WHERE do these people come from?

Recommended Posts

I was reading an article about the Jon Benet suspect, and the whole sort of "sub culture" of child pageants, and how they could be seen in some ways as "exploitative"...

The industry's response?

Note: From Newsweek

Or, as Jeb Nolan, general manager of a Denver-based children's talent agency, unsentimentally puts it, "As long as there are JonBenet Ramseys, there's going to be a need for a child to play JonBenet in the TV movie."

Am I too sensitive? Or is that just F%$#@D up? :S

I dont think I understand what he is saying...Id like to see the context.

I do know that dressing up your child like a hooker and having her 'perform' is like dangling a carrot for pedophiles..... It probably makes people with pedophilia more likely to act on their sick ass desires.

The Ramses are responsible for her death to a degree...

J, clearly you are not getting enough. Wear shorter skirts and get laid more.

I agree, J, that the fact that the Ramseys had their daughter doing pageants does not in and of itself make them partially responsible for her death. Obviously, since the guy they arrested hasn't been convicted yet, we may still find that the Ramseys were somehow involved in her death, but their decison to have her participate in pageants is unrelated.

Now... there's the whole separate issue of what participation in pageants could do to a young girl's sense of self-worth; does the emphasis that her parents and the whole pageant establishment are placing on looks from a very, very early age tend to warp her self-image to an unhealthy degree? Quite possible, and I don't think it's the healthiest thing for young girls to be pushed into...

Had she lived it might have led to a lifetime of therapy, but it didn't lead to her death.

We will have to agree to disagree. Providing temptation for sick fucks makes you partly responsible. When you dress a 4 year old like a grown woman you certainly make pedophiles more likely to act. And, yes, a girl that dresses like a tramp and goes to bars is probably more likely to be raped....

If I leave my wallet at a restaraunt and someone steals the money, I am partly responsible for providing temptation.

More likely, perhaps. Is it her fault she got raped? No. Should she have exercised better judgment to help keep herself safe? Perhaps, given the reality of "sick fucks" out there.

But in no way is it her fault that the sick fuck chose to rape her. In. No. Way.

So it's okay to rape a woman who wears a short skirt because she was "asking for it"?

We're talking RAPE here, not flirting.

OH that's SOO not streching the idea is it :D:D:D:D Not one person has even alluded to rape being OK, nice one Krissanne.:ph34r::ph34r:

Royd's response strongly implies that by dressing a certain way "she's asking for it", Squeak, and you know it.

Listen, I'm not one of those people who believes that women *should* be absolved of all responsibility for taking care of themselves in this world. I'm the first one to encourage women in this sport and everywhere to be careful what kind of attention they seek because they don't get to control what kind of attention they get back. That is the reality of the world we live in.

But sorry, Squeak, the implication is clear in Royd's post and in Duckwater's post that a woman who dresses provocatively is "asking" to be raped. THAT implication makes me wickedly uncomfortable.

They may not have gone so far as to say rape was okay, but they certainly implied that the woman was at fault.

OK now I"m playing devils advocate here, because I'm actually with you on this. (i.e. it's NOT at any time the womans FAULT)

However I dont think they were saying it is. My take on what they are saying is that the woman maybe increasing her chances when she dresses prvocatively.

Now I happen to disagree, but my point is that no one was OKing rape.

I'm surprised we've lasted this long.

And here, all TypicalFish wanted to do was talk about the weirdness of the pageant scene.

Check out "Tiara Girls" on MTV ... it drives home that point quite nicely.

(thing the greenies will let it stay in here since I brought it back on topic)? :D:D:D

No one should be responsible for a sicko's actions but himself, why should anyone change who they are because of the sicko's that are in this world somewhere. I should be able to say and do what I want without some jerk thinking it's an invitation. Unless it IS an invitation. And no one should touch anything that isn't their own. Period. Temptation is there everyday. Adults and normal people resist it. If the parents are guilty of anything it is of not being vigilant to the character of their own friends and leaving their young daughter alone with the wrong person. Innocence should be protected, not hidden and they aren't the same thing.

I hate to sound like a preacher but temptation should be avoided on both sides. Going out drinking with your friends wife should be OK, but temptation has caused many a marriage to fail. Why put yourself in that situation?

Michael Jackson has no excuse for being a pedophile, but any dumbass parent that puts their kid in that situation is responsible.

Nobody is immune from temptation.

I've been managing an auditorium for 20 years, these pageants are bread and butter for buildings like us.

This is big business. I mean big. If you want to really see it when it gets ugly check out the state and national pageants.

These are sold as franchises. Girls are groomed from a very young age to win these things.

If you think it's weird from the outside, you should see it backstage.

I have personally experienced "Best in Show" and "Waiting for Guffman". They are gentler, funnier representations of the real thing.

Exactly. It's along the lines of,

"What was she thinking jogging through Central Park?"

"What were you thinking parking your car there?"

"Why tempt a kleptomaniac by leaving your rig unattended?"

"Why tempt the nasty boss by showing up for work?"

"Why tempt Bubba in prison by taking that shower?"

I could go on...

My wife is hotter than your wife.
