So 21st century suicide bombers have divine inspiration too?

Sorry, that's just not a valid argument for the truth of the Bible.

What are you talking about?

Martyrdom as evidence of truth of the cause.

Martyrdom as evidence of truth of the cause.

I'm not talking about 21st Century suicide bombers here. I'm talking about 1st Century Christian martyrs who were eye-witnesses to the events in question and why we should take them seriously.

While technology has changed, religious fervor has not. There have been a great many people willing to martyr themselves for Islam, often in agonizing ways. That alone does not make them right; it just makes them dedicated. Same goes for all religions.

Dude... Refer to post # 696 for my explanation of why I think the Apostles were different. I don't think you guys are reading at least the page before. I feel like I'm having to repeat myself. Very frustrating.

You're only repeating yourself because you aren't listening. If you were actually responding to the points being raised you would realise that this stock argument of yours is simply not up to the job.
Do you want to have an ideagasm?

Either that or they just don't agree with your arguments. I think it's a bit of both...

Of course he can. However, considering this is what you wrote...

HAHAHA! I'm not defending billvon. Does he need defending? He's a big strong man with a brain to boot. But sometimes I just like to contribute.

>Refer to post # 696 for my explanation of why I think the Apostles were different.

I read it and I don't see much difference.

Let's look at the 9/11 hijackers. Nineteen Muslims died martyrs deaths based on their belief in their god and their desire to stop the evil forces trying to crush that religion (at least in their mind.) What did they see and what would cause them to believe enough to sacrifice their own lives for their cause? You’d be hard pressed to find any number of people - much less nineteen - who would be willing to die for a lie if they knew it to be a lie.

That does not mean they were right, just that they believed their cause to be true and just. We think they were wrong. That didn't stop them from becoming martyrs.

Given the situation the world is in right now, I would be very leery of equating the number of people willing to martyr themselves to the validity of that religion.

I don't particularly doubt the sincerity of the gospel writers, but on what evidence did they base their beliefs?

They walked, talked, and lived with Jesus. They saw for themselves the torture, crucifixion, death, burial, resurrection, and ascension. .

once again.. please provide ONE SINGLE SHRED OF OBJECTIVE EVIDENCE to back your assertion.

you cant. you have a STORY you believe, nothing more, nothing less..

They walked, talked, and lived with Jesus. They saw for themselves the torture, crucifixion, death, burial, resurrection, and ascension. That is the evidence on which they based their beliefs. That is the reason they were willing to die the way they did because they would not deny what they saw or speak about it. That is the reason why some took it to the extreme by requesting to be crucified head down because they didn’t feel worthy to die the way their Lord had died.

How do you know, YOU DONT KNOW FACT you simply cant because there is no "evidence.

If there was a single shred of evidence what so ever, we would all be believers and all these threads about religion would not exist...

All you have is a chemical reaction in your brain that makes you believe that this happened, and all based on a story....

And by the way, you still haven't answered my question from last week: Could you be mistaken in your presupposition about the non-existence of God and/or the supernatural?

You also made the claim that a supernatural explanation for Christ's empty tomb isn't necessary; I asked you for your explanation, but you never gave it.

Yes I did.

LOL. Classic! :P

Why go to the trouble of showing where you answered a question, when a simple "Yes I did" will do.

It reminds me of:
Quote

A: Come in.
M: Ah, Is this the right room for an argument?
A: I told you once.
M: No you haven't.
A: Yes I have.
M: When?
A: Just now.
M: No you didn't.
A: Yes I did.
M: You didn't
A: I did!
M: You didn't!
A: I'm telling you I did!
M: You did not!!
A: Oh, I'm sorry, just one moment. Is this a five minute argument or the full half hour?
M: Oh, just the five minutes.
A: Ah, thank you. Anyway, I did.
M: You most certainly did not.
A: Look, let's get this thing clear; I quite definitely told you.
M: No you did not.
A: Yes I did.
M: No you didn't.
A: Yes I did.
M: No you didn't.
A: Yes I did.
M: No you didn't.
A: Yes I did.
M: You didn't.
A: Did.
M: Oh look, this isn't an argument.
A: Yes it is.
M: No it isn't. It's just contradiction.
A: No it isn't.
M: It is!
A: It is not.
M: Look, you just contradicted me.
A: I did not.
M: Oh you did!!
A: No, no, no.
M: You did just then.
A: Nonsense!
M: Oh, this is futile!
A: No it isn't.
M: I came here for a good argument.
A: No you didn't; no, you came here for an argument.
M: An argument isn't just contradiction.
A: It can be.
M: No it can't. An argument is a connected series of statements intended to establish a proposition.
A: No it isn't.
M: Yes it is! It's not just contradiction.
A: Look, if I argue with you, I must take up a contrary position.
M: Yes, but that's not just saying 'No it isn't.'
A: Yes it is!
M: No it isn't!

