A nice feature of California's ballot-initiative system is that they allocate four areas in the voter information guide for pro and con arguments. They get one page for pro, one page for con, and a smaller area for rebuttals of both. They're often not that helpful, with both sides writing bloviated stuff like:
And thankfully there is the 5th section - the legislative analysis. I rarely need to turn to the 2 pages of lies (this 40B of spending won't raise your taxes).

worked with NRA on this one!
AB 2222, a measure that would have mandated new restrictions on target rifles chambered for .50 BMG cartridges, was defeated by a vote by the Assembly Public Safety Committee on Tuesday, April 23. This bill sought to register .50 caliber BMG rifles and place them under an arbitrary permit system.
A special thanks goes to all California NRA members who worked tirelessly to defeat this measure!
Wad them back up. I can't buy a .50 in CA. Those who owned them prior are grandfathered, but that's about it. Still can't buy or sell to another person. AB50, passed in 2004.
QuoteIm sorry but this really does confound me.
Why would you want to own a .05 cal weapon?
I understand certain issues such as collections of weapons for their historic value, your constitutional right to bare arms and the need to kill Elephants quickly and cleanly.
View .50 Cal owners the way you would view serious archers. Both spend considerable (2-8k for a 50) money on a device that is used to accurately hit a very small target very far away. And in both, you don't want to be in between the shooter and the target.
And neither has any practical purpose for violence. 50 cal bans are passing not because there is a real threat, but because gun controllers have retreated to picking on the obviously evil looking guns. Their hopes of total bans got shattered by the 2000 election, and now gun control is a dirty word for the Democratic Party, like abortion often has been for the GOP. On the platform, but a good way to lose votes.

I just dont understand the mentality of someone wanting to own one just because he can.
that's called freedom. Getting fuzzy these days.
QuoteDon't get your panties in a wad. The NRA will never let it happen
>Ban on .50 Cal. Defeated in California

I feel it, when I sorrow most;
'Tis better to have loved and lost
Than never to have loved at all.

In the interest of the safety of our children and our neighborhoods would you be willing to have an assault weapons ban on all military style weapons and rifles that are .50cal?
Didn't you proudly vote for your party of choice in this election? Be careful what you wish for.QuoteIMHO that is the most disgusting and dishonest way to pose a question to the voters in a LONG time.
How the fuck can they get aways with stating things this way without ANY proof that the AWB stopeed any criminals at all?
Repeat after me, Democratic Socialist Party.

If youre implying I am a democrat, socialist, or otherwise you are most definately wrong.
If you are implying that the Dem Socialists are the way to retain or constitutional rights you are wrong as well.
