Belief vs. Reality

Recommended Posts

Throwing this out there. Do you believe if you really believe in something, does it make it true? Like if you don't believe in a hell.. then there isn't a hell. Or do you believe there is a universal truth no matter what we believe in or not?

What do you believe in and why?

I believe that science does a much better job making the universe easier to understand than organized man-made religions ever will. That doesn't mean that science has all of the answers (at least not yet). It's just that science does a much better job explaining the universe than these mythical "you better believe our version otherwise you will be damned into eternal hell if you don't" man-made religions. Remember organized man-made religions were conceived long before humans even comprehended our own solar system let alone the universe.

The truth(reality) exists regardless of our perception of it.
Whether or not we choose to believe something has no bearing on the reality of it's existence.

Edited for spelling.
"Science, logic and reason will fly you to the moon. Religion will fly you into buildings."
"Because figuring things out is always better than making shit up."

Are you just saying simply believing or do you mean actually changing reality based on your perception of it? New Age beliefs, pardigm shifts, etc.
Seems like a lot of people these days believe in the latter.
Myself, I really don't know, but I really find the thought fasinating.

You can change yourself by simply believing in yourself. It takes time, and the belief has to be true, but yes, it can be done. But that's psychological.

Physically, no. Just because I believe in Santa Claus doesn't make him real.

I know some people who don't believe in an idea, then will say it's not true just because they don't believe in it. I'm open to many thoughts and ideas because I don't know what's true

If you jump out of an airplane and then just decide that you no longer believe in gravity, you'll still die regardless.

Belief vs. Reality

ONce upon a time a high school student said to his father:

"Dad, I'm having trouble getting started with this homework assignment. We're supposed to write an essay about the difference between "Theory" and "Reality"

The young man's Dad looked at him and said, "I think I can help you. Go and ask your mother if she would sleep with another man for one million dollars."

The boy does this, and his mom says, "Well, I've always been faithful. But with a million dollars, we could have a secure retirement & be able to put you & your sister through college with no worries. So to secure the future of our family, yes, I supposed I would do it for a million dollars."

The boy tells his Dad what happened. His Dad says, "Go and ask your sister the same question. Hell, make it two million dollars!"

The boy does this. His sister says, "Well, I was saving myself for marriage, but I could do a lot of good with $2 million. I could make a secure future for myself & my family, or even start a charity to help the poor in 3rd world countries. So yes, I would sleep with someone for $2 million."

The boy goes & tells his Dad what happened. His father says, "Now, here we see the difference between Theory and Reality:

In Theory, we're sitting on 3 million dollars.

In Reality, we're living with a couple of sluts."

The way you keep on referring to man-made religions suggests that you believe there is another kind of religion too?

I believe there is a power in the human consciousness that we haven't even begun to understand.

I believe that changing the way we see the world, will literally change the world.

Think back many hundreds of years ago about the mythical and supernatural events in our history. At the time, people "knew" that magic existed, they "knew" vampires hunted them in the night. Things like this were believed around the world.

As society grew, we, in general, no longer believed in such things. Does that mean they never existed? I don't think so. I don't necessarily believe that everyone is the middle ages were paranoid fools. (Although there was alot of fear spread by the Church, so things can only be taken so far)

I also believe, that science can explain everything, thereby becoming "truth"

Science, belief, and technological sophistication all lead to discovery.

I don't really know where I'm going with this...I'm just shooting my mouth off.
What goes up, must come DOWN!!!

Thinking that beliefs can change reality, other than the reality of what you believe, is just plain silly. Reality is that which does not go away or change just because a person's thinking goes away or changes.

Everyone is entitled to their beliefs, and the opinions generated by them. However, anybody who suspends, or displays a lack of diligence in the use of their critical thinking skills simply because it looks like the conclusions will contradict their belief or violate their senses, is willfully negligent in their search for the truth. They at least need to examine the contradiction and decide what is more important to them; basing belief on faith, hope, and desire; or basing belief on evidence, reason and logic.

Nothing wrong with going with the former, as long as it is not used to investigate and draw conclusions on things that fall within the realm of the latter. For example, it is nothing short of foolish to use faith based beliefs to study the structure of matter, the details of evolution, or the workings of the human genome. Likewise it is foolish to look to the scientific method to explain matters of faith like the purpose of life and reasons for existence.

IMO, people who understand that distinction can easily reconcile everything they observe, and have no problem with conflicting beliefs. Those who can not are doomed to reach the most ridiculous conclusions.
