What brand of pistol for Reliable Target Use?

Recommended Posts

Ok i'm considering purchasing a semi-auto pistol to go to the range with. I'm not looking for the best of the best. I'm looking for something that i won't have to worry about getting things fixed all the time. Something thats pretty accurate, and not sell a kidney expensive(used weapons or welcome). I'm looking at either .40s&w or .45acp

I grew up shooting my grandpa's Marine Corp issue 1911 that went through WWII and Korea. Also my dads Match grade 1911, and my step-grandpa's Glock 19.

So please Post up what brand(s) you own and your thoughts. Thanx

For just fun target plinking, I'd recommend something like the Ruger Mk I.

If you're looking for something that can double for home defense, a good (used) S&W in .357 is a good value, and you can use .38 special for targete/plinking.

If you're an auto kind of guy, it's pretty hard to go wrong with the 1911 platform. Kimber makes good clones, but I don't care much for their new grip safety setup.

Owned:
Colt Combat Elite (stolen :( )
Colt 1911A1 (new series 80) - still have it.
Kimber Custom Target (still have it - on loan to a friend)
Kimber Pro Carry (on loan)
Ruger Mk. I (still have it)
Taurus PT99 (sold)
Taurus .357 (ex's pistol)
Mike

As I am sure you have already learned, the only way to become and stay proficient with a handgun is practice, and lots of it. Unfortunately the cost of ammo for a .40 or .45 limits the time most of us can spend at the range. With that in mind I will offer the same tidbit I always do when asked a similar question...buy two guns. A good quality .22 semi-auto costs app. the same as 1000 rounds of ammo for the big bores and, quite honestly, is more fun to shoot. The model I currently enjoy is a Ruger MkII. This allows you to spend time on the fundamentals of breathing, grip, sight picture, stance, and trigger pull without concerning yourself with such thoughts as recoil and the fact that each time you pull the trigger it costs you 25-35 cents.
For a big bore sidearm I have always been partial to Mr. Brownings design of 1911, those made by Springfield Armory in particular. In a .40 the Sig 226 &229 are nice , and the new kid on the block Smith & Wesson M&P looks and handles like a winner.

In 9mm you can't go wrong you can buy ammo anywhere, and cheap enough. I like the +p+ 9mm it hits as hard as .357mag and you get 15+1 rounds or a 20 round mag for range use.

I know people thnk 9mm has no punch but I say if you are so sure then maybe you would be willing to try one from the receiving end.

It does not matter what caliber is used the outcome is determined by shot placement, and the damage resulting from it.

Bullets do not knock anything down, that is the result of the muscular/nervous system being damaged.

I'll take my 9mm pre-expanded, thanks.... :P;):)

You want a fast, hard hitting round... find a smith that does conversions and send him a Colt or Springer 9mm/38 Super and have it converted to 9x23 Winchester.

You get:
10 rd flush fit mag for 11+1
Recoil similar to a hot 9mm or 40 S&W
Terminal performance very (VERY!!) close to .357 Magnum

I have always loved the M-1911A1, I have more then I need and not as many as I want. and .45 ball is cheap to shoot. If I could only one gun it would be a 1911. But I don't have too, I love to shoot my BHP, 92FS and Colt M-2000, that's a Colt version of the Glock.
For the money the Ruger Autos are hard to beat.
But why just an auto have you thought of a SSA or DA wheelgun ? I have a Ruger Vaqurao that can shoot either a .45 long colt or .45 ACP
And then there is the mighty .22, but we won't go there,...........yet.

In pistol I go through anywhere between 60-500 rounds.

In rifle it is easy to spend some cash.

I shoot match grade ammo in match grade bbl's. and that is not cheap. (John knows all about that)[:/]

I can get away with shooting wolf in chrome lined bbl's so that saves some cash.[:/]

M855 is real expensive if you can find it right now.>:(

I found a good deal on 12ga.00 buck in clear cases/hulls.
$90 for 250rds.

