Also in this book was a policeman character called Mr. Plod, which became common slang for a policeman in the '60s, but is, I believe, now obsolete. And you missed the food called "Toad in the Hole". rs2kmk5 0 #3 December 2, 2006 A traffic warden is someone employed solely to concern themselves with the parking of motor cars illegally on the roads here in the UK - most people affectionately refer to them with a different name, ie Cunt. http://trafficwarden.org/ Napes - WTF? Dont know that one (maybe a northern thing?) - but tatties are Potatoes...napes may, and emphasis may be swede or turnips Spotted dick is an after dinner dessert - sponge with treacle, and raisons (the spots!) Clicky http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spotted_dick Tosser = wanker, go figure. Noddy - was a childrens cartoon character, but could be cockney rhyming slang for something else??? ExAFO 0 #5 December 2, 2006 No matter how good a confection it may be, I would never be able to order "spotted dick." It's just too wrong-sounding. Another UK question--I gather driving a stick-shift auto is easier for left handed people...true? How accepted is the 1 pound coin? The $1 coin here has never seemed to work... Fish and Chips-- a friend of mine told me that when she ordered it in a pub near RAF Mildenhall, it was drowned in the tallow it was fried in, barely drained, and served in newsprint....erm, yuck... It was fun. When I got on the wrong side of the road, nobody swore at me or laid on the horn; all I got was a polite toot. mr2mk1g 10 #14 December 3, 2006 "Stick shift" is easier for right handed people when on the left - it means your dominant hand can keep doing the important thing - steering. The £1 coin is universally accepted - our lowest "paper" currency is £5 - (equal to about $10). We also have a £2 coin which is less well circulated. I collect all of mine. I bought my first rig in £2 coins and since then have collected another grand's worth... still looking for a reason to spend them. Fish and chips are so 80's. The national dish is curry. orribolollie 0 #17 December 3, 2006 "Stick shift" is easier for right handed people when on the left - it means your dominant hand can keep doing the important thing - steering. This is SO true. I have diven stick (manual), 'enthusiatically' both here and in the states. Wether its front, rear or 4 wheel drive you want your dominant hand on the wheel as your changing gears. When I started driving in Califonia I found it very unsettling to take my dominant hand off the wheel! Except to give someone the finger of course. Thats just natural with both hands...and regardless of the side of the road you drive on haha. I'm about to have roast 'tatties and neeps' today...they are tops. Edit : Wait...napes are turnips are they? yuck...i was sure napes was parsnips...shows all I know. Id say 'Plod' was fairly obsolete; ive heard nothing but 'Pig' now for a long time. Round are way they were called 'raddie' for a fair old while....i have no idea where that came from!

Anyway, I need my dominant hand for my mobile phone and to turn the pages of the book that I'm reading. (.)Y(.) Andy9o8 2 #19 December 3, 2006 Made no difference to me, either, whenever I've traveled to the UK & had to rent - er, hire - a car. Funny thing - at home, we have 1 auto trans car & 1 manual trans car (we're in the US). When driving the stick, of course, I have to steer mostly with my left (non-dominant). But when I'm driving the auto I find myself steering mostly with my right. Go figure.

[url]Sat Dec 2, 10:53 AM ET LISBON (AFP) - Oscar-winning US actress Gwyneth Paltrow feels dinner talk is far more interesting in her adopted homeland Britain than back in her native country. "I love the English lifestyle, it's not as capitalistic as America. People don't talk about work and money, they talk about interesting things at dinner," she told "NS", the weekend magazine supplement of daily Portuguese newspaper Diario de Noticias on Saturday. "I like living here because I don't fit into the bad side of American psychology.
