11% of Americans have passports!!!!!

Recommended Posts

I'd have one except I'm a bit behind in child support. Was gonna go travel to a job (ME) to make the money to pay it off. BUT NO. I'm a prisoner in my own country[:/]

Yes, because the new patriotism dictates that you can't disagree with or criticize anything American -- especially if you're American.
Considering it bothers you that others exercise their right to free speech, perhaps it's you who should consider Saudi Arabia or Iran.[email]

Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.

Size is important when you look at geography. It is easier to travel in Europe because the countries are smaller. All of Europe takes up 8% of the world's land mass. America takes up 16%. If I travelled as much in Europe as I have in the US, I'd have seen every country there. The US is so big that there's a lot of cultural diversity within our country. There's an amazing difference between New York City and Key West. About the only things they have in common is that most people speak English and the area is considered to be part of the United States. They differ vastly in climate, geography, culture, architecture, food, slang, accent, clothing and lifestyle.

It's not that Americans don't want to travel. Most do. It's just that there's so much to explore within our own borders, and it's cheaper and more convenient to travel here instead of flying across an ocean.

To put things in perspective a bit, when I flew from Los Angeles to New Orleans, the distance was about 1800 miles. The distance between London and Venice is about half that, only 919 miles, and Barcelona to Prague is only 1044.

Pretty much all you said about the US applies equally to Australia. I bet far more than 11% of Australians have passports. (They all seemed to be in London last time I was there).

AFAIK the estimate is that about 50% of Australians have a passport. Also saw a stats that about 18 % of the population travelled abroad within a calendar year.

BTW - it takes about 6 hours to fly South to North and 4.5 hours to go East to West within Australia.

I won't get fully into a complex issue, but I'll point out that while Bush and his people are bloodthirsty hegemonic aggressors, they are NOT the whole of the american nation.

I will admit they're doing a good job of converting the failed bullies among us though.

what is the geological diversity like for Australia, for places that are accessible by air?

I know you have the beach stretches, the outback plains, some large sections of wine country, and skiing somewhere. But no sense of quantity/quality.

Well, just look here: http://www.australia.com
