Breast Feeding In Public

Recommended Posts

It has nothing to do with "American" views on breasts...:P It has to do with common descretion. I mean, lets face it, nobody is arguing that it's not natural or normal to breast feed. Even in public it's fine...but some, like me, never want to see it. Just like I don't want to see you peeing at the park..or some fat guy in a grape smuggler at the beach.

so cover up. (unless you're hot...which breastfeeders in public never are!) Just kidding about that..I don't want to see it even if they are hot. (which they never are)

The above statement regarding not-hot...it's a joke! If you don't think it's funny...not my problem. I just saw on the news a bunch of mothers doing a sit-in breast feeding thing for the cameras...ALL UN-HOT. :o

I don't think the baby gives a damn whether you want to see it or not.

I totally understand this mother not wanting to cover her baby's face with an airline blanket that hasn't been washed in who-knows-when.

Been a long time since I've seen a new parent who didn't have a huge freaking bag of blankets, towels, spit-up-rags, and all manner of other crap that could be used to keep it discreet.

Seems only polite to me to at least keep it on the down-low in a public place.

I know I don't like it when people watch me breast feeding. :o

Okay, say you don't want to see it...but how do you feel about women flashing their boobies in public? Or wearing very low-cut shirts? I'm guessing THAT doesn't bother you, you probably enjoy that. :S

A mother feeding her baby is not offensive. When I have to see some woman's boobs because she thinks she has to show them off to get attention, that to me is offensive.

So it's fine to flash the boobs and expose cleavage, but not okay that a little bit of skin shows when breastfeeding. What a messed up society.:S

II don't want to see that on the plane...ok we'll if they're hot I'll watch.

Would you rather have the poor kid crying the whole flight? Breast feedng is the best way to keep a baby quiet and clear their ears as the plane climbs or descends. Vskydiver use to nurse our kids on plane flights, under a light blanket, during takeoff and landing. Worked like a charm. And yes, she's really hot.:P

Damn, that's perfect. Just like American TV, where my kids can watch thousands of hours of murders and other violence, but a naked breast . . OH MY GOD![:/]

With the way TSA has been, I can see why a parent wouldn't want to drag a huge diaper bag on the airplane. They might be stuck at TSA for hours!

How about a single diaper....or even a napkin for heaven's sake....to cover up your tit? Or better yet she could purchase a nursing top. Easy to find at your local maternity shop. :)

My baby refused to let me put a blanket over his head. Trust me, your baby will let you know how he likes it too. And you'll do whatever he wants because, as someone else posted - you need him to eat as much as he needs to! :D

I tried to BF in public. God, it would've made my life so much easier! But my son needed lots of room to stretch out and no shirts, blankets, towels, whatever even near his face.

I had no desire to make a BFing statement - so I found private places.

Although I totally understand and support any woman to BF in anyway she wants to.

We used to have a blind woman at our church who regularly sat in the front row and breast fed her kid during Fathers sermon. The folks in the back of the church had no idea what was going on, but the kids who sat on the altar and did music with me were aware, as was Father. It was hilarious...

If you need to breast feed your sprog, then whats the harm in covering up? - no one gets offended, and no one gets an eyeful of hot boobies (or otherwise Pirate)...surely let common sense prevail.

agreed :)

I agree with this, too. -and I don't see where people are saying that the blanket has to be on the baby's face. If I had to nurse and there was no women's lounge or a private area (well shoot even in a women's lounge I used a blanky ) I used a light receiving blanket and arranged it so that my arm puffed it out so it was more like a little tent...and baby could see me through the opening at the top. If there was just NO WAY to do this, I'd find a women's bathroom, plain and simple. People have to go to the bathroom, women have to breast feed, but we don't have to all do it in front of everyone else. :P

A little creative drape to the blanky was usually all it took for everyone to be happy. :)
-Oh and don't give me guff about how 'tough' it is to feed a baby one way or the other. I nursed TWINS this way, for Pete's sake! They just took turns; i'd rock one with my foot in his car seat while nursing the other. B|

Yeah... I agree. And I even bought a special cover up so I could nurse in public when I needed to, however, he hated it. I remember one time I was at California Pizza Kitchen having dinner with my family. The baby got hungry and was crying with the blanket over him. I went to the bathroom so I could nurse him without the blanket. I remember sitting there on the toilet feeding my son. I felt horrible. Toilets were flushing, people were pissing and I definitely wouldn't want to eat my dinner in there. I went back to the table and nursed Willem. I didn't use a blanket because he protested but you couldn't see my breast. I had a nursing bra on and my shirt pretty much covered everything else. Going to the bathroom is not always an option.

This isn't directed at you at all as I know you did nurse your babies, but it seems that it's mostly men and women who never breastfed who have the biggest issues with it. I could care if a woman nurses her baby or gives her baby formula. That's not my business. What's good for one person isn't good for someone else. I don't condemn anyone's choice, just don't condemn mine.

IF the mother is discreet

IF the child is NOT old enough to have been weaned

There is NOTHING more disgusting and offensive than when a child runs up to its mother and says something indicating it wants to nurse
say when a child is 5/6 years old and the mother is no longer even lactating and she does it in publick..disgusting

WTF. Please tell me you are joking. Please tell me that people do not let 5/6 year olds do that. Please tell me that I am an idiot for not realising that you are joking.

Please tell me that YOU are joking! yuck. you serious? When a kid older than a baby is nursing there are some serious mental issues at work, on both the kid and the mother's part.

First time I saw it, I thought it was cool.
But, after seeing some many freakin' times where it makes you think the woman is an exibitionist, it makes me sick.

It's not about the woman, it's about the Baby. I think you don't understand the concept of breast feeding. The woman does not do it to show you her breasts, she does it to feed her Baby.
Why did you think it was cool the first time? Because you got to see breasts???
Why does it make you sick? Do you find it descusting to see a Baby beeing breast feedet. I don't want this to sound like a personal attack but maybe you should talk to a shrink about this.

When my son was young my wife would breastfeed him in public and we never had a complaint - she was always subtle and not making a big thing of it.

I have friends who have had complaints from members of the public and I think it is outrageous. There is nothing more natural than breastfeeding and those who have an issue with it only do so because of the ludicrous society we live in.

I have no problem with breastfeeding in public, nor do I have a problem with topless sunbathing, or naked for that matter when done discreetly. What I do have a problem with is people who think themselves above others and in a position to tell them what to do with their own bodies. That and french people.
