WASHINGTON - Less than a week after delivering a State of the Union address in which he asserted that the "road to victory" is the one that brings our troops home, President Bush recommended eliminating the Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) program, which includes funding for Protection and Advocacy for Individuals with Traumatic Brain Injury (PATBI) - programs essential to so many troops returning with disabilities acquired in combat.

"At a time when traumatic brain injuries account for a higher proportion of casualties than in other wars, it is unconscionable that the President is recommending absolutely no funding for a program so essential to this population," said Curt Decker, executive director of the National Disability Rights Network (NDRN).

That was at the Naval Medical Center. For two years now Jason has been treated at the Palo Alto VA Hospital — one of four specialized centers for rehabilitation of the huge numbers of brain injured troops. The program uses intense, individualized physical and mental rehabilitation.

Dr. Harriet Zeiner is a clinical neuropsychologist in the hospital’s polytrauma unit.

“Every hour of the day something is done,” Zeiner says, “And we're very careful to keep within the envelope of what someone is capable of doing and pushing it just a little.”

Hm that sucks big time. The government is morally obliged to take care of the ones who risk their lives to carry out the governments will. What will the money saved be used on?

Perhaps faith based charity organisations can pick up the bill, or at least part of it? Mr. Bush has after all made it clear that that is how he prefers such matters to be dealt with.

The original post was a bit misleading. The budget cut is to the Administration on Developmental Disabilities, an organization within the U.S. Dept. of Health & Human Services. There is nothing to suggest that returning troops won't get full care at Bethesda or subsequent care through the VA. This just cuts a contribution to a completely non-military, non-profit advocacy group that disabled veterans could have theoretically gone to for support.

Not at all.. its part of their program...

Go back to the link you posted (quoted below) and see what department the quoted part falls under (and note there are no cuts this year to the Department of Veterans Affairs):

The Cuts to the VA are CERTAINLY real. And have been for a few years now.

I absolutely agree there have been unconscionable cuts to the VA for a few years now. This just isn't one of them.

So.. the VA budget gets cut....and cant provide the services necessary to help a hell of a lot of injured vets with brain damage....knowing the level of WHO the VA hires....

On the Flip side.. NOW the Administration cuts the funding to the group who is ACTUALLY doing research into the damage to the brain. These are the people who will eventually have to take care of the vets who the VA will not help...

Similar to the vets that were denied to have any form of damage by the VA from agent Orange..

Similar to the vets who came back from the Gulf in 1991 with mysterious diseases that the VA said did not exist... yet private sector research found various causal factors..

By cutting the budget in this area... it shows a lack of genuine desire to help our own people.

Bush's first VA budget cuts were announced the same day he gave a speech at Walter Reed extolling the virtues of wounded vets and telling them that they would be taken care of.

What gave you that impression (that this funding goes toward research)? It's Protection and Advocacy funding, you know...help them through the SSI or disability bureacracy, ensure they're not discriminated against in housing or employment, stuff like that. I'd be curious to find out what percentage of users are vets. I'd bet very few, if any.

If you'd like to know how the PATBI works in Washington State (the funding being cut trickles down to the states), start here.

I guess all the Republican Pork Barrel is FAR mor important..
Check out the pet projects in the 10's of millions of dollars... of the Republican Committe heads of Appropriations.. Defense etc.

http://www.cagw.org/site/PageServer?pagename=reports_pigbook2006

I especially LOVE this list

The 2006 Congressional Pig Book is the latest installment of Citizens Against Government Waste’s (CAGW) 16-year exposé of pork-barrel spending. This year’s list includes: $13,500,000 for the International Fund for Ireland, which helped finance the World Toilet Summit; $6,435,000 for wood utilization research; $1,000,000 for the Waterfree Urinal Conservation Initiative; and $500,000 for the Sparta Teapot Museum in Sparta, N.C.

Ireland's economy is flying, what is this money for?

Congressional Fact-Finding Tours!!?[:/] Especially if they stay overnight at The Chicago Fairmont. Apparently, if you book their $300K overnight B&B package, you get flown into Chicago in a private jet, taken to the hotel in a Rolls-Royce or Bentley Limosine, and next morning you drive away in the limo... Which you get to keep (along with the towels)!

Wrong again Cupcake.... but dont let that hatred blind you to the real culprits here.....

Lookie who runs the committee...Senate Foreign Operations Appropriations Subcommittee where this one emanates from.

http://mcconnell.senate.gov/gallery.cfm

OOOPS an R from Kentucky..WOW>. look at that bubble burst above your head.

State, Foreign Operations

The members are as follows:
Senator Mitch McConnell (Chairman) (KY)
Senator Arlen Specter (PA)
Senator Judd Gregg (NH)
Senator Richard Shelby (AL)
Senator Robert Bennett (UT)
Senator Christopher Bond (MO)
Senator Mike DeWine (OH)
Senator Sam Brownback (KS)
Senator Patrick Leahy (Ranking Member) (VT)
Senator Daniel Inouye (HI)
Senator Tom Harkin (IA)

When was the last time governmental shrank over the previous eight years?

Probably not in my lifetime! If it's ever happened, I'd guess pre-FDR. Governments are parasitic, they feed off of us and just keep growing. I'd like to see 8 years of a Libertarian government.

As someone who is the recipient of that care (currently at Walter Reed), I can tell you that no expense has been spared in the treatment of my injuries, and rehabilitation.

If I were being billed (from time of injury to now), the tab would easily be in the millions.

I see a lot of injured vets every day. I've not heard anyone mention that they felt they were being short-changed in their care or the administration of that care while they've been here.

To Amazon: Your link does not show any outline to the budgets of either the VA or DOD. Those are the departments that oversee the care of active duty servicemen and vets. Your "example" is a mere $9M within the Dept of Health and Human Services (whose budget is bigger than DOD btw).
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!
