Are we really runnig out of oil?

There is a huge deposit of oil shale in western Colorado that could meet all of our petroleum needs for the next century. Unfortunately, the distilling process is an environmental nightmare. Really nasty by-products.

Some people(Shell) are working on more environmentally friendly ways to extract and refine oil shale;I wouldn't completely write it off yet. If we find a way to use oil shale it will only prolong our demise but hey it might mean cheap jumps for the rest of our life time.

No worries. Canada will come and save the day w/ their tar sands;) I'd go go up there to work but it's to freakin cold and you get taxed to death by the U.S. AND Canadahttp://money.cnn.com/2006/10/04/news/economy/oil_sands/index.htm

Off the south coast of new zealand there are huge oil deposits. one that was sampled in the 1970's was bigger than the nothwest slope and there are more. there was even talk that the hole in the ozone layer over the antartic ocean is due to methane from the huge amounts of gas and oil under that ocean.

Just what I read dunno if it is true?

Do you know where the theroy came from? Link? Person?

I read a book called 'New Zealands lost oilfields'
It was about the surveying of the ocean just south of Stewart island. The deal wen't bad between the N.Z. govornment and the U.S. company that was contracted to prospect, through kilometres of ocean and rock they only drilled 8 holes and in 3 they found gushers of the finest crude you can get, 1 was pure natural gas and the others were solid rock.
It all makes sense because the area I come from in the south of the South island of N.Z. is protected as a world heratage area as the flora and some fauna(no native mammals exept bats) is the same as the jurassic period and has remained out of the ocean since that time.

the seabed is perfect for it there.

I cant remember the authors name though.

Oh Look I just found a reference to it here.

////

Don't hold your breath. Tar Sands extraction is limited by the availability of natural gas and water. For one thing, we've already hit peak natural gas in North America. Without some revolutionary new extraction techniques the tar sands will never reach their projected output. To do so would create a lake of oily water the size of England anyway, so it's probably best that it doesn't. Also, even at maximum projected output, the tar sands would only slightly soften the world production decline rate after PO, since conventional sources have much more magnitude. Another problem I have with the tar sands (I am CDN btw) is that they have an extremely low energy profit margin, and use cleaner energy (natural gas) to make dirtier energy at little gain in terms of EROEI (energy returned over energy invested).

The methane you're referring to may be methane clathrates; they do indeed exist under the ocean. Getting it out without releasing it into the atmosphere will be tricky though. I hope they figure out a way; methane is one of the best fuels out there.

Didn't Dixie Lee Ray once assert that the hole in the ozone layer at the South pole was caused by too many damn sheep in NZ emitting methane in their flatulance?

:D:D well we used to have 40,000,000 sheep in new zealand to our (at the time) population of 3,000,000

Now New zealand is moving more toward Dairy farming as our major income. Tourism is a close second and gaining ground. I don't think the farts could make a hole over antarctica though:D:D

Nope.
It's all smoke and mirrors to keep the price up.
AND we've been lied to as to the nature of oil formation.
It's not a finite "fossil fuel" but a sustainable material produced deep in the magma of the earth.

Crude is the lowest it's been in 17 months, back to its October '04 levels.

but even at that price it would still multilpy our countries GDP by about a million(or so) in the first year. Milk powder and cheese take shitloads invesment too but thats all private. if the govornment could get the oil drilled and sell it in euros we would be Rich....

...why is that such a bad idea? oh those pesky americans that tried to scam it off us in the late 70's they don't like 'Other' countries to control oil.

So I guess the question from rushmc that began the thread is now answered...

...we are NOT running out of oil... America IS running out of oil because they drove 5 litre vehicles for decades thinking it was going to last forever.
and new Zealand and other countries are going to cash in on thier misfortune.

The answer from the article you posted is "yes."

"CERA argues that the world is likely to begin running out of oil between 2030 and the middle of the century."

To paraphrase a famous man - we know we're running out, we're just arguing over the date. I'll be around in 2030, and I assume you will be too. And my kids will definitely be. We're doomed unless we can switch to alternatives before then.

On a tangential issue, why are oil prices not rising? The election was eight days ago. :o:o:o

Gas jumped from $1.97 to $2.09 two days after the election in Tulsa.

Tulsa gas prices jumped here to, two days after the election, as the election was here when it was in Tulsa:P.................sorry, couldn't help.:$

If we can get ultracapacitors working well in cars, I don't think it can be that far away that we start to see electric motors being used in light aircraft, and it's only a matter of time before they scale up to bigger and better things, like an Otter-sized electric jumpship. Pave the runway with solar cells, replace the windsock with a wind turbine, and then who cares about oil. Maybe jumping will be free, then.

Of course, this is still an if. I've not yet seen a working electric car with nothing but capacitive energy storage.

>Aviation will become rare....no alt fuels.

The Diamond DA42 Twin Star is a twin engine diesel that will run on biodiesel.

The Embraer 202 Ipanema cropduster runs on ethanol.

Cessnas, Mooneys and Pipers have STC kits that allow conversion to ethanol operation.

The higher prices of these fuels will no doubt make flying more expensive (will make driving more expensive as well) but they (and the aircraft that use them) are available now.

Sure and they are sweet (Twin star's), but how about 737's, MD-80's, etc? They will suffer, I don't see an alternative, but who knows?

I agree the fossil fule thing is BS, but it isn't regenerable in our lifetimes. So essentially it is finite. Hell, the sun is finite, but not for millions of years till jesus turns it off. :)

Brettski is onto it. I wonder if those ultraceptors create Ozone?

A capacitor is a basic energy storage device. They've been around about as long as electronics and were typically used in filtering applications as the amount of energy that could be stored was miniscule making them entirely unuseful as a power source/store. Supercapacitors and ultracapacitors are newer technologies that are providing hugely superior power storage capabilities that are starting to make them more practical as sources of stored power.

By themselves, an ultracapacitor will not create ozone, however, whenever you create an electrical arc in the air, you do create small amounts of ozone. Certain types of electrical motors that use brushes will cause arcing, and therefore will create small amounts of ozone. There are types of AC motors that do not require brushes, though, and should therefore be completely ozone free.

The bigger question with technology such as this is where does the energy come from to charge up the capacitor or battery or whatever? If it comes from existing coal or oil powered infrastructure, then we're just moving the same fossil fuel problems to a different location. Ultracapacitors, improved battery technology and/or fuel cells may provide a new way to make energy portable in the future, but to truly solve the problems associated with fossil fuels, we still need to further develop renewable energy sources like solar and wind generation.
