Addressing his post is pointless, anyone who feels that way or agrees with what he said is not going to change their mind. I don't need to waste my breath. I am just amazed that people like that actually exist.

That's a mighty big horse you're on. How's the view?

This crawls underneath my skin so bad. I'm originally from the Philly area-- I can expect something like this from some place in the bible belt, but this is Philly we're talking about. A very cultured area where I like to believe more people think out of the box; but then again maybe not when I hear something like this.

These people who don't want this on their calendars-- do they complain about black history month? Chanukah? Christimas or Easter?? Of course not!! If this is too much to note on a calendar, then off comes every other months celebrations as well to be fair. There goes black history month, breast cancer awareness month, etc.

I'm going to take this off topic a little bit and rant because this issue really pisses me off. I'm not gay, or bi, but I have a good amount of friends who are. I think they deserve the same respect we do. I think I deserve to stand at my friends side and watch him/her get married and have simple freedoms that I have as a straight person. I think they deserve to have some sort of observance on a calendar just like every other diversified group does. Do you know why I think all of this is a major issue between people? Man's stupid religion and our current government. If two gay people can't get married then how come two black people can or two Jewish, German, pink skinned, green skinned can?? It sickens me how unjust everything is for them. Look at all the simple things we enjoy as straight people; the simple freedoms. We're talking about words on a friggen calendar here and we can't even give the gay community that. Well damn, the way this country has been going, (oh, let's say the past 5 years) I'm suprised we even let gay people vote!

I hate to make assumptions, but how much you want to bet that these peole who complained about this calendar are the most narrow minded, naive, church sheltered, lady or gentleman who knows nothing except for what they have been taught to believe. Guess what, we were taught to believe at one point that african americans where put on this earth to be our slaves. We've changed our views and actions as a society concerning their equality; we've come a long ways from opressing people as slaves. Why is it so different wtih the gay and lesbian community? I think it's a good start to do something as little as observing the culture on the calendar along with everybody elses. It's nothing bad that the school could open your children up to. Maybe these people should step out of the box and take a look to see that they're the ones teaching their children bad values. They're helping the next generation to be as biggoted and ignorant as they are.

I'm going to stop myself there even though I want to write a book on this. I've already gotten off topic enough. Sorry for the rant, but I just had a recent conversation with friends about this and figured I would spit it all out. I've thrown around a few assumptions, which is probably unfair and is not concrete for the argument, but felt opinionated today I guess. [:/]

I agree.... no matter what side you're on it's going to go with the idea that you're taking up one opinion and not looking at the other side.

Let's put it this way then.... maybe nobody is wrong, but doesn't everybody deserve a fair shot either way?

I just want everything equal for everybody. It's the best part of our country and hurts me to see when things aren't fair for all. [:/]

It seems that a fair number of people who talk about embracing diversity and tolerating others differences become quite intolerant of those with different ideologies, especially conservatives. Labels like ignorant, close-minded, redneck, moron and bible-thumper get tossed about fairly often.

In July, the Pew Research Center took a poll on gay marriage.

The results:

Oppose - 56%
Favor - 35%
Unsure - 9%

According to many gay marriage proponents I've spoken to, the majority of those polled have extremist views and are deserving of those negative labels.

Me too. In the spirit of equality, I'd like to arbitrarily pick my 12 favorite topics and have all the school kids celebrate that.

My top twelve favorite topics:
1 - January
2 - February
3 - March
4 - Relative Work
5 - May
6 - CrW
7 - July
8 - Vertical Relative Work Awareness
9 - September
10 - Fitness and women with long healthy hair
11 - November
12 - Presents

There - I feel so. Socially conscious. It's so nice and smug.

Obviously the other 7 months are always "their" months and have always been. TIs and swoopers always get preferential treatment.

I just want "equality" for the ones I listed.

That, and "January". January has had a hard road.

Some people are wrong or right (at least to some degree). If you believe no one is wrong or right (at least to some degree), then you lack logic and reasoning.

Not everyone and everything is equal. If you believe everyone and everything is equal, then you lack logic and reasoning.

Now that we got that out of the way...

How about each month be its own history month. In January we could learn about all things that happened in January, in February we would learn about all the things that happened in February, ...

Yes, that's bigotry.

If you take the position that school is for the purpose of producing competent little functionaries to toil away in the interests of corporations, then such things are indeed optional. If you take the position (which I do) that schools are to educate the citizens of tomorrow, then art, music, shop... are indispensible components of said education.

A-fucking-men !!!

(btw, I live in Philly and wouldn't send my son to school here if you paid me to!)

ETA: The Gay Month thing has nothing to do with my reasons for avoiding Philly public schools. The fact that they are crappy schools does.

It's not about fair! Kids are there to get the skills to support themselves. Life is seldom fair, however over long term hard work and smarts equal monetary rewards. Johnny needs to read and do math and to think in a logical way and be able to express his ideas. Secular progressives want everything fair, it's not. Any random malfunction may kill you and not me. Life is like that :o

Right. But "secular progressive" riggers still try to prevent you from dying from that malfunction. It's not wrong to try to make things perfect even though you know you will not ever succeed 100%.

But if he/she isn't 100% successful that wouldn't be fair, would it? and I guess then someone whould be a victim :P

Life ain't fair! Reserves malfunction sometimes. Some kids can't read, or vote, or understand math, or know where Venezuela is. They don't know any poets, sculptors or authors, and they have no idea why some people insist the US government has three parts. Doesn't mean riggers and teachers aren't doing their best to fix those problems.