A: Yes it is!
M: Argument is an intellectual process. Contradiction is just the automatic gainsaying of any statement the other person makes.

because spoon feeding anyone an answer (ala most Christian sects) does NOTHING to educate the individual. Looking for the answer for one self does..

a minor point in this context perhaps, but why should someone "do your work for you"? if you REALLY want to know.. go look for yourself...

Johnny Cash - God's Gonna Cut You Down

You can run on for a long time,
Run on for a long time,
Run on for a long time,
Sooner, or later, God'll cut you down.
Sooner, or later, God'll cut you down.

Go and tell that long tongue liar,
Go and tell that midnight rider,
Tell the rambiler, the gambler, the back biter,
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em down.

Well my goodness gracious,
Let me tell you the news.
My heads been wet with the midnight dew.
I've been down on bended knee,
Talkin to the man from Galiee.
He spoke to me in a voice so sweet,
I thought I heard the shuffle of angels feet.
He called my name and my heart stood still,
When He said "John go do my will"

Go and tell that long tongue liar,
Go and tell that midnight rider,
Tell the rambler, the gambler, the back biter,
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em down.

You can run on for a long time,
Run on for a long time,
Run on for a long time,
Sooner, or later, God'll cut you down.
Sooner, or later, God'll cut you down.

You can throw your rock, hide your hand,
Workin in the dark against your fellow man.
But as sure as God made black and white,
What's done in the dark,
Will be brought to the light.

You can run on for a long time,
Run on for a long time,
Run on for a long time,
Sooner, or later, God'll cut you down.
Sooner, or later, God'll cut you down.

Go and tell that long tongue liar,
Go and tell that midnight rider,
Tell the rambler, the gambler, the back biter,
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em down.

Run to the end of the highway by Keith Green

Well you can run to the end of the highway and not find what youre looking for,

Moving wont make your troubles disappear.

And you can search to the end of the highway and come back no better than before.

To find yourself youve got to start right here.

Well I came running when I got the news that you were leaving.

Oh, Ive gotta talk some sense to you, cause Im your friend.

You say you want to hit the road cause life is so deceiving.

Do you think its different at the other end?

So you can run to the end of the highway and not find what youre looking for.

Moving wont make your troubles disappear.

And you can search to the end of the highway and come back no better than before.

To find yourself youve got to start right here.

Oh I came running when I got the news that you were crying.

Oh my friend has life been so unkind to you?

You say you want to find a place where people are not lying.

If you find a place like that Ill go there too.

Oh, you can run to the end of the highway and not find what youre looking for.

Moving wont make your troubles disappear.

And you can search to the end of the highway and come back no better than before.

To find yourself youve got to start right here.

Yes, to find yourself, youve got to start right here.

this thread is totally ludicrous

IFgod is Omnipotent, Omniscient, Omnipresent,

THENgod is the AUTHOR of evil, as well as good.

Another FACT OF HISTORY that you deny or are ignorant(spoken with love) of is: the 'idea' of a good and bad 'god' and THE TRIUNE GOD are all PAGAN(pre-christian) beliefs.
we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively

wishers never choose, choosers never wish

Tony Christie - Amarillo

Sha la la lala lalala
Sha la la lala lalala
Sha la la lala lalala

When the day is dawning
on a Texas Sunday morning
how I long to be there
with Marie who's waiting for me there
every lonely city where I hang my hat
ain't as half as pretty as where my baby's at

Is this the way to Amarillo
every night I've been hugging my pillow
dreaming dreams of Amarillo
and sweet Marie who waits for me
show me the way to Amarillo
I've been weeping like a willow
crying over Amarillo
and sweet Marie who waits for me

Sha la la lala lalala
Sha la la lala lalala
Sha la la lala lalala
and Marie who waits for me

There's a church bell ringing
hear the song of joy that it's singing
for the sweet Maria
and the guy who's coming to see her
just beyong the highway, there's an open plain
and it keeps me going through the wind and rain

Is this the way to Amarillo
every night I've been hugging my pillow
dreaming dreams of Amarillo
and sweet Marie who waits for me
show me the way to Amarillo
I've been weeping like a willow
crying over Amarillo
and sweet Marie who waits for me

Sha la la lala lalala
Sha la la lala lalala
Sha la la lala lalala
and Marie who waits for me
Do you want to have an ideagasm?

