1969912 0 #1 November 17, 2006 One of the screws used to attach the gas key to the bolt carrier on my Colt Sporter (7.62x39) failed, resulting in feed failures. Is this a common problem? How can it be prevented? JohnRich 4 #2 November 17, 2006 I've never heard of that happening before. How did it fail? Did it shear off? There really isn't any force put on that - it simply holds the gas tube in place to line-up with the tube in the forearm. And the screws should be staked into place, to keep them from backing-out from the vibration of recoil. There are some AR-15 website forums on the net. You would tap more experience there. What the heck are you doing fooling around with 7.62x39 in an AR, anyway?
1969912 0 #3 November 17, 2006 Hi JohnRich, Colt made the Sporter Lightweight in 7.62x39 back in the '90's, maybe earlier. Bought it new, preban. ~$500 in '93. Something for the collection, I guess. After having some feed failures, I found that one screw was broken where it enters the carrier. They were factory staked and had never been removed. I assume it is a result of fatigue at the thread root or perhaps the factory overtorqued the screws I have not seen a good analysis of the problem on the web and thought someone in that "build an AR-15" thread might have some ideas, I don't think it is limited to 7.62 variants. Anyway, thanks. Will fix it this weekend and go from there. FallRate 0 #4 November 18, 2006 This reminds me of reading Playboy as an adolescent. In the letters section, I assumed there would be "Best Position?", "Easiest Way to Hook-Up?", "Is Six Inches Better Than Average?", etc. Instead, I mostly found questions concerning the proper consumption of french cheeses and overly detailed questions concerning stereo speakers. Not that the question you have posed is in any way out of line...just not the kind of dialogue I would expect to find on the subject of guns in SC. It's nice to be surprised every once in a while. Does anyone know if Asa Baber skydives? FallRate
Badgerord 0 #5 November 18, 2006 The screw breackage is not common, but does occur. It is most likley that it was ham fisted at the factory. Getting the broken piece to screw out will be the hardest part, but can be replaced. When replacing, don't excede the torque limit of 35-40 inch- pounds (per Army TM 9-1005-319-23&P page 3-27)

kenneth21441 0 #8 November 18, 2006 Buy a AK or an UZI, The Ak has worked for me for years with no problems other then feeding that monster. Never had an issue with parts going bad and she fires in the sand. Take that AR in the sand and watch her jam up on you in a heart beat. I had to use that piece of crap in the Army and would only trust it if i could use it as a club to hit someone with.Kenneth Potter FAA Senior Parachute Rigger Tactical Delivery Instructor (Jeddah, KSA) FFL Gunsmith
1969912 0 #9 November 18, 2006 Yep, the AK would be my choice if I could only have one. Love to have an UZI. This is a completely non-political topic about guns. However, some of those Bonfire folks are so paranoid about gun stuff, that even a discussion of some firearms technical maintenance frightens them. So, the moderators have deemed that all gun subjects should be here, even if they are apolitical. Silly, but true. That's the kind of reaction that guns produce in some people. And it only takes a few anti-gun nuts, to cause a silly rule to be put in place for everyone. Common sense isn't involved much. But over in Bonfire, feel free to talk about homosexual butt fucking all you want. No one seems to object to that topic.

An AR15 configured for recreational use shoots minute of tin-can, making it a lot more effective against the soda cans and paper targets most of us shoot.
