QuoteI'm not a huge film critic.. I usually enjoy a movie or I don't. Its supposed to be entertainment right?
Anyway, all Brokeback Mountain did was push the envelope in its arena and create hype. This Texas girl did not buy Heath Ledger as a cowboy. I agree that it didn't deserve to win any Oscars. My favorite film of the year was Walk the Line.
And there it is. Most of us decide for ourselves what we like, without regard to awards. I bought Walk the Line on DVD last week, and sold it the next day to a friend for $10 because I thought it was boring and I knew I wouldn't watch it again. On the other hand I called "Crash" one of my favorite movies of the year here, in mid December, well before any of these awards were being handed out. What can I say, sometimes the critics get it right.

No one is going to view a horror movie in serious contention because it fails on many of the levels that the Oscars pay attention to.
But I think I'm still pissed 8mm never won a damn thing.
TV's got them images, TV's got them all, nothing's shocking.

I felt like for everything it did right (turning its eye on the industry, money, class, power, etc) there were two things it did wrong. While Joaquim Phoenix was great I really did feel that Cage was miscast and that it went on to exploit the exploited. In the end though, I was impressed by what it set out to do. Those underground tape exchange scenes are still embedded in my brain.
Too much hero stuff and not enough Odyssey, ya know? Check out Paul Schrader's Hardcore 1979, which was obviously a major inspiration for 8MM. This film was a homage to Ford's The Searchers. Thematically, it still holds up and that ending....fugheddabouttit!
QuoteI'm guessing it isn't Cronenberg's Crash but something I missed.
Paul Haggis ain't no Cronenberg. Speaking of, this poster thought that Cronenberg's A History Of Violence was the best film of the year by FAR.
I with ya on that one, sista!!

Great acting, great story!

The directors commentary on the DVD is pretty informative also.

QuoteI don't know when the cut off was but for me it was "RENT".
"Rent" was awesome, I have been listening to the soundtrack at work on my headphones. It should have won an award. I don't know how much money it made as a movie but its been extremely succesful on Broadway and around the world.
Who do you think you are barging in on me and my guitar, Little girl hey, the door is that way, You better go you know the fire is out anyway, take your powder, take your candle, your sweet whisper I just can't handle, go take your hair in the moonlight, your brown eyes, good bye good night...