"The Last Resort" Eagles

She came from Providence,
the one in Rhode Island
Where the old world shadows hang
heavy in the air
She packed her hopes and dreams
like a refugee
Just as her father came across the sea

She heard about a place people were smilin'
They spoke about the red man's way,
and how they loved the land
And they came from everywhere
to the Great Divide
Seeking a place to stand
or a place to hide

Down in the crowded bars,
out for a good time,
Can't wait to tell you all,
what it's like up there
And they called it paradise
I don't know why
Somebody laid the mountains low
while the town got high

Then the chilly winds blew down
Across the desert
through the canyons of the coast, to
the Malibu
Where the pretty people play,
hungry for power
to light their neon way
and give them things to do

Some rich men came and raped the land,
Nobody caught 'em
Put up a bunch of ugly boxes, and Jesus,
people bought 'em
And they called it paradise
The place to be
They watched the hazy sun, sinking in the sea

You can leave it all behind
and sail to Lahaina
just like the missionaries did, so many years ago
They even brought a neon sign: "Jesus is coming"
Brought the white man's burden down
Brought the white man's reign

Who will provide the grand design?
What is yours and what is mine?
'Cause there is no more new frontier
We have got to make it here

We satisfy our endless needs and
justify our bloody deeds,
in the name of destiny and the name
of God

And you can see them there,
On Sunday morning
They stand up and sing about
what it's like up there
They call it paradise
I don't know why
You call someplace paradise,
kiss it goodbye

Dark Angel - The New Priesthood

History's shown you that answers can't be found above.
Life's great questions are tackled only by us.
Knowledge of mysteries that puzzle your learned men of the cloth.
We've explanations that men of God can't fathom.

Searching for your destiny
In a book that's not reality.
We solve the the Earth's problems
Through our science and technology.

Look back one thousand years when science was in its infancy.
The church had the word, the world was forced to heed.
How many times they led astray, their flock was shown no mercy.
"It's God's will", not good enough, minds were closed ignorantly.

We are here to shed the light,
And your "Savior" is powerless to fight.
You must realize that your theology is wrong
And we are right.
Accept it for it's proven,
And the truth is for all to see.
Scientifically we'll answer any question there could be.

Obviously you don't see that we've become your deities.
Can't you see that we are your new priesthood?
Blinded by your piety and impotent divinity,
Recoginize that we are your new priesthood!

Religious dogma that's confused and shackled you.
Searching through the good book not knowing what's the truth.
You're only innocent, raised servile and unaware.
Unconversant to what is really out there.

Humanity must be erudite but not only from books should it gain insight.
Through practice of sound philosophy comes cognizance of Man's own plight.
This you won't find in your church or your faith,
Though science has always attempted to explicate.

Obviously you don't see that we've become your deities.
Can't you see that we are your new priesthood?
Blinded by your piety and impotent divinity,
Recoginize that we are your new priesthood!

Intelligence is lacking in your realm.
That is why we've come to take the helm.

As you have seen, you cannot turn to God for the solution.
Mankind has thrust himself into a sick position, lack of vision.
To those who blanket and surround themselves with gullibility,
There will be severity.
Yet again we will achieve the answers because we are more than God.

As you kneel and pray,
Genuflect our way.
Try and feel your way
Without our guidance someday.

History's shown you that answers can't be found above.
Life's great questions are tackled only by us.
Knowledge of mysteries that puzzle your learned men of the cloth.
We've explanations that men of God can't fathom.

Searching for your destiny
In a book that's not reality.
We have solved the the Earth's problems
Through our science and technology.
We see the things that you can't find in your faith.
We are in command with men like Hawking leading the way.

Obviously you don't see that we've become your deities.
Can't you see that we are your new priesthood?
Blinded by your piety and impotent divinity,
Recoginize that we are your new priesthood!
