Just a quick point. Time magazine had an interesting article about what some real and perceived risks are, and how we're responding to them.

We as individuals seem to be spending a lot of time responding to perceived risks (e.g. terrorism) with very low likelihoods of being realized, and less time responding to real ones (e.g. obesity and poor diet as contributors to heart disease).

Yes, 9/11 was very real to the 2799 people who died there. But so is the heart disease to the nearly half million people who die from it (and the considerably larger number who are being treated with expensive medicines).

We're right to spend money and effort in preventing terrorism; if we don't, then it'll happen more often. But we should keep it in perspective, and understand that the risk is small in comparison to others.

A while ago new Scientist published a few short articles about the disparity between federal funding for researching cures and vaccines for biological weapons like anthrax, which has killed less than a handful of US citizens in the last 5 years and diseases like Flu, H5N1 and other 'pandemic' threats which kill or could kill thousands.

I can't remember the figures but the Bio-weapons research was getting disparately large amounts of funding.

Yes Jan of 2001

Lets see... the Justice Dept of John Ashcroft.....we know what is good for you .....and the abuses have been many.. with far too wide a brush that law enforcement has used the "Patriot Act" to arrest people for many things OTHER THAN Terrorism as it was intended.... because it was easier to use than existing laws.. that require a more stringent evidentiary environment for a warrant.

The Administration...going out of their way to make the world a more dangerous place for americans with the all encompassing Bush Doctrine that scares our friends and allies as well as empowering our enimies with more converts to their cause..... being the big bully on the block makes others figure out a way to take out the big bully.

The NSA and other intelligence agencies... who can surveil americans with impunity without bothering with that silly warrant thing from the FISA Court.

A Military.. with people like Gen Tommy Franks that truely believes that after the next incident that Martial Law will be declared....and obviously has war gamed that scenario... and just cant wait for it to happen because of their enhanced place in the pecking order..

When we say now a US citizen can be held indefinitely without due process, Representation, or even a charge this is not out of false fear but a reality.

Which of the ten amendments has NOT (yet) been under attack from this administration? The 3rd, maybe. Skirting around the BoR and coming up with ingenious stratagems for avoiding its requirements is hardly the hallmark of an administration with any respect for th Constitution.

Telling people that terrorists will be detonating nuclear weapons in the center of your city is fear-mongering. Removing Habeas Corpus is an incredible blow to the rights we used to have. But since no explosions are involved, the media doesn't cover it in any depth.

In Iraq, US soldiers are fighting for the US - or at least, that's what they've been told. It's sad that we allow the very constitution they're fighting for to erode away. We'd do better as a nation if all people (not just soldiers) kept in mind the oath that soldiers swear.

When people rate Lincoln and Roosevelt as great presidents, civil liberties are not mentioned. Wilson, a champion of womens rights was probably worse in civil liberties. All three served in time of war. You only have to read history to compare how President Bush is doing compared to other presidents. I believe the majority of Americans think he is doing fine.
