Dolph 0 #6 September 11, 2006 I guess he's saying that 'V for Vendetta' is making a thinly veiled commentary on the political climate in the US and UK today and the possible future ramifications (even if taken to extremes). Decent movie. Too bad they cut away the full execution scene. Poor Guy was hung, quartered and drawn. Talk about brutal punishment. We're speaking of future possibilities. I doubt the masked V dude would have much of a chance against a Terminator though.
jshatzkin 0 #7 September 11, 2006 Great movie. Correct me if I am wrong, but I think this is from a comic written several years ago (before current administration). Maybe the theme is just a natural government theme that is coincidentally paralleling our state of affairs. It's really not that different than the theme in "1984".Jen

redlegphi 0 #9 September 11, 2006 It's based on the comic written by Alan Moore (available off Amazon.com and probably several other online stores). Interestingly, Alan Moore was reported to be somewhat pissed with the Cohen Brothers, since the comic he wrote was designed to tout how Britan could overcome a totalitarian state to get what he believed would be the ideal of anarchism. He felt that if the Cohen Brothers wanted to make a movie about the way things are going in the US, they should've made up their own story and not piggy-backed off of his. Still a great movie though. Yea, I thought it was a fantastic movie. The Big Brother theme is there which is why I thought the casting of John Hurt was probably not unintentional. I was thinking the same things that H'Juan was thinking, especially when they made references to "America's War" and how it had led to America's demise as a world power and, of course, the whole state influenced media thing. As for your "coincidentally paralleling our state affairs" comment, I agree completely and THAT should be the take home message. When Hollywood fantasy begins to resemble reality it's time to snap out of complacency and pay attention. Not to hijack the thread but "Syriana" made me have similar thoughts, a lot less fantasy involved with that one however.

They really try too hard and too simplistically, like a bunch of college sophomores. saw the film last night, mildly entertaining, wouldn't rent it again, I thought it was a pretty generic theme and done up ok, It really killed to see Natalie Portman's gorgeous hair cut off. A cross between 1984, violent rebellion, beauty and the beast, phantom of the opera, etc. Is it just me? or are the movies selections this year absolutely abysmal. ... idrankwhat 0 #15 September 12, 2006 Quote Is it just me? or are the movies selections this year absolutely abysmal. Agreed, not that great a year. But I'd say that the best was "World's Fastest Indian". Great movie that did a good job of depicting Burt Munro's story and character.
dorbie 0 #16 September 12, 2006 A fun movie but it really screwed with the history of the original gunpowder plot, which was underpinned by ambitions/fantasies of a Catholic sectarian coup. Interestingly the explosion would almost certainly have happened if one of the conspirators hadn't tried to warn a friend, but the subsequent uprising seems like a silly pipedream that was never going to materialize. Kinda invocative of the The Turner Diaries and the derranged notions of McVeigh types who think that a revolution can be precipitated by an action like the Oklahoma City bombing. The comments in some of the supplementary materials on the DVD in particular those of John Hurt were quite brainless and disgusting.
