"SLUT"

Why do you find the word archaic? Because enlightened persons with higher education ought to be reluctant to use it, given development in society since the late 60's, early 70's?

Two fold reason:

1. Who am I really to judge who is or isn't a "slut"? Even here in an "open-minded" forum we can't come to a consensus. If I can't reasonably define the word, does it have meaning?

2. The social implications or lack of effect that the word has. Some people look at the word as a negavative connontation, a break of honor.... but then others claim that it can be used common place.

Archiac: having the characteristics of the language of the past and surviving chiefly in specialized uses. Yup.

Good points. I think I need to expand on my earlier post a bit.

Some dictionaries have it as "sexually promiscuous, one who commits adultery".

In this sense, it is far from an archaic word. As far as special cases - the argument can be made about a great deal of words. The widespread use of the word also can be seen as an indicator of it being current.

When I use it, it is usually to describe someone sexually promiscuous who's screwing someone behind the back of their partner. I don't feel even a tinge of bad conscience for doing so, but I usually have the decency (if you can call it that) to say it to the individual in questions face, rather than behind their back.

The test for words I use, as far as whether they're accepted or not; would you use it in conversation with an important client or customer?

Badge of honour or isignificant in the eyes of some nonwithstanding, I doubt I'd be looked upon favourably if I made use of it.

As far as "hwo are you to judge?" - who else can judge for you? :P

Wouldn't there have to be an age/sex partner loading?

But what type of "experience" would be "bad"? Age/number loading under 5? under 1?
I would guess that you have to start with a higher loading and work down to a lower ratio. (ie 20year old/4 partners = 5.... 35 year old/15 = 2.33 ... 50 year old/ 50 = 1. Or is it more realistic to see the loading increase 20/4=5; 35/6=5.8; 40/6=6.6; 50/6=8.3; 65/7=9.2)

Considering there is a book on the shelf at Barnes & noble titled "The Ethical Slut", and that you yourself have used the term "sport fuck" in reference to some past adventures, I see no problem with anyone being a slut per se, although the label can be damaging.

I was just trying to get a more "up-to-date" view on the word.
i still think that the term is outdated and potentionally damaging. AND if he has that little respect for her that he would call her that, then he shouldn't be sleeping with her.

And Note: I did not say that I participated in the "sport fuck" . . . If you read that post a bit more carefully, you'll find that the guys who wanted that ran away fast. :P

So if a woman for arguments sake (could equally be a man) has sex once in their lives but doesn't use contraception of any kind (although pregnancy is not a desired outcome) then by your definition she would be a slut.

If the sex takes place outside the confines of a committed relationship, and you don't want a child, but do nothing further to prevent having a child, that's irresponsible. I wouldn't call her a slut. I say she was being irresponsible. I'm not going to be derogatory towards someone for making a decision, but I will encourage them to make good decisions. Do you see the difference here?

Calling someone a slut doesn't do anyone any good. It just makes you feel more self-righteous.

Besides, it's not about how much you have sex. It's about the circumstantial factors and the contextual situation in which someone has sex that dictates whether or not it's irresponsible. I don't care if she has sex 1 time or 100 times. But if she has sex 100 times without contraception and doesn't want a kid, she is making MORE irresponsible decisions. And don't think I forgot about the guy's fault in the decision. He's the one that put it in her.

So... No. She would not, by my defition, be a slut. Because a slut is a derogatory and insulting term that people use against others to feel better about themselves.

Make sense?

It's beginning to look like "slut" is any female (generally) who is significantly more promiscuous than the speaker approves of.

Hey, I can resonate with that. But you just invalidated 90% of the posts on SC......

That's it, I'm not buying any food off your menu.

Co-worker and I were just discussing this thread topic. He brought up this situation where his wife's best friend's boyfriend has a son who is 21. Thing is, the 21 year old is fucking a 16 year old girl. The other thing is, she's pregnant. The other other thing is, it's not his.

Even in this situation, I wouldn't say she's a slut.
I'd say she's fucking stupid. But she's probably fucking Steve, Chris, Jim, David, etc. as well. :D

I just find it to be unfair that when a man sleeps around he's called a player which is often looked at in more of a positive manner for most, and when a woman sleeps around she's a filthy whore. In either case i think it either comes down to a lack of self respect or serious enthusiasm.

Who are we to judge? I find 'serial monogamy' (awesome term for it) to be much more damaging because it's rooted in lies. It's one thing to fuck everyone, but something entirely different to FUCK WITH everyone.

that's just my $.02

My thoughts is that #1 is most "correct." #2 is just right out ("American women make terrible wives"?! wtf?! That invalidates the whole defination there) #3 sounds most "fun"

Hope that helps

Karen

#2 was a mainstay on one of the other boards I frequented.

Great troll material. That and "Post in this thread if you are married and hate your life."