I wish I could even get 6.5mm Grendel right now...there is not any to be had yet.

BTW I cannot get ammo mail ordered here (it is illegal) as I live in Crook County IL., and therefore I am more likely to commit a firearm related crime than if I lived 800 feet west of where I live. (Kane County):S>:(

So maybe we are getting off topic, but I don't stick to one caliber or one type of gun, When I find a good price on ammo I stock up, a while back SOG had a great price on Dutch 9mm NATO, less the a hundred buck with shipping so I bought a few cases. Then there was some NATO SS109, really cheap, more cases. I'm always looking for a deal on .22, between me and my son we shoot a lot of that. Over the summer I got in a 8mm mood and shot over a 1000 rounds. We shoot a lot at our DZ.
So does anyone know a good price on .303 Brit. ? I'm down to my last case.

Id agree with mnealtx on the S+W .357, even though you were mentioning semi-auto not revolver. My 5 1/2' 626 has very excelent accuracy range. If you were also looking for concealed carry, a colt .38 detective special. There was a reason these were police issue for a snubnose for years. If you are lucky enough to find one. My is a 72 and is my prize possession. You wont find a 2'' barrel more accurate. Otherwise do as mneil suggested. More reliablity in a revolver and less worries of gunsmithing. In defense there is absolutely no reason for more than 6 rounds. People that cant shoot hurt innocents.

Where is .45acp cheap?:|
I have friends who don't shoot their much due to ammo cost.
A few hundred rounds at the range can add up quickly.

Forget about the ammo in sporting good stores. Use mail order, buy in bulk, military surplus. I've shot WWII surplus by the case, that is still sure-fire and accurate. Pick up an edition of "Shotgun News" at your news stand, and you'll see lots of ads for the stuff.

Yep, .30 caliber rifle cartridges and bigger can easily cost $1 per round. And since I shoot in 80-shot matches, that would be too much money. Hence, I reload my own for a fraction of the cost.

Get a good .22, like a Ruger, perhaps with a bull barrel. Shoot the hell out of it. Then start looking closely at larger weapons and you will have a better idea what fits your hand nicely and just feels "right", whatever the caliber. Also, many commercial shooting ranges have a good selection of handguns you can rent.

My vote, though, is for a 9mm Sig P228 if they are still available.

For just plinking, go with a .22, you can buy 500rds from Wal-Mart for well under $20 (or was it $10)? Even reloading .45ACP you can't get that cheap.

Beyond that, just about all the big names make good weapons in the major "favorite" calibers. If you're wanting something that will double for a home defense or a carry weapon, then the discussion will be a lengthy one.

Other then that, find a weapon that is in your price range, that fits your hands and is fun (as well as cost effective) to shoot. If that's a $2300 Wilson Combat, then good for you. If its a $400 CZ, then good for you. If its a $100 "Hi-Tech" 9mm with the magnesium slide, then you're an idiot.:P Ok, seriously, I've shot Sig, Glock, H&K, S&W, Colt, CZ, KalTec, Kimber, Wilson, STI...well, actually, I can't remember every gun and caliber, I've shot all the "big" brands in the typical calibers and found that I enjoyed the weapons that fit my hand the best. For instance, I think that Sig has a great pistol, but I don't like them for myself. They don't fit my hand well. Nothing fits my hand like a 1911, 2nd in line for me are the full sized Glocks.

Which one is the most accurate? Well, a LARGE (read over 90%) of shooters out there don't shoot well enough to outshoot the gun they have. Even if its an out of the box Glock or KelTec. H&K might have a smaller MOA but it doesn't mean crap due to the shooter's lack of proper grip, sight alignment and trigger control. So I rarely believe anyone's crap talking about having a "more accurate" gun. More then once I've out shot "shooters" who had bench made 1911 race guns and were talking crap about my old Glock 17. By the way, that really pisses them off.:D
