 QuoteSo this is women's week in our university, the weekly "newspaper" says how this is the time to celebrate all that women have contributed to the society. My question is why? Do we have a men's week where we talk about all the things that men have done? What's the point? Now, there, there. I'm sorry it upsets you that there is a week dedicated to women. I'm sorry that there is not a "Men's Week" at yoru school, so you can proudly rejoice. Maybe there should be a unified, "Boo hoo, I'm underappreciated" week, so that anybody with a gripe or grumble can be in on it. Think about the amount of time and energy that would save! You can have all groups, big or small, and any self-identifying separatist fighting over who is more pathetic. You can include yourself in it, too. You know, back when I was in college I didn't have the fucking time to deal with shit like this. There's so much better to do with your time than bitch about how you don't get yours. There's a simple thing you can do - don't participate. I wasn't fond of the Greek system. I didn't bitch about it. I just didn't rush. Problem solved! You don't like women's week? Don't participate. While others are participating to make themselves feel good (or, more likely, confirm that they feel bad) why not open a book and study? Then you can make them feel bad about racist/sexist tests that you did better on. Sure, you studied more for it, but that's a cop out answer as to why you would do better. RhondaLea 4 #43 March 1, 2006 QuoteQuote...Men also ran the world. Women made life comfortable for men and reared their children....The pendulum always swings--hard--before it comes back to center. God, I hope so, I'd really like to stay home, make the place comfortable, and raise my daughter. Not yet. I'd have liked it too. The fallout didn't only hit the male segment of the population. Some women ended up in (and continue to end up in) very difficult situations because of the feminist movement. But in the end, one hopes that when it all settles down, there will be a sharing of both responsibility and benefits in the home and at work. rlIf you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. lawrocket 3 #45 March 1, 2006 QuoteBut in the end, one hopes that when it all settles down, there will be a sharing of both responsibility and benefits in the home and at work. Hence the reasoning for my "men are chickenshits" statement. Most men out there DON'T WANT to share in the responsibilities of the home. An example of my thinking is Chris Cowden. Cowden, people likely agree, is a great dad. He is doting on his son, and probably spends a lot more time with his son than most other men. He openly cherishes fatherhood. He openly cherishes his wife. He openly relishes in the responsibilities of the home. Hence, he is a great dad. Now, what does that say about the standard of fatherhood? I'll bet if you asked him, he'd say, "Why the hell am I a great dad? Because I love my son? Because I want to be a huge part of his life and development? Jeez, there is so much more I could be doing?! Hell, I stayed late at work a couple of times last week, and I shouldn't have done that." Mark my words, he's shocked that he is so highly regarded for doing what he loves to do - what he wants to do - what a force within him drives him to do. Be a daddy. Because he knows how much better of a daddy he can be, and how much better he will be. You know, Cowden should be the fucking STANDARD of what it means to be a father. Cowden should be center mass of fathers out there. But he is not. He's one of the best, and he's considered one of the best merely because he does what every father should be doing. This means that there is a very, very large number of fathers out there who aren't doing it. Honestly, I'm fed up with most fucking guys. The ones who "lose their jobs" three days before a child support hearing. "I lost my job, judge, and I don't have the money." That's a full ten percent, right there. The ones who go through a child custody battle not for the best interests of the child, but to make it hell on that bitch. Or, to simply get themselves more time to save on child support. No, not because it might be in the child's best interests to be with mom most of the time. The ones that were absentee and now want 50/50 custody. The ones who paid nothing in three months for child support while they were out golfing and drinking with the guys. The ones who are out on beer call while the wives are at home taking care of REAL responsibilities. I've had my moments, too. My wife is a rock, and I thank her for it daily. This also demonstrates the rule - it's the women who usually step up to the plate. They're the ones with the resourcefullness to do what they can for the child, even when the dad does jack and shit. The women/mothers usually aren't the ones who take time off from being a parent, because they can't. Sure, there are exceptions (big ones), but in my line of work, this is the vast generality of what I have found. Cowden stepped up to the plate. He wanted to. Women step up to the plate - most want to. But when someone HAS to step up to the plate, it's usually the woman that does it. Not the man. The guys doesn't HAVE to. A court will make him step up to the plate financially, but not in any way that would make him what a father should be. And the woman steps up, sucks it up and drives on because she HAS to. Men know this, and they'll pass the buck to a woman since the woman is where the buck stops. Cowden is a shining star of a father, and he has my utmost respect. There are others on here who are great, and go through hell for their kids. Still, many go through hell WITH their kids instead of keeping them out of it,thus putting their kids through hell. Wouldn't it be nice if, instead of being in the 95th percentile of dads, Chris Cowden was in the 60th percentile? I'll tell you, it ain't gonna happen. Rhonda, I've concluded that what you're hoping for is a pipe dream. Listen to Tom Leykis, who, according to my experience and line of work, is not satire. Ask how many women out there can't watch the Simpsons because Homer reminds them too much of their husbands. And to all you men out there, look forward to the future and ask whether you will say to yourself, "I wish I had spent more time with my kids." Will "The Cats in the Cradle" be a song that causes you to lament? And ask yourselves, "What can I do to be a better father and husband." Most all fathers out there are adequate - because the mother is carrying the load. Plenty of fathers are not adequate and don't face up to responsibility. Check out statistics on single parent homes and find out how many of those are women. I do a lot of family law. I kindly request that you all put my ass outta business. Edited to add: flame away, people. I've been wanting to say this for a long time, and the "keeper" thread was the drop of water that burst the dam. My wife is hotter than your wife.
